Reverse Business Innovations - Evaluation of relevant new release functions for enterprise systems
(2014)
With each new release, enterprise software vendors deliver user organizations a myriad of new functions that can add
business value. Organizations are then faced with assessing which of the new functions drive value for them and which
do not and so, how much they will benefit from an upgrade.
The authors have developed a model for decision support. Various aspects of an upgrade can be assessed with the aid of
software tools, such as analyses and evaluations of new functionality with respect to relevance, benefits, profitability,
strategic goals and impact. In this article, we will present the portion of this model that can determine which functionality
is relevant for an organization and to what extent. Our decision support model applies “reverse” system usage to identify
which enterprise system functions are currently being used and which not. Based on usage data and pattern matching, we
can determine which new functions add value for organizations. This helps businesses more easily determine which new
functions are relevant to them and helps ensure that they continue to see a return on their often very expensive IT and IS
investments far into the future.
