While standards were of no particular importance in the early years of EV development, standards have increasingly become subject to policies and programs. For instance, the promotion of ‘indigenous' or ‘home-grown' innovation is perceived as means to develop domestic standards and contribute to international standards. Alongside this target, the Chinese government mandated the development of an EV standardization roadmap to serve as a guideline for optimizing standardization work, promoting technical innovation and large-scale industrialization. It was even considered that EV standardization was a novel standard field that has the potential to secure China a forerunner position in technological development as well as international standardization, regardless of standard-setting practices in the conventional automotive sector. Against this background, this paper examines the differences in system set-up and processes of standardization for the traditional automotive and the electric vehicles sector. While conventional automotive standardization is limited to a single sector with the Ministry of Industry of Information Technology and the China Automotive Technology and Research Centre in charge, electric vehicles require the participation of stakeholders from other sectors. Therefore, the negative influence from the conventional decentralized automotive sector on the development of common nationwide standards like the dynamics between national, regional and local actors cannot be deprived. Additionally, this paper also highlights learnings from EV standardization that might set positive impulses for conventional EV standardizations. For sufficient neuronal growth and adhesion on such MEAs, substrate preparation is required. Plating of dissociated neurons on a uniformly prepared MEA's surface results in the formation of spatially extended random networks with substantial inter-sample variability. Such cultures are not optimally suited to study the relationship between defined structure and dynamics in neuronal networks. To overcome these shortcomings, neurons can be cultured with pre-defined topology by spatially structured surface modification. Spatially structuring a MEA surface accurately and reproducibly with the equipment of a typical cell-culture laboratory is challenging. New method: In this paper, we present a novel approach utilizing micro-contact printing (μCP) combined with a custom-made device to accurately position patterns on MEAs with high precision. We call this technique AP-μCP (accurate positioning micro-contact printing). Comparison with existing methods: Other approaches presented in the literature using μCP for patterning either relied on facilities or techniques not readily available in a standard cell culture laboratory, or they did not specify means of precise pattern positioning. Conclusion: Here we present a relatively simple device for reproducible and precise patterning in a standard cell-culture laboratory setting. The patterned neuronal islands on MEAs provide a basis for high throughput electrophysiology to study the dynamics of single neurons and neuronal networks. A sub-group of these contaminants are neuro-active substances, the antiepileptic carbamazepine being one of the most relevant. For assessment of the neurotoxicity of this drug at a sub-therapeutic level, a cell-based sensor chip platform has been realized and characterized. For this purpose, a microelectrode array chip was designed and processed in a clean room and optimized in terms of low processing costs and good recording properties. For characterization of the system neuronal cells were plated on microelectrode array chips and electrical activity was measured as a function of applied carbamazepine concentration. We found that the relative spike rate decreased with increasing drug concentration resulted in IC50 values of around 36 μM. This value is five orders of magnitude higher than the maximal dose found in drinking water. IC50 values for burst rate, burst duration and synchrony were slightly higher, suggesting spike rate being a more sensitive parameter to carbamazepine. A few exposure studies revealed there is currently no evidence of any adverse health effects caused by weak electromagnetic fields. Nevertheless, some published results are inconsistent. Particularly, doubts have been raised regarding possible athermal biological effects in the young brain during neuronal development. Therefore, we developed and characterized a flexible experimental setup based on a transverse electromagnetic waveguide, allowing controlled, reproducible exposure of developing neuronal networks in vitro. Measurement of S‐parameters confirmed very good performance of the Stripline in the band of 800–1000 MHz. Simulations suggested a flexible positioning of cell culture dishes throughout a large exposure area, as specific absorption rate values were quite independent of their position (361.7 ± 11.4 mW/kg) at 1 W, 900 MHz. During exposure, thermal drift inside cellular medium did not exceed 0.1 K. Embryonic rat cortical neurons were cultivated on microelectrode array chips to non‐invasively assess electrophysiological properties of electrogenic networks. Measurements were taken for several weeks, which attest to the experimental setup being a reliable system for long‐term studies on developing neuronal tissue. These models contributed much to our knowledge about molecular and cellular mechanisms of neurotoxins affecting the central nervous system. Yet, animal models are not necessarily capable to forecasting the effectiveness of treatment in clinical trials. Therefore the development and characterization of suitable neuronal cell models derived from human cells is emerging in the field of toxicity testing. In this study, we present neurospheres (NS) as a new three dimensional (3D) neuronal cell model based on human embryonic stem cells (hESC), coupled onto microelectrode arrays (MEA). This cell-based assay serves as platform to investigate effects of neuroactive substances on network communication. In order to characterize the neurospheres’ reaction, the well-known GABA receptor antagonist bicuculline and the sodium channel blocker carbamazepine are applied. Preliminary results reveal anticipated and physiologically reasonable alterations in network activity. Thus, we have the first evidence that hESC derived NS are a promising 3D cell model for neurotoxicity testing. In further studies, this model will be used to investigate effects of ionizing radiation on network signaling. To be in a position to process methods and find solutions for highly complex, abstract, large, and multilayered problems, a Software Engineer has to have a lot of subject knowledge and technical competencies; but above all, he/she has to be able to work in – at least one – team. For the purpose of preparing the students with professional know-how and moreover with teamwork skills, the approach shown in this paper supplements an ex-cathedra teaching by a seminar and a project phase. This combination is dedicated to acquire theoretical knowledge in a collaborative and self-directed way. This is done in order to be able to deepen the learned matter, to share content through learning-by-teaching in groups and furthermore to apply the knowledge and skills in a simulated project, which constitutes a realistic situation and teamwork of an engineer as good as possible. The first method uses a physical model of cyclists to predict their future position. The second method is based on a polynomial least-squares approximation in combination with a multilayer perceptron artificial neural network and is able to predict the future position of cyclists independent of their motion type such as “Starting”, “Stopping”, “Waiting” or “Passing”. To evaluate the performance of the methods, 566 tracks (394 for training, 172 for testing) of uninstructed cyclists were recorded at a public intersection using a wide angle stereo camera system and laser scanners. Using the tracks as input data, the future trajectory was predicted for a time horizon of 2.5 s. For starting motions the prediction using the physical model leads to 27% more accurate positions than the KF approach for a forecast horizon of 2.5 s. The neural network shows a 34% more accurate result for starting and stopping motions and a similar result for waiting and passing motions. The plant is nonlinear and not identified. Three different kinds of controllers have been investigated in several variations, i.e. fuzzy control, PI(D) and model predictive control (MPC). 14 different criteria have been used for evaluation. In many respects a linear controller with fuzzy prediction proved best, in particular the prediction model can handle nonlinear properties of the plant. A problem of advanced control schemes with unidentified plants is the difficulty to prove stability. ED - Takahashi, Tadayuki ED - Bautz, Marshall T1 - Development of low-stress Iridium coatings for astronomical x-ray mirrors T2 - Proceedings of SPIE 9905, Space Telescopes and Instrumentation 2016: Ultraviolet to Gamma Ray N2 - Previously used mirror technologies are not suitable for the challenging needs of future X-ray telescopes. This is why the required high precision mirror manufacturing triggers new technical developments around the world. Some aspects of X-ray mirrors production are studied within the interdisciplinary project INTRAAST, a German acronym for "industry transfer of astronomical mirror technologies". The project is embedded in a cooperation of Aschaffenburg University of Applied Sciences and the Max-Planck-Institute for extraterrestrial Physics. One important task is the development of low-stress Iridium coatings for X-ray mirrors based on slumped thin glass substrates. The surface figure of the glass substrates is measured before and after the coating process by optical methods. Correlating the surface shape deformation to the parameters of coating deposition, here especially to the Argon sputtering pressure, allows for an optimization of the process. The sputtering parameters also have an influence on the coating layer density and on the micro-roughness of the coatings, influencing their X-ray reflection properties. Unfortunately the optimum coating process parameters seem to be contrarious: low Argon pressure resulted in better micro-roughness and higher density, whereas higher pressure leads to lower coating stress. Therefore additional measures like intermediate coating layers and temperature treatment will be considered for further optimization. The technical approach for the low-stress Iridium coating development, the experimental equipment, and the obtained first experimental results are presented within this paper. The training data are gathered from 1075 real urban traffic scenes with uninstructed pedestrians including starting, stopping, walking and bending in. The polynomial approximation provides an extraction of the principal information of the underlying time series in the form of the polynomial coefficients. It is independent of sensor parameters such as cycle time and robust regarding noise. Approximation and prediction can be performed very efficiently. It only takes 35 ms on an Intel Core i7 CPU. Test results show 28% lower prediction errors for starting scenes and 32% for stopping scenes in comparison to applying a constant velocity movement model. Approaches based on MLP without polynomial input or Support Vector Regression (SVR) models as motion predictor are outperformed as well.
