Data were collected using a modified version of the Learning Culture Inventory (LCI) questionnaire and analyzed both descriptively and inferentially. The descriptive statistics reveal differences in the mean values between the ideal and real states of educational conditions as perceived by students and professors. Inferential statistical analyses using t-tests identified significant differences between the perceptions of the two groups. The effect size Cohen’s d was also calculated to determine the strength of the existing difference. The analyses show that there are significant differences in many dimensions of the LCI between the perspectives of students and professors. These differences are often associated with high effect sizes. The results therefore indicate that the students' expectations and perceptions deviate (considerably) from the professors’ perspectives. We demonstrate the approach of a vision transformer, used for image classification, to detect cut interruption during laser fusion cutting in steel and aluminum. With events impending an incomplete cut in steel, we attempt to predict cut interruption before they even occur. To build a data set for training, cutting experiments are carried out with a 4 kW fiber laser, forcing incomplete cuts by varying the process parameters such as laser power and feed rate. The thermal radiation from the process zone during the cutting process is captured with a size of 256 × 256 px2 at sample rates of 20 × 103 fps. The kerf is recorded with a spectral sensitivity between 400 and 700 nm, without external illumination, which enables the melt to be observed in the range of the visual spectrum. The vision transformer model, which is used for image classification, splits the image into patches, linearly embedded with an added position embedding, and fed to a standard transformer encoder. For training the model, a set of images was labeled for the respective classes of a complete, incomplete, and impending incomplete cut. With the trained model, incomplete cuts in steel and aluminum can then be recognized and impending incomplete cuts in steel can be predicted in advance. However, their application in industry is limited because they are challenging to integrate into flexible beam shaping systems. This work is intended to overcome limitations in flexibility by presenting a new approach paving the way to high-aspect ratio freeform holes. Therefore, a spatial light modulator was integrated into an axicon-based setup to merge diffraction-free ablation with the flexibility of holographic spatial beam shaping. A dynamic change of the phase hologram displayed on the spatial light modulator during the process allows for the generation of arbitrary ablation geometries. In contrast to other holographic approaches, the diffraction-free nature of the Bessel beam allows ablation over an extended focal depth without any focus control needed. The applicability of the approach was demonstrated by processing arbitrary hole shapes, such as ellipses, squares, or star-shapes. The hole sizes of the freeform holes range from 4 μm to 80 μm. Using the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care (MIMIC)-III database and artificial intelligence (AI), we aimed to increase diagnostic precision, focusing on Bayesian network classifiers (BNCs) and comparing them with other AI methods. Data from 5970 adults, including 950 patients with cardiogenic shock, 1946 patients with septic shock, and 3074 patients with sepsis, were extracted for this study. Of the original 51 variables included in the data records, 12 were selected for constructing the predictive model. The data were divided into training and validation sets at an 80:20 ratio, and the performance of the BNCs was evaluated and compared with that of other AI models, such as the one rule classifier (OneR), classification and regression tree (CART), and an artificial neural network (ANN), in terms of accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, precision, and F1-score. The BNCs exhibited an accuracy of 87.6% to 91.5%. The CART model demonstrated a notable 91.6% accuracy when only three decision levels were used, whereas the intricate ANN model reached 90.5% accuracy. Both the BNCs and the CART model allowed clear interpretation of the predictions. BNCs have the potential to be valuable tools in diagnostic tasks, with an accuracy, sensitivity, and precision comparable, in some cases, to those of ANNs while demonstrating superior interpretability. This study presents a machine learning workflow to analyze drug-induced changes in neuronal biosensor data using complex network measures from graph theory. Microelectrode array recordings of neuronal networks exposed to bicuculline, a GABA $$_A$$ receptor antagonist known to induce hypersynchrony, demonstrated the workflow’s ability to detect and characterize pharmacological effects. The workflow integrates network-based features with synchrony, optimizing preprocessing parameters, including spike train bin sizes, segmentation window sizes, and correlation methods. It achieved high classification accuracy (AUC up to 90%) and used Shapley Additive Explanations to interpret feature importance rankings. Significant reductions in network complexity and segregation, hallmarks of epileptiform activity induced by bicuculline, were revealed. While bicuculline’s effects are well established, this framework is designed to be broadly applicable for detecting both strong and subtle network alterations induced by neuroactive compounds. The results demonstrate the potential of this methodology for advancing biosensor applications in neuropharmacology and drug discovery. One such application is in monopropellant thrusters for space propulsion systems, where hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is used as a liquid propellant. The decomposition of liquid hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen gas, which ultimately generates thrust, can be achieved using noble metal catalysts from the platinoid group, such as platinum and iridium. This promotes the use of more environmentally friendly and less toxic propellants, such as H2O2, instead of hydrazine and nitrogen tetroxide (NTO). The optimization of coating structures with these catalytic materials is essential for future space applications, as it aims to extend the lifespan of catalyst materials and results in a better utilization of H2O2 in satellite engines. Therefore, different layer structures were deposited onto Duranit D99 pellets using a controlled magnetron sputtering process. Previous studies have shown that the used sputtering pressure has a strong influence on the structure of the deposited coatings [2][3]. Certain parameter combinations produce catalytic layers with rough textures and a highly porous microstructure, see figure 1 [1]. To improve the thermal and mechanical stability of the sputtered layers, thin adhesive layers of Titanium and Zirconium were applied beneath the catalytic layer. The pellets were then heated in an oven at 640°C for one minute to simulate the thermal effects experienced in a satellite engine during ignition. Following this, the catalytic performance of the pellets was tested in laboratory experiments using 30% H2O2. Pellets with sputtered platinum as the catalytic coating delivered the best results. These coatings will be further evaluated in an engine test conducted at the German Aerospace Centre (DLR). Hydrogen peroxide is also expected to play a crucial role in future lunar and Martian colonization efforts. In this context, catalytic coatings would be used to decompose H2O2 to supply astronauts with water and oxygen, rather than to generate thrust in satellite engines. Die D-Mark gehörte international über 50 Jahre zu den zwei Währungen mit den niedrigsten Inflationsraten. In diesem Beitrag wird die Entwicklung der Preise und der Kaufkraft in Deutschland in zwei gleich langen Perioden vor und nach der Euro-Einführung verglichen. Der Euro weist dabei sogar geringere durchschnittliche Inflationsraten, gemessen an den Verbraucherpreisen in Deutschland, als die D-Mark auf. In den Jahren 1999 bis 2020 herrschte weltweit ein günstigeres Inflationsumfeld, was es auch der Europäischen Zentralbank (EZB) leichter machte, ihr Preisstabilitätsziel zu verfolgen. Die ersten schweren Herausforderungen ergaben sich für die EZB seit 2021, als die Inflationsrate aufgrund negativer Angebotsschocks und einer beispiellosen Fiskalexpansion auf über 10% anstieg. Die Deutsche Bundesbank konnte in ähnlichen Krisen in den 1970er Jahren mit einer konsequenten Stabilitätspolitik den Preisauftrieb deutlich stärker und nachhaltiger bekämpfen als die meisten anderen Länder. Ein Erfolg, zu dem auch ihr hoher Grad der Unabhängigkeit von der Politik beitrug. Ob dies der EZB gelingt, bleibt abzuwarten. Anfang 2025 liegt die Inflationsrate im Euroraum und in Deutschland trotz einer tiefgreifenden Konjunkturschwäche mit 2,5% noch immer über dem Inflationsziel von 2%. There is an urgent need for an automated and objective method to detect MDD due to the limitations of traditional diagnostic approaches. In this paper, we propose a methodology based on machine and deep learning to classify patients with MDD and identify altered functional connectivity patterns from EEG data. We compare several connectivity metrics and machine learning algorithms. Complex network measures are used to identify structural brain abnormalities in MDD. Using Spearman correlation for network construction and the SVM classifier, we verify that it is possible to identify MDD patients with high accuracy, exceeding literature results. The SHAP (SHAPley Additive Explanations) summary plot highlights the importance of C4-F8 connections and also reveals dysfunction in certain brain areas and hyperconnectivity in others. Despite the lower performance of the complex network measures for the classification problem, assortativity was found to be a promising biomarker. Our findings suggest that understanding and diagnosing MDD may be aided by the use of machine learning methods and complex networks. As we need new approaches for energy distribution and energy storage systems, hydrogen is often discussed as a promising energy carrier. PEM electrolysis can be used to transform electrical energy from renewable sources into hydrogen. One challenge in this context is the need for catalysts, as these contribute significantly to the performance of the electrolysis cell. The commonly used platinum group metal (PGM) catalysts like Iridium are quite scarce and therefore expensive. A possible approach to reduce the Ir content is the application of magnetron sputtering for catalyst generation. By selecting the right process parameters, the desired layer properties can be set very precisely during sputtering. This ensures a large surface area with reduced material usage. The introduction of carbon can increase the surface area of the catalyst further and enhance its effectiveness. First results of investigations on the catalytic effect of sputtered Ir catalyst layers will be presented. The target is to collect and analyze student data using xAPI statements, such as average working time and learning elements (LEs) interacted with, in order to gain insights into student behavior and learning processes. The aim of this study is to develop and provide a conceptual model using xAPI and LRS in an ALS setting, an architecture that improves the flexibility of developing adaptive learning systems, enabling the creation of personalized learning experiences for a wide range of users and use cases. The combination of xAPI and LRS allows the definition of a precise Domain Model and provides contextualized and structured data. Moreover, xAPI enables the transformation of the inherent complexity of the Domain Model into something understandable and actionable, facilitating deeper analysis of learning experiences. This paper demonstrates how the proposed Domain Model can effectively represent student activities, interactions, and learning outcomes within a defined framework. The expectation is that diverse types of learners, as well as developers and researchers in educational technologies, will benefit from the use of the Domain Model in a learning environment. Here the learner’s preferences are diagnosed, and then user interfaces are customized in an adaptive manner to accommodate the preferences. The Aschaffenburg Stratospheric Balloon Experiment (ASTRABAX) carries out experiments on material treatments and life sciences under the extreme radiation exposures at high altitude. The pioneer ASTRABAX flight took place mid of October 2024 in Germany. Measurements examined the UV spectral region by a miniature spectrometer and captured secondary cosmic rays employing a Geiger counter. Additional experiments assessed irradiation effects on polydopamine X-ray mirror coatings. The platform also carried samples of biological cells to evaluate effects of exposure to low-dose irradiation of high-energy particles, gamma rays and UV radiation simultaneously. Biological experiments under such realistic conditions are relevant for genetic research on Earth, for human space flights as well as for the understanding of astrobiological processes. As an integral part of the museum, the RöLab laboratory offers visitors the opportunity to gain practical experience in X-rays, optics and technology through own experiments. As part of a joint development project, students from Aschaffenburg University of Applied Sciences are currently designing a visitor experiment on astronomical X-ray optics for the museum´s Röntgen laboratory. An optical set-up with visible light illustrates the focusing principle of X-ray telescopes, e. g. for wide-angle optics based on the lobster-eye principle. Display boards explain the optics of various types of telescopes with accompanying text and corresponding illustrations. Modern X-ray observatories such as CHANDRA, XMM-Newton and eROSITA are presented clearly. Once implemented, the new visitor experiment inside the “Deutsches Röntgen-Museum” aims to inspire young researchers with enthusiasm for the fascinating world of X-ray optics and X-ray astronomy. The Czech Technical University – together with other collaborating institutes - studied innovative Lobster Eye (LE) and Kirkpatrick-Baez (KB) X-ray modules, based on the Multi Foil Optics technology (MFO). In addition, two major events were organized, namely a students workshop in December 2023 and a summer school in May 2024. The KB optics represents a promising and cost effective alternative to the currently used Wolter I telescopes. The LE X-ray optics, based on the Schmidt design, has a wide field of view (FOV) with a short focal length, making it suitable for CubeSat application. Thereby the 2D LE optics consist of two orthogonal sub-modules of flat smooth reflecting foils, each sub-modules focuses in one direction. The advantage of such optics is that it preserves the angular resolution throughout the FOV even for off-axis points, as demonstrated by simulations and measurements. There was a collaboration with Aschaffenburg University in design, development, and testing of the double LE module HORUS, comparing different reflecting coatings. Basic limitations need to be evaluated for this particular hybrid approach that combines laser powder bed fusion (PBF-LB/M) and in situ high-speed milling. Fundamental geometric limitations are examined with regard to the minimum feasible wall thickness, cylinders, overhanging structures, and chamfers. Furthermore, geometrical restrictions due to the integrated three-axis milling process with respect to inclinations, inner angles, notches, and boreholes are investigated. From these findings, we derive design guidelines for a reliable build process using this hybrid manufacturing. Additionally, a design guideline for the hybrid-additive manufacturing approach is presented, depicting a step-to-step guide for the adjustment of constructions. To demonstrate this, a powder nozzle for a direct energy deposition (DED-LB/M) process is redesigned following the previously defined guidelines. This redesign encompasses analysis of the existing component and identification of problematic areas such as flat angles, leading to a new construction that is suitable for a hybrid-additive manufacturing approach. For this, tensile components are heat‐treated by different processes, as namely stress relief (SR), SR and double aging (SR + DA), and hot‐isostatic pressing are conducted. For the mechanical testing, the ultimate tensile strength (UTS) as well as the fatigue behavior are evaluated, examining differences in maximum load behavior, elongation, and the different regimes of fatigue. As changes in material structure can be observed, the sole SR leads to a diminished UTS, while the combination of SR + DA develops an UTS of Rm = 1277 MPa. Within the fatigue behavior, the HIP shows a very balanced material structure with an increased high cycle and very high cycle regime, as the texture gets homogenized during the heat treatment. The metallographic analysis can quantify the material changes, as the density and the hardness are improved by virtue of the heat treatments. Furthermore, the fractographic analysis shows the differences in fracture behavior, arising due to the microstructural changes, as crack initiation points, crack propagation, and forced fractures can be categorized by scanning electron microscopy.
