Based on research results pertaining to imminent crash warnings, it was expected that the effectiveness of such advisory warnings depends on situation-specific anticipations by the driver. During a simulator study, N = 20 drivers went through a wide range of longitudinal traffic and intersection scenarios. The scenarios varied in the possibility to anticipate traffic conflicts (Anticipation: high vs. low) and were completed under different visibility conditions (Visibility: obstructed vs. visible), with and without driver assistance based on cooperative perception (i.e., visual-auditory advisory warnings two seconds prior to the last-possible warning moment; assistance: no assistance vs. with assistance). The warning concept was based on empirical pre-studies and previously validated on a public test intersection. During non-assisted driving, critical situations were mainly experienced when the possibility to anticipate traffic conflicts was low. Visual obstructions lead to a further increase in the frequency of critical situations. Furthermore, the results indicate a clear mitigation of critical encounters when providing early advisory warnings which is independent from sight obstructions. Neuroelectrodes should show small geometrical surface area and low impedance for measuring and high charge injection capacities for stimulation. Increasing the electrochemically active surface area by using nanoporous electrode material or by integrating nanostructures onto planar electrodes is a common approach to improve this interface. In this paper a simulation approach for neuro electrodes' characteristics with integrated high aspect ratio nano structures based on a point-contact-model is presented. The results are compared with experimental findings conducted with real nanostructured microelectrodes. In particular, effects of carbon nanotubes and gold nanowires integrated onto microelectrodes are described. Simulated and measured impedance properties are presented and its effects onto the transfer function between the neural membrane potential and the amplifier output signal are studied based on the point-contact-model. Simulations show, in good agreement with experimental results, that electrode impedances can be dramatically reduced by the integration of high aspect ratio nanostructures such as gold nanowires and carbon nanotubes. This lowers thermal noise and improves the signal-to-noise ratio for measuring electrodes. This is achieved by dramatically increasing the electrochemical active surface area without increasing the overall geometrical dimensions. Typically, carbon nanotube electrodes are nearly planar and composed of randomly distributed carbon nanotube networks having a limited surface gain for a specific geometrical surface area. To overcome this limitation, we have introduced vertically aligned carbon nanotube (VACNT) networks as electrodes, which are arranged in a microelectrode pattern of 60 single electrodes. Each microelectrode features a very high aspect ratio of more than 300 and thus a dramatically increased surface area. These microelectrodes composed of VACNT networks display dramatically decreased impedance over the entire frequency range compared to planar microelectrodes caused by the enormous capacity increase. More than 50 years after Clark and Lyons proposed the first glucose enzyme electrodes this concept is still widely in use today. Most concepts use the enzyme glucose oxidase (GOx) that reacts with glucose. These reactions cause a current that is proportional to the amount of glucose present at the sensor. Thus, if the sample volume is known, the blood sugar level can be measured. Although these electrodes have been in use for so long they have the disadvantage of a limited shelf time. In this work we present an enzyme free approach for glucose detection applying ultrathin gold films. According to the basic Fuchs-Sondheimer-theory and other more sophisticated models the resistivity of ultrathin metal films is dominated by scattering effects at their surface. Chemical reactions at the metallic surface are expected to change the conductivity properties and thus these changes can be used to detect molecules. This can be done by creating a self-assembled monolayer at the gold surface. When molecules such as glucose bind to the end groups of this layer the electron scattering and thus the conductivity of the film is expected to change. Ultrathin gold films with a thickness of 6 nm show the largest relative change in resistivity and are thus the preferred film thickness for this application. As the final goal of arranging single atoms has been achieved, research focuses on two targets: firstly, improving the capabilities of existing technologies towards nanometer resolution and secondly, finding new methods for producing nanostructures in a fast and easy way. Here, we present a new maskless method for sub-micro-patterning of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) thin films. By applying atomic-force-microscope (AFM) assisted nano-xerography, electric charges were locally injected with an AFM-tip into PMMA. The resulting electrostatic patterns attracted charged gold-nanoparticles, which were selectively deposited onto the PMMA layers with lateral dimensions below 200 nm. In a second step, heat treatment at 275 °C initiated a selective decomposition of the PMMA layer, only observed in PMMA-areas covered with nanoparticles, whereas uncovered areas were not modified by the heat treatment. Analyzing the grooves with the AFM, we found that lines with a width in the sub-micrometer range to several micrometers have successfully been realized. In situations in which escalation of commitment can occur, infor-mation load is relevant for decision making for two reasons. First, in escalation situations in which decision makers face negative feedback, information load exacerbates the tendency to escalate commitment. Second, when an escalation tendency is absent, information load can lead to a decision to continue a losing course of action, which can be mistaken for escalation of commitment. The data was gathered from usage analyses of SAP systems via RBE Plus, a reverse business engineering tool. The method focuses on urban scenarios where these pedestrian movements are common and may result in critical situations. Pedestrian intentions are determined by means of an image-based motion contour histogram of oriented gradient descriptor. It is based on silhouettes gathered from stereo data and does not require any compensation of appearance changes resulting from the ego-motion of a vehicle. Nevertheless, it covers small movements indicating a pedestrian's intention. A linear support vector machine with probabilistic estimates is used for classification. We evaluated our method on the publicly available Daimler Pedestrian Path Prediction Benchmark Dataset containing detections of a stateof-the-art pedestrian detector. We detect a pedestrian's stopping intention from 125 ms to 500 ms before standing still within an accuracy range of 80\% to 100\%. Bending in is detected from 320 ms to 570 ms after a first visible lateral body movement in the same accuracy range. The intention to cross the road from standing still (starting) is detected 250 ms after the first visible motion and, therefore, within the first step with an accuracy of 100\%.}, subject = {Bildfolgenanalyse}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{GoldhammerKoehlerDolletal.2015, author = {Goldhammer, Michael and K{\"o}hler, Sebastian and Doll, Konrad and Sick, Bernhard}, title = {Camera Based Pedestrian Path Prediction by Means of Polynomial Least-squares Approximation and Multilayer Perceptron Neural Networks}, series = {SAI Intelligent Systems Conference (IntelliSys), 2015}, booktitle = {SAI Intelligent Systems Conference (IntelliSys), 2015}, publisher = {IEEE}, doi = {10.1109/IntelliSys.2015.7361171}, pages = {390 -- 399}, year = {2015}, abstract = {This paper provides a method to forecast pedestrian trajectories by means of polynomial least-squares approximation and multilayer perceptron artificial neural networks for traffic safety applications. The approach uses camera based head tracking as input data to predict a continuous trajectory for a 2.5 s future time horizon. Training and test is performed using 1075 recorded tracks of uninstructed pedestrians in common public traffic situations, including many challenging scenarios like starting, stopping and bending in. The neural network approach has the ability to handle these scenes by learning a single implicit movement model independent of a specific motion type. The polynomial approximation provides an extraction of the principal information of the underlying time series in the form of the polynomial coefficients, high independence of input data, e.g., sample rate, and additional noise resistance. Our test results show 24\% lower prediction errors for starting scenes and 29\% for stopping scenes in comparison to a constant velocity Kalman filter.
