Forest classification is needed to solve a wide range of environmental issues related to of forest classes and succession processes, the extent of afforestation and deforestation and global environmental change. These applications require a very accurate mapping and monitoring of forest types. This article investigates the combination of modern open geographic information systems and remote sensing data in forest management tasks for a specific part of the Ukrainian state area. Based on the existing afforestation plans, the results of the unsupervised classification of Sentinel-2 images and the selection of forest species fragments with closed crowns as training data for supervised classification, classifiers of forest species of the study object were developed with and without taking into account age groups. A supervised classification of research objects is realized and the accuracy of the obtained results is evaluated. It is established that the accuracy of determining forest species on the basis of the proposed method is 90.3 and 91.4%, taking into account age groups and without taking them into account, respectively. Thus, it is found that the modeling of the age groups does not improve the classification result for the test area.

The cultural human heritage is important for the identity of following generations and has to be preserved in a suitable manner. In the course of time a lot of information about former cultural constructions has been lost because some objects were strongly damaged by natural erosion or on account of human work or were even destroyed. It is important to capture still available building parts of former buildings, mostly ruins. This data could be the basis for a virtual reconstruction. Laserscanning offers in principle the possibility to take up extensively surfaces of buildings in its actual status.
In this paper we assume a priori given 3d-laserscanner data, 3d point cloud for the partly destroyed church. There are many well known algorithms, that describe different methods of extraction and detection of geometric primitives, which are recognized separately in 3d points clouds. In our work we put them in a common probabilistic framework, which guides the complete reconstruction process of complex buildings, in our case russian-orthodox churches.
Churches are modeled with their functional volumetric components, enriched with a priori known probabilities, which are deduced from a database of russian-orthodox churches. Each set of components represents a complete church. The power of the new method is shown for a simulated dataset of 100 russian-orthodox churches.
Besides the common approach of an exclusively file based management of 3D point clouds, meanwhile it is possible to store and process this special type of massive geodata within spatial database systems. Users benefit from the general advantages of database solutions and especially from the potentials of a combined analysis of original 3D point clouds, 2D rasters, 3D voxel stacks and 2D and 3D vector data in order to gain valuable geo- information. This paper describes the integration of 3D point clouds into an open source PostgreSQL/PostGIS database using the Pointcloud extension and functions of the Point Data Abstraction Library (PDAL). The
focus is on performing three-dimensional spatial queries and the evaluation of different tiling methods for the organization of 3D point clouds into table rows, regarding memory space, performance of spatial queries and effects on interactions between point clouds and other GIS features within the database. A new approach for an optimized point cloud tiling, considering the individual geometric characteristic of a 3D point cloud, is presented. The results show that an individually selected storage structure for a point cloud is crucial for low memory consumption and high-performance 3D queries in PostGIS applications, taking account of its three-dimensional spatial extent and point density.
Land use in the Volyn region (Ukraine) has changed a lot in the last decade. Change detection basing on satellite images is an appropriate method to show the migration of land use. In this article, a classification of the land use on free satellite is implemented. The procedure should be as automatic as possible. For the optimum accuracy different band combinations and the NDVI are tested. Different methods were compared due to the achieved accuracy and the status of automation.
Rapid and uncontrolled expansion of cities has led to unplanned aerial development. In this way, modeling and predicting the urban growth of a city helps decision-makers. In this study, the aspect of sustainable urban development has been studied for the city of Mashhad. In general, the prediction of urban aerial
development is one of the most important topics of modern town management. In this research, using the Cellular Automaton (CA) model and perceptron neural network method with satellite data developed for geo data of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and presenting a simple and powerful model, a simulation of complex urban processes has been done. In finally our accuracy has been better compared to other researches that have been done in this field and we have slightly improved and optimize the final results approximately %92.1.
Mapping of parking spaces in cities is a prerequisite for future applications in parking space management like community-based parking. Although terrestrial or vehicle based sensors will be the favorite data source for parking space mapping, airborne monitoring can play a role in building up city wide basis maps which include also parking spaces on ancillary and suburban roads. We present a novel framework for automatic city wide classification of vehicles in moving, stopped and parked using aerial image sequences and information from a road database. The time span of observation of a specific vehicle during an image sequence is usually not long enough to decide unambiguously, whether a vehicle stopped e.g. before a traffic light or is parking along the road. Thus, the workflow includes a vehicle detection and tracking method as well as a rule-based fuzzy-logic workflow for the classification of vehicles. The workflow classifies stopped and parked vehicles by including the neighbourhood of each vehicle via a Delaunay-Graph. The presented method reaches correctness values of around 86.3%, which is demonstrated using three different aerial image sequences. The results depend on several factors like detection quality and road database accuracy.
In this article, a novel, media undisruptive method for the measurement of photogrammetric test fields using a laser tracker is presented. The new approach is precise and versatile in its application. It relies on image processing on the quasi continuous measurements of a hand-held laser scanner and laser tracker combination. The field of useful applications is large. In this article, we show the benefit in the field of camera calibration. Essential for highly accurate photogrammetric measurements is a careful calibration, since all cameras have optical distortions due to manufacturing processes of the lens. The calibration can be done by e.g. using a test field. In some cases, 3D coordinates of the control points are necessary. These coordinates are often determined by photogrammetry itself and tacheometric angle measurements in advance. A scale, e.g. a subtense bar, usually needs to be included which increases the measuring efforts. The method bases on the measured 3D point cloud of a test field. With this technique, not only the centers of all control points are accessible. Other geometric features can be chosen too. Since the point cloud consist of many single point measurements, every control point determination has already a high statistical redundancy. The 3D coordinates of every single control point are extracted from the point cloud, making an additional scale obsolete. Presently, the position accuracy is ≤50μm (MPE), which is mainly limited by the laser scanner used in this article. The here-presented technique can be applied to all kinds of shapes, dimensions, materials, numbers and arrangements of control points. Furthermore, it is a lot faster and easier to handle than the angle measurements of the tacheometer.
Smart farming takes place by using recent UAV-technology for agricultural profitability. Multiple companies and research centers are working on realizing real scenarious. But there are only restricted experiences about how to process the data faster and better in real-time. Autonomous systems that can decide instanteously after receiving sensor information could increase the farming efficiency. The agroindustry research group from the Escuela Colombiana de Ingeniería and Universidad de Ciencias Aplicadas y Ambientales en Bogota-Colombia in alliance with the University of Applied Sciences Wuerzburg-Schweinfurt are committed to that idea.
This project uses an NVIDIA Jetson embedded board to process agricultural information in order to find abnormalities. In this article we prove that this board is able to make the calculations for a vegetation index in real-time from multi-spectral images.
A detailed inspection of roads requires highly detailed spatial data with sufficient precision to deliver an accurate geometry and to describe road defects visually. This paper presents a novel method for the detection of road defects. The input data for road defect detection included point clouds and orthomosaics gathered by mobile mapping technology. The defects were categorized in three major groups with the following geometric primitives: points, lines and polygons. The method suggests the detection of point objects from matched point clouds, panoramic images and ortho photos. Defects were mapped as point, line or polygon geometries, directly derived from orthomosaics and panoramic images. Besides the geometric position of road defects, all objects were assigned to a variety of attributes: defect type, surface material, center-of-gravity, area, length, corresponding image of the defect and degree of damage. A spatial dataset comprising defect values with a matching data type was created to perform the attribute analysis quickly and correctly. The final product is a spatial vector data set, consisting of points, lines and polygons, which contains attributes with further information and geometry. This paper demonstrates that mobile mapping suits a large-scale feature extraction of road infrastructure defects. By its simplicity and flexibility, the presented methodology allows it to be easily adapted to extract further feature types with their attributes. This makes the proposed approach a vital tool for data extraction settings with multiple mobile mapping data analysts, e.g., offline crowdsourcing.
Photogrammetric point clouds offer immense potential for various applications, especially for the AEC industry and ”as-built” BIM. However, despite many advantages such as time and cost efficiency, image based point clouds of indoor environments mostly suffer from inhomogeneous and strongly fluctuating point-wise uncertainties. This lack of area-filling geometric reliability represents a strong barrier for innovations and further development of image based applications for as-built BIM, regarding both software and hardware. Therefore, this paper presents a method for the geometric verification of indoor BIMs by images and uncertainty management in order to unleash the potential of photogrammetry in context of professional building documentation heading towards ”digital twinning”. Individual 3D point accuracies, object’s surface characteristics and BIM related uncertainties according to the Level of Accuracy (LOA) specification are assessed and taken into account. The final decision of whether or not a photogrammetric point cloud confirms a given model within its associated level of accuracy results from a combined reasoning pipeline based on Dempster–Shafer evidence theory. The novel Pho-to-BIM verification method is demonstrated on three real indoor construction sites, each 3D mapped with different image sensors. Based on the experiments it is shown how to set up belief functions for evidence based reasoning individually, depending on the measurement and site characteristics.
In this paper we describe a new concept for the reconstruction of buildings. In contrast to most of the published approaches, we link the reconstruction process with the building interpretation. With this linkage we want to enhance the reconstruction result and to yield semantic information about the buildings. We introduce building models based on their topology. We also may use data from different sensor types. The analysis is done locally using statistical building information for the interpretation in a Markov-Random-Field and using e. g. geometric or radiometric “appearance” models for the reconstruction. A real data example from laserscanner observations demonstrates the approach.
Automatic construction progress documentation and metric evaluation of execution work in confined building interiors requires particularly reliable geometric evaluation and interpretation of statistically uncertain as-built point clouds. This paper presents a method for high-resolution change detection based on dense 3D point clouds from terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) and the discretization of space by voxels. In order to evaluate the metric accuracy of a BIM according to the Level of Accuracy (LOA) specification, the effects of laser range measurements on the occupancy of space are modeled with belief functions and evaluated using Dempster and Shafer's theory of evidence. The application is demonstrated on the point cloud data of multi temporal scanning campaigns of real indoor reconstructions. The results show that TLS point clouds are suitable to verify a given BIM up to LOA 40 if special attention is paid to the scanning geometry during the acquisition. The proposed method can be used to document construction progress, verify and even update the LOA status of a given BIM, confirming valid and BIM-compliant as-built models for further planning.
For the interpretation of point clouds, the semantic definition of extracted segments from point clouds or images is a common problem. Usually, the semantic of geometrical pre-segmented point cloud elements are determined using probabilistic networks and scene databases. The proposed semantic segmentation method is based on the psychological human interpretation of geometric objects, especially on fundamental rules of primary comprehension. Starting from these rules the buildings could be quite well and simply classified by a human operator (e.g. architect) into different building types and structural elements (dome, nave, transept etc.), including particular building parts which are visually detected. The key part of the procedure is a novel method based on hashing where point cloud projections are transformed into binary pixel representations. A segmentation approach released on the example of classical Orthodox churches is suitable for other buildings and objects characterized through a particular typology in its construction (e.g. industrial objects in standardized enviroments with strict component design allowing clear semantic modelling).
The point cloud interpretation and reconstruction of 3d-buildings from point clouds has already been treated for a few decades. There are many articles which consider the different methods and workows of the automatic detection and reconstruction of geometrical objects from point clouds. Each method is suitable for the special geometry type of object or sensor. General approaches are rare. In our work we present an algorithm which develops the optimal process sequence of the automatic search, detection and reconstruction of buildings and building components from a point cloud. It can be used for the detection of the set of geometric objects to be reconstructed, independent of its destruction. In a simulated example we reconstruct a complete Russian-orthodox church starting from the set of detected structural components and reconstruct missing components with high probability.

We present an automated approach for the dodging of images, with which we edit digital images as it is usually done with analogue images in dark-rooms. Millions of aerial images of all battle fields were taken during the Second World War. They were intensively used, e.g. for the observation of military movements, the documentation of success and failure of military operations and further planning. Today, the information of these images supports the removal of explosives of the Second World War and the identi- fication of dangerous waste in the soil. In North Rhine-Westphalia, approximately 300.000 aerial images are scanned to handle the huge amount of available data efficiently. The scanning is done with a gray value depth of 12 bits and a pixel size of 21 μm to gain both, a high radiometric and a high geometric resolution of the images. Due to the photographic process used in the 1930s and 1940s and several reproductions, the digitized images are exposed locally very differently. Therefore, the images shall be improved by automated dodging. Global approaches mostly returned unsatisfying results. Therefore, we present a new approach, which is based on local histogram equalization. Other methods as spreading the histogram or linear transformations of the histogram manipulate the images either too much or not enough. For the implementation of our approach, we focus not only on the quality of the resulting images, but also on robustness and performance of the algorithm. Thus, the technique can also be used for other applications concerning image improvements.
State of the art adult education combines both online and offline lectures. There is a variety of terms that describe combinations of online and offline learning settings.
We apply Blended Learning in the project SMART vhb to teach students photogrammetry, laser scanning and image analysis. We extend Blended Learning by face-to-face meetings with networking aspects and call this approach Blended Networking. We apply Blended Networking in the project MV-3D4KMU to teach mobile mapping and collaborate with experienced professionals.
We share our experience with Blended Learning and Blended Networking. Both approaches proved to be efficient when applied in a well-structured framework. In this paper, we explain how to structure the development process of these lectures and settings, how to successfully conduct such lectures. We give recommendations based on our experience for both methods. We encourage to use and assess these novel approaches to sustainably implement lectures in adult education and educational networking
Blended Learning in Photogrammetrie und Bildverarbeitung für regionale KMUs - Ein Erfahrungsbericht
(2018)
In various projects we investigate on the extraction of buildings on di erent type and representation of data. This paper presents a strategy for 3D building acquisition which combines different approaches based on di erent levels of description. The approach consists of detectionofregions of interest and automatic and semiautomatic reconstruction of object parts and complete buildings. We incorporate the approach in a global concept of interaction between scene and sensors for image interpretation.
This paper deals with the derivation of a symbolic surface description exploiting the information of multiple images while using a minimum of domain knowledge. We present a new concept for segmenting surfaces by fusing multiple images both on the iconic and on the symbolic description level. In a first step a local 3D-reconstruction and interpretation is derived based on the result of a polymorphic feature ex-traction. It serves as prior information for a second step which refines the initial segmentation using the radiometric image content. Examples of the proposed procedure are presented for the application of 3D-building reconstruction from aerial images.
This paper integrates statistical reasoning and Grassmann-Cayly algebra for making 2D and 3D geometric reasoning practical. The multi-linearity of the forms allows rigorous error propagation and statistical testing of geometric relations. This is archieved by representing all objects in homogeneous coordinates and expressing all relations using standard matrix calculus.
This paper presents a hybrid concept of interaction between scene and sensors for image interpretation. We present a strategy for 3D building acquisition which combines different approaches based on different levels of description and different sensors: the detection of regions of interest, and the automatic and semi-automatic reconstruction of object parts and complete buildings.
Überführung von 2D-Passmarken in hoch aufgelöste 3D-Punktwolken mittels Präzisions-Lasercsanning
(2019)
Complex geometry extraction from point clouds is an actual problem in reverse engineering. Simple geometrical models (like parallelepipeds, prisms, pyramids, cones, spheres) were already applied in construction and machine-building modeling, but are not sufficient for high quality BIM now. This work, which is carried out in the context of virtual reconstruction of destroyed orthodox churches, presents a robust and efficient method of cupola (domes) and tambour geometry extraction from precise point clouds. The rich diversity of architectural forms, which are defined by many parameters, does not allow to consider this problem as a trivial duty, because usual geometry extraction methods fail for these object types. The new developed algorithm is presented and realized
In this paper we develop a new approach to recognize structural elements of orthodox churches. We will work with 3D point clouds, received as a result of 3D point cloud acquisitions of churches, e.g. from laser scanning. Because of the large amount of points in such clouds, we have to use a projection (elevation) to decrease the calculation effort. To get meaningful images from the projection of the point cloud we do some prior segmentation of the 3D cloud. Images binary, with a predefined resolution that depends on the resolution of the 3D point cloud. To recognize elements we decide to use neural networks (Perceptron and Counter propagation neural networks) as they allow the automation of the process and have a broad range of methods to recognize images. For the subsequent 3D modeling we use analytic expressions, that describe each of the structural church elements. A further step is the deduction of those expressions that describe each of the recognized sectional views
Multi-Camera-Rover are recently coming up for usual terrestrical surveying tasks. This technique is new for the surveyors. Although photogrammetric specialists realize the benefits of such systems immediately, surveyors have difficulties to find efficient usages. To approach this new measurement systems the technique has to be understood and the confidence on the accuray has to grow. In this paper we analyze the accuracy of a Multi-Camera-Rover using an indoor testfield by photogrammetric algorithms. The results show that the knowledge of the interior orientation parameter of the cameras and the relative orientation of the cameras is essential for precise geometric reconstructions. Knowing these additional data, high accurate results become possible.
During the last years an increasing demand for 3D data of urban scenes can be recognized. Techniques for automatic acquisition of buildings are needed to satisfy this demand in an economic way. This paper describes an approach for building extraction using digital surface models (DSM) as input data. The first task is the detection of areas within the DSM which describe buildings. The second task is the reconstruction of geometric building descriptions. In this paper we focus on new extensions of our approach. The first extension is the detection of buildings using two alternative classification schemes: a binary or a statistical classification based on Bayesian nets, both using local geometric properties. The second extension is the extraction of roof structures as a first step towards the reconstruction of polyhedral building descriptions.
The use of coastal lands is constantly changing due to the regression and progress of water 10 areas. This coastal Land use changes the need for continuous monitoring at regular intervals to 11 efficiently manage coastal resources. In this study, the effect of Gorgan gulf ( is location in the 12 southeastern part of the Caspian Sea in Golestan province of IRAN country ) progress and re-13 gression on land-use change in the surrounding lands has been modeled and estimated using 14 remote sensing images. For this purpose, two satellite images of Landsat 5 and Sentinel 2 were 15 taken in 1992 and 2017, respectively, and after preparing and applying the necessary prepro-16 cessing, the most similar classification and land uses of the study area were extracted. Overall 17 accuracy values of 0.94 and kappa coefficient of 0.92 indicated the appropriate accuracy of land 18 use maps. The classified images and the topographic maps, and the network of passages of the 19 study area were designated as land modeling inputs to detect land-use changes over 25 years. The 20 study results showed that the water area of the Gorgan gulf had faced a water level decline of 21 150 square kilometers, which has led to an increase in the area of wastelands. Also, agriculture 22 and garden, and rangelands have been significantly reduced during the study period 23
