A1 - Paaßen, Benjamin A1 - Gregorová, Magda T1 - Diffusion-based Visual Counterfactual Explanations - Towards Systematic Quantitative Evaluation JF - CoRR N2 - Latest methods for visual counterfactual explanations (VCE) harness the power of deep generative models to synthesize new examples of high-dimensional images of impressive quality. However, it is currently difficult to compare the performance of these VCE methods as the evaluation procedures largely vary and often boil down to visual inspection of individual examples and small scale user studies. In this work, we propose a framework for systematic, quantitative evaluation of the VCE methods and a minimal set of metrics to be used. We use this framework to explore the effects of certain crucial design choices in the latest diffusion-based generative models for VCEs of natural image classification (ImageNet). We conduct a battery of ablation-like experiments, generating thousands of VCEs for a suite of classifiers of various complexity, accuracy and robustness. Our findings suggest multiple directions for future advancements and improvements of VCE methods. By sharing our methodology and our approach to tackle the computational challenges of such a study on a limited hardware setup (including the complete code base), we offer a valuable guidance for researchers in the field fostering consistency and transparency in the assessment of counterfactual explanations. We follow the strategy of implicit distribution modelling via generative adversarial network (GAN) combined with permutation equivariant message passing architecture operating over the sets of nodes and edges. This enables generating the feature vectors of all the graph objects in one go (in 2 phases) as opposed to a much slower one-by-one generations of sequential models, prevents the need for expensive graph matching procedures usually needed for likelihood-based generative models, and uses efficiently the network capacity by being insensitive to the particular node ordering in the graph representation. We introduce the Vector-Quantized Graph Auto-Encoder (VQ-GAE), a permutation-equivariant discrete auto-encoder and designed to model the distribution of graphs. By exploiting the permutation-equivariance of graph neural networks (GNNs), our autoencoder circumvents the problem of the ordering of the graph representation. We leverage the capability of GNNs to capture local structures of graphs while employing vector-quantization to prevent the mapping of discrete objects to a continuous latent space. Furthermore, the use of autoregressive models enables us to capture the global structure of graphs via the latent representation. We evaluate our model on standard datasets used for graph generation and observe that it achieves excellent performance on some of the most salient evaluation metrics compared to the state-of-the-art. In addition, Green IT became more important especially over the last few years. Besides on-demand content like video live streams, HTTP traffic plays an important role. Thinking of textual web content, compression quickly comes to mind as a possibility to reduce traffic. The current HTTP/1.1 standard only provides gzip as an option for content encoding. HTTP/2.0 is under heavy development and numerous new algorithms have been established over the last few years. This paper analyzes HTTP traffic composition on a production server and concludes that about 50% is compressible. It further examines the effectiveness of custom and existing algorithms with regards to compression ratio, speed, and energy consumption. Our results show that gzip is a sound choice for web traffic but alternatives like LZ4 are faster and provide competitive compression ratios. After all, refocusing an image after it was taken is one of the features most wished for in photography. The possibility of refocusing a video after being taken extends this feature to an additional dimension, enabling direct user interaction in videos, which could result in a new form of entertainment and user experience. This work presents different approaches of preprocessing and rendering light field videos made with a Lytro Illum, a plenoptic camera using microlenses. We compare three differently preprocessed light field videos and reveal the main issues for rendering on consumer hardware. Our results show, that one of the biggest obstacles lies in the transfer of data from light field video files to the main memory of the system. Therefore, the demosaiced and color corrected representation that balances preprocessing and resulting video file size is fastest in rendering light field video files. Our system uses particle filtering to solve the recursive state estimation problem of finding the position of a pedestrian. We show how to integrate the information of the previous state into the weight update step and how the observation data can help within the state transition model. High positional accuracy can be achieved by only knowing that the pedestrian makes a foot step or changes her direction together with floor map information. JF - FHWS Science Journal N2 - Autistic children are often motivated in their communication behavior by pets or toys. Our aim is to investigate, how communication with “intelligent“ systems affects the interaction of children with untypical development. Natural language processing is intended to be used in toys to talk to children. This challenging Háblame-project (as part of the EU-funded Gaviota project) is just starting. We will discuss verification of its premises and its potentials, and outline the technical solution. Almost no company can get by these days without mobile software solutions. At the same time we are going through a convergence of desktop and mobile, web and native application development. Because of this clear necessarity of mobility and mobile development it is not surprising that there is a large number of different recommendations for software developer using different technologies. This paper is going to point out the basic approach of a cross-platform application framework using the example of PhoneGap and - more importantly - highlights and answers the question if the often promised universal applicability of these frameworks really apply and a one-off source code is enough to deploy an enterprise application. The latter feature additional complexity due to their often highly distributed and interlaced nature. Herzig et. al. addressed this problem and proposed a generic platform for enterprise gamification. Based on their work, the problem of formulating gamification rules is taken up in this paper. Ontologies and semantic technologies are proposed as a possible solution. An ontology for gamification rules is created. Its applicability to solve the problem is validated with a thought experiment.
