Unfolding Spaces
(2022)
What is inspiration? Can there be a method for finding inspiration? “Inspired by Method: Creative Tools for the Design Process” is both a guide to and a source of inspiration. Designing involves individuality and a systematic approach, which we may apply consciously or subconsciously, depending on the project. The 5D-method for inspiration, created by Alexandra Martini, is an incisive little tool that you can use in any design process. It takes away the fear of starting a new project. This method uses the following five dimensions: Formal-Aesthetic Dimension, Haptic Dimension, Production Dimension, Cultural Dimension and Interactive Dimension. It will help you analyse, experiment with and realise your ideas. The first phase of the book will get you started.
The second phase encourages you to experiment and explore some unusual paths. Classical principles, such as composition and proportion, are interwoven with contemporary manufacturing processes such as 3D printing and aspects of human-machine interaction.
For all budding creatives who are involved with design, in any way, that want to deepen their knowledge and intellectual portfolio professionally and develop their design skills further. “Inspired by Method: Creative Tools for the Design Process” provides orientation, guidance, methodology and a soft process algorithm.
Prototyping inconvenience : a pedagogical experiment on designing for debate in design education
(2022)
With design having more impact than ever, there is an increased need for critical inquiries into design research and education that engage designers to question established disciplinary assumptions. One prevailing myth is the convenience ideal: the obsession with comfort, efficiency, smoothness, and smartness that relates to a trend of envisioning super-convenient futures. By combining iterative prototyping, anti-solutionist strategies, and tactics of critical and speculative design, we built a counter-approach to conventional design processes: Inconvenient Design. With convenience as the topic for debate, we explored its potential in the course Stranger Things–Prototyping Inconvenience. This paper provides an overview of the approach and course format, using examples of student projects to illustrate how it encouraged them to reflect and debate directly in the design process in a tangible way, enabling them to craft alternatives. Lastly, we discuss the opportunities our methodological approach can bring to design research and education.

Dynamic knobs
(2008)
In this paper, we introduce the change of a mobile phone's hardware shape as a means of tactile interaction.
The alteration of shape is implemented in a hardware prototype using a dynamic knob as an interaction device for the user. The knob alters the phone's shape according to different events and states, like incoming calls, new voice mail, or missed calls. Therefore, the user can explore the phone's status by touching it - ambiently, even through the pocket. Initial user testing showed that this form of tactile interaction was easy to understand and handy to interact with, also for unexperienced users.
Design for intuitive use
(2008)
After a short introduction to our concept of intuitive use of user interfaces we would like to invite the interdisciplinary CHI community to discuss at least two important issues, namely: How does intuitive use and aesthetics relate? And, does physicality enable intuitive use? In the following, we present some provoking theses to trigger the discussion of these questions.
