Following the reunification, City West stands in opposition to the regained historic town centre, which is being upgraded in its role as centre to the united city. With the return to ‘normality’, City West has lost its unique position which had developed after 1945. The associated process of establishing relative ranking orders within the infrastructure of the town has led to a questioning of accepted standards in the western districts – a new reassurance is required such as that consequent upon an existential shock, and occasioning questioning of identity and independence in reflecting on function and meaning in the context of the city in its entirety. The process has its parallels in examples evident in the east. With the revival of the fruitful competition between the historic old centre and New City West the question of relative advantages of specific, historically favoured identity has arisen again. For City West this denotes qualities which historically distinguish the west in its role as financial investor and promoter of development which will benefit the whole city as well as City West.
