This study explores how social identities, behaviors, and settings interact to shape urban dynamics, with gentrification and neighborhood stigmatization as example phenomena of city life. Using affect control theory (ACT) simulations, we demonstrate how social identities and behaviors recursively influence the affective meanings attributed to urban settings, thus driving local cultural change. In the case of gentrification, the simulation illustrates how positive identities, such as those related to the creative class, transform stigmatized neighborhoods into attractive spaces. Analyses of segregated areas reveal the self-reinforcing cycle of stigma. The simulations are based on a comparative empirical analysis of impression formation in settings in French and German language cultures. Our findings highlight overall similarities in impression formation across these cultures, with some subtle differences: Context effects of behavior are somewhat stronger among German survey respondents, and French participants rely more heavily on fundamental sentiments. This study shows how ACT simulations bridge the gap between qualitative and quantitative analysis and between micro and macro level of analysis, offering a novel framework for explaining urban interactions and local cultural change.
Affect Control Theory (ACT) posits that the micro-foundation of the social order lies in affective meanings consensually shared within a culture. This study challenges the assumption of consensus in affective culture by integrating ACT with Cultural Consensus Theory and sociological perspectives, offering a view of affective culture as both consensual and fragmented. Using Bayesian methods and data from surveys conducted in France and Germany, the analysis reveals that despite broad consensus, systematic patterns of fragmentation emerge, particularly in the evaluation dimension, which interacts with potency and activity. Moreover, the study shows that cultural competence varies across social positions, reflecting broader social dynamics. These findings advance ACT research methodologically and contribute to understanding how cultural consensus and fragmentation interact in the affective culture.
Comprehensive evidence on affective polarization stems from bipartisan political systems with well-defined partisan identities and unidimensional measures of ingroup favoritism and outgroup dislike, while neglecting shared emotions and intergroup emotional dynamics. This study addresses these gaps. Before the 2021 German federal elections, we surveyed individuals in Germany concerned about climate change (N=2,477) or asylum policies (N=3,177) using a large, innovative social media sample. We assessed positive and negative feelings toward supporters and opponents of progressive policies on these issues and the perceived emotional alignment with these opinion-based groups. Cluster analyses reveal two affectively polarized groups, a group of resenters characterized by negative affect and emotional disalignment, and three groups showing affective differentiation but lacking emotional identification. Compared to the other groups, the two polarized opinion-based groups perceive themselves as being more emotionally similar to like-minded citizens and more dissimilar from those with opposing views. They also experience consistent, yet distinct patterns of emotions towards like-minded and dissenting others regarding anger, disgust, contempt, and joy. The two groups are socio-demographically distinct and have less contact with people holding opposite views. These structural divisions are reflected in behavioral patterns. Polarized groups engage in more political discussions, especially with strong ties. However, only polarized conservatives tend to engage in political discussions with weak ties, such as colleagues or acquaintances. Polarized progressives are more likely to engage in collective forms of political mobilization. In essence, this work underscores the interplay among the emotional, structural, and interactional components of issue-based affective polarization.
This article investigates the potential of the block as a tool for sustainable and inclusive urban design. It aims to identify the morphological and typological principles that make the block a resilient structure, capable of ensuring density, spatial clarity, and a balanced relationship between public, collective, and private spheres. Focusing on reformed urban blocks built in Berlin between 1890 and 1940, this paper examines the intersection of urban morphology, housing reform, and metropolitan architecture, addressing them not primarily as historical objects, but as spatial and typological models relevant to contemporary urban challenges. The research is based on historical and archival sources, morphological analysis, typological classification, and the systematic redrawing of selected case studies at multiple scales, from the urban fabric to apartment layouts and architectural details. Exemplary cases were selected and redrawn in order to allow direct comparison and measurement of spatial and typological features. The results identify recurring block configurations, housing layouts, and architectural solutions that mediate density, livability, and urban clarity, showing the Berlin reform block as a lasting design paradigm that offers enduring lessons for contemporary challenges of density, sustainability, and urban quality.

As data are becoming increasingly important resources for municipal administrations in the context of urban development, formalization of urban data governance (DG) is considered a prerequisite to systematic municipal data practice for the common good. Unlike for larger cities, it is unclear how common such formalized DG is in rural districts and small towns. We therefore mapped the current status quo in small municipalities in Germany as a case exemplifying the broader phenomenon. We systematically searched online for policy documents on DG in all metropolitan regions, all rural districts, and a quota sample of nearly a sixth of all German small towns. We then performed content analysis of the identified documents along predefined categories of urban development. Results show that hardly any small towns dispose of relevant policy documents. Rural districts are somewhat more active in formally defining DG. Identified policy documents tend to address mostly economic activities, social infrastructure, and demography, whereas Housing and Urban design and public space are among the least mentioned categories of urban development.
The persistently lower participation of women in entrepreneurial activities constitutes a significant economic and societal problem. This study investigates the entrepreneurial intentions (EI) of university students and graduates from the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam from a gender-specific perspective, with the central aim of identifying the reasons for the continuing differences in EIs between men and women. The theoretical framework is based on the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), which was extended in this study by the construct of entrepreneurial self-identity to gain a more comprehensive understanding of EI. Using structural equation modeling, an analysis was conducted for the entire cohort as well as stratified by gender, examining how attitude, social norms, perceived behavioral control, and entrepreneurial self-identity influence EI. The results of the online survey, in which 414 students and graduates participated between June 2nd and July 14th, 2023, show that men exhibit significantly higher EIs than women. Furthermore, it was demonstrated that risk-taking propensity contributes to these gender differences. Moreover, perceived behavioral control and parental role models proved to be crucial determinants for the EIs of women, while these factors did not significantly relate to the intentions of men. The analysis underscores the complexity of gender differences in EIs and implies that considering gender-specific factors in targeted support measures for universities can help reduce gender differences and thus better leverage the entrepreneurial potential of women.
