Smart glasses and AI-powered “phygital spaces” are transforming how people perceive, navigate, and interact with the world. Yet existing regulatory frameworks - Privacy by design and Human Rights by design - focus narrowly on data protection and overlook the relational and collective dynamics these technologies disrupt. This article introduces the ‘ethics of interactions’ as a complementary framework that situates regulation within the lived realities of AI-mediated environments. Our interdisciplinary team, combining law, speculative design, and human–computer interaction, developed a year-long methodology spanning speculative storytelling, legal mapping, field diaries, and role-play based workshops in Germany and Israel. These exercises revealed how smart glasses might reshape trust, consent and perception, through five recurring modes of interaction: person-to-person, person-to-space, person-to-reality, person-to-machine, and person-to-platform. Workshop role-play surfaced vulnerabilities that conventional legal analysis misses, from peer-to-peer surveillance and emotional inference to corporate, platform and government control of augmented realities. Building on these findings, we propose regulatory recommendations that combine dual governance models, interaction-sensitive safeguards, and investment in digital literacy for policymakers. By embedding speculative inquiry into policy design, this study closes the loop between abstract principles and lived dilemmas, offering both conceptual and practical pathways for governing phygital spaces.
Critical Interactivity

We propose critical interactivity as a concept to study and design the dynamic and transitory aspects of data visualizations. Theoretically, interactivity is often described as the means to support analytical tasks, while in practice, it encompasses the techniques that alter visual representations. These notions are a useful starting point to study the role of interactivity in critical engagements with data visualizations. At the core of critical interactivity is the negotiation of authority and agency: authority as authors provide structure and context, and agency as viewers navigate and interpret the data on their own terms. This raises the critical question: who has the power to control the visualization? Drawing from four case studies in science communication, art history, anthropology, and climate advocacy, we examine how critical interactivity links exploration and narration. We reflect on the effort involved in preparing data and propose design strategies for implementing critical interactivity in data visualization.
Finding evocative and sensitive digital representations for cultural heritage collections requires careful implementation and collaboration, encompassing data modeling, cataloging, ideation and prototyping. In this article, we present design-oriented research focused on visualizing a photo archive about the Jewish diaspora. Our aim is to create a web platform that offers multiple exploratory and narrative experiences. We reflect on our approach, which involves both digital and analog methods, emphasizing the affordances of visual cultural heritage and the unique characteristics of a Jewish heritage collection.
This work investigates personal perspectives in visualization annotations as devices for collective data-driven storytelling. Inspired by existing efforts in critical cartography, we show how people share personal memories in a visualization of COVID-19 data and how comments by other visualization readers influence the reading and understanding of visualizations. Analyzing interaction logs, reader surveys, visualization annotations, and interviews, we find that reader annotations help other viewers relate to other people's stories and reflect on their own experiences. Further, we found that annotations embedded directly into the visualization can serve as social traces guiding through a visualization and help readers contextualize their own stories. With that, they supersede the attention paid to data encodings and become the main focal point of the visualization.
With this research we present an approach to network visualization that expands the capabilities for visual encoding and interactive exploration through edges in node-link diagrams. Compared to the various possibilities for visual and interactive properties of nodes, there are few techniques for interactive visualization of multivariate edge attributes in node-link diagrams. Visualization of edge attributes is oftentimes limited by occlusion and space issues of methods that globally encode attributes in a node-link diagram for all edges, not sufficiently exploiting the potential of interaction. Building up on existing techniques for edge encoding and interaction, we propose 'Unfolding Edges' as an exemplary use of an on-demand detail enhancing approach for exploration of multivariate edge attributes.

We present a multi-dimensional, multi-level, and multi-channel approach to data visualization for the purpose of constructive climate journalism. Data visualization has assumed a central role in environmental journalism and is often used in data stories to convey the dramatic consequences of climate change and other ecological crises. However, the emphasis on the catastrophic impacts of climate change tends to induce feelings of fear, anxiety, and apathy in readers. Climate mitigation, adaptation, and protection—all highly urgent in the face of the climate crisis—are at risk of being overlooked. These topics are more difficult to communicate as they are hard to convey on varying levels of locality, involve multiple interconnected sectors, and need to be mediated across various channels from the printed newspaper to social media platforms. So far, there has been little research on data visualization to enhance affective engagement with data about climate protection as part of solution-oriented reporting of climate change. With this research we characterize the unique challenges of constructive climate journalism for data visualization and share findings from a research and design study in collaboration with a national newspaper in Germany. Using the affordances and aesthetics of travel postcards, we present Klimakarten, a data journalism project on the progress of climate protection at multiple spatial scales (from national to local), across five key sectors (agriculture, buildings, energy, mobility, and waste), and for print and online use. The findings from quantitative and qualitative analysis of reader feedback confirm our overall approach and suggest implications for future work.

Cultural collections have transcended the boundaries of physical showcases and storage cabinets, evolving into intricate digital webs of interconnected data. The research project Restaging Fashion aimed to expand the possibilities for experiencing the linkages in digitized cultural heritage, focusing on the visualization of collection holdings related to the history of garments. Through graph-based narratives, the project investigated the complex interplay between the linear – and at times tentative – art historical discourses and the non-linear explorations of associated cultural heritage data. The resulting visualizations have been designed with the aim to allow for curated and dynamic exploration of the collection along research essays and their interrelated graphs.
From Sketching to Coding

This workshop will explore strategies for teaching visualization literacy - from sketching to creating visualizations using computational tools. Led by instructors from the humanities, visual analytics, design, and computer science, sessions will discuss different methodologies and challenges of teaching visualization to audiences with varied technical and disciplinary expertise and goals.

Die Historische Netzwerkanalyse (HNA) hat sich zu einem etablierten Forschungsfeld entwickelt. Zu ihren wichtigsten methodischen Herausforderungen gehört die Suggestionskraft von Visualisierungen. Die Transparenz bezüglich der Datenquellen ist daher für die HNA sowohl bei selbst erhobenen als auch bei sekundär genutzten Daten Voraussetzung, will sie geisteswissenschaftlichen Kriterien der Nachprüfbarkeit und Nachvollziehbarkeit von Interpretationen erfüllen. Dieser Beitrag beschreibt und diskutiert – aufbauend auf einem iterativen und durch Workshops sowie einer Nutzer*innenstudie begleiteten Forschungsprozess – vier Designziele zur Verwirklichung einer solchen Transparenz: 1) Aufnahme und Kommunikation von Datenprovenienzen, 2) Dokumentation vorausgegangener Prozesse, 3) Offenhaltung der Interpretierbarkeit der Daten und 4) Unterstützung von Folgeforschung. Anschließend werden beispielhafte Umsetzungsstrategien in Form von Prototypen präsentiert.
