The SPIM workshop focuses especially on people that are working on the social or semantic Web, machine learning, user modeling, recommender systems, information retrieval, semantic interaction, or their combination. The goal is to bring together researchers and practitioners to initiating discussions on the different requirements and challenges coming with the social and semantic Web for personalized information retrieval systems. The workshop aims at improving the exchange of ideas between the different research communities and practitioners involved in the research on semantic personalized information management.
The Reason Why
(2014)
Recommender Systems refer to those applications that offer contents or items to the users, based on their previous activity. These systems are broadly used in several fields and applications, being common that an user interact with several recommender systems during his daily activities. However, most of these systems are black boxes which users really don’t understand how to work. This lack of transparency often causes the distrust of the users. A suitable solution is to offer explanations to the user about why the system is offering such recommendations. This work deals with the problem of retrieving and evaluating explanations based on hybrid recommenders. These explanations are meant to improve the perceived recommendation quality from the user’s perspective. Along with recommended items, explanations are presented to the user to underline the quality of the recommendation. Hybrid recommenders should express relevance by providing reasons speaking for a recommended item. In this work we present an attribute explanation retrieval approach to provide these reasons and show how to evaluate such approaches. Therefore, we set up an online user study where users were asked to provide movie feedback. For each rated movie we additionally retrieved feedback about the reasons this movie was liked or disliked. With this data, explanation retrieval can be studied in general, but it can also be used to evaluate such explanations.
The CLEF-2024 CheckThat! Lab
(2024)
The first five editions of the CheckThat! lab focused on the main tasks of the information verification pipeline: check-worthiness, evidence retrieval and pairing, and verification. Since the 2023 edition, it has been focusing on new problems that can support the research and decision making during the verification process. In this new edition, we focus on new problems and -for the first time- we propose six tasks in fifteen languages (Arabic, Bulgarian, English, Dutch, French, Georgian, German, Greek, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Slovene, Spanish, and code-mixed Hindi-English): Task 1 estimation of check-worthiness (the only task that has been present in all CheckThat! editions), Task 2 identification of subjectivity (a follow up of CheckThat! 2023 edition), Task 3 identification of persuasion (a follow up of SemEval 2023), Task 4 detection of hero, villain, and victim from memes (a follow up of CONSTRAINT 2022), Task 5 Rumor Verification using Evidence from Authorities (a first), and Task 6 robustness of credibility assessment with adversarial examples (a first). These tasks represent challenging classification and retrieval problems at the document and at the span level, including multilingual and multimodal settings.
The five editions of the CheckThat! lab so far have focused on the main tasks of the information verification pipeline: check-worthiness, evidence retrieval and pairing, and verification. The 2023 edition of the lab zooms into some of the problems and - for the first time - it offers five tasks in seven languages (Arabic, Dutch, English, German, Italian, Spanish, and Turkish): Task 1 asks to determine whether an item, text or a text plus an image, is check-worthy; Task 2 requires to assess whether a text snippet is subjective or not; Task 3 looks for estimating the political bias of a document or a news outlet; Task 4 requires to determine the level of factuality of a document or a news outlet; and Task 5 is about identifying authorities that should be trusted to verify a contended claim.
The fifth edition of the CheckThat! Lab is held as part of the 2022 Conference and Labs of the Evaluation Forum (CLEF). The lab evaluates technology supporting various factuality tasks in seven languages: Arabic, Bulgarian, Dutch, English, German, Spanish, and Turkish. Task 1 focuses on disinformation related to the ongoing COVID-19 infodemic and politics, and asks to predict whether a tweet is worth fact-checking, contains a verifiable factual claim, is harmful to the society, or is of interest to policy makers and why. Task 2 asks to retrieve claims that have been previously fact-checked and that could be useful to verify the claim in a tweet. Task 3 is to predict the veracity of a news article. Tasks 1 and 3 are classification problems, while Task 2 is a ranking one.
We describe the fourth edition of the CheckThat! Lab, part of the 2021 Cross-Language Evaluation Forum (CLEF). The lab evaluates technology supporting various tasks related to factuality, and it is offered in Arabic, Bulgarian, English, and Spanish. Task 1 asks to predict which tweets in a Twitter stream are worth fact-checking (focusing on COVID-19). Task 2 asks to determine whether a claim in a tweet can be verified using a set of previously fact-checked claims. Task 3 asks to predict the veracity of a target news article and its topical domain. The evaluation is carried out using mean average precision or precision at rank k for the ranking tasks, and F1 for the classification tasks.
Studiengang Archiv-, Bibliotheks- und Dokumentationswissenschaften an der Fachhochschule Potdam
(1994)
SemRes
(2016)
Documentation is very time consuming; conservators have to categorize photos, give detailed description of the procedures and justify decisions about materials. Every conservator delivers his/her own documentation to the respective monument administrations that archive it in their shelves, without any possibility to access them digitally. In this case, the access to already conducted procedures, as well as the provision of the knowledge about the methods and materials used are very difficult often almost impossible. The SemRes System provides conservators with semantic technologies in order to better structure and retrieve their knowledge and supports them in decision-making for conservation and conservation procedures.
In a time of climate change and growing activism, understanding how people access information is crucial. This research arises from ongoing government discussions on ecological policies and recent debates in Germany about ecological heating regulations and their cost implications. This study specifically focuses on the information seeking behavior on topics related to environmental sustainability. After reviewing existing research on information behavior, risk perception, and climate change communication, we investigate how participants search for information by surveying students. The findings could potentially inform strategies for sharing information and promoting action in Germany’s context of climate change and sustainability.
Context-aware information is widely available in various ways and is becoming more and more important for enhancing retrieval performance and recommendation results. The current main issue to cope with is not only recommending or retrieving the most relevant items and content, but defining them ad hoc. Other relevant issues include personalizing and adapting the information and the way it is displayed to the user's current situation and interests.
The workshop on Context-awareness in Retrieval and Recommendation is a forum for research on context-awareness in information retrieval, recommender systems and human computer interaction. The fourth iteration of the workshop was organized in conjunction to the 36th European Conference on Information Retrieval in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
The 17th International Conference on Knowledge Management was held in the historic city of Potsdam, Germany. The conference was among the first post-pandemic face to face conferences, and the overall theme of the 17th edition of the ICKM conference rightly focused on “Knowledge, Uncertainty and Risks: From individual to global scale” at different levels of analysis and agency.
