Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) of civil engineering structures is experiencing an increasing progress in the last decades. The present work focuses on the static behavior of a highway bridge due to environmental temperature effects. The goal of the present study was to test the applicability of the satellite-based synthetic aperture radar interferometry (InSAR) for deformation monitoring of a large, curved highway bridge and to compare the obtained results with alternative measurement techniques like classical geodesy surveying and with an advanced computer simulation. Such a comparison is quite rare and provides an important insight into the accuracy, efficiency and limitations of the InSAR technique in the context of SHM. Especially interesting was the question whether the InSAR technique is suitable for blind monitoring of a cluster of bridges in the region of interest. The present study shows that a pre-knowledge about each structure can be very important for a reliable interpretation of the InSAR measurement results. The second challenge of the study was to overcome several objective difficulties of combining and comparing quite different monitoring techniques that result from different sampling rates, measurement points and other specific features and sensitivities. Nevertheless, a suitable approach has been developed and implemented in the present study for the InSAR and total station measurements, providing new results and important knowledge about novel SHM techniques.

The study included six bitumens, one unmodified and five modified, and their corresponding asphalt mixtures. The first bitumen was the base bitumen and further five variants were made by the authors using the same base bitumen and different combinations of modifiers which included styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS), Fischer–Tropsch wax (FTW), ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA), reactive elastomeric terpolymer (RET), and natural asphalt (NA). The influence on the fatigue life of bitumen and asphalt due to modification, bitumen rheology, preload, water storage, and aging was studied. A new temperature range was developed—the fatigue-relevant temperature range (FRTR) for specifying fatigue test temperatures for bitumen and asphalt. A new methodology that includes preload and water storage was also done to study the active adhesion behavior between bitumen and aggregates and its influence on fatigue life. Overall, modifications showed positive influence on the fatigue behavior of bitumen and asphalt. Variants E (SBS and RET) and F (SBS and NA) showed the greatest positive influence with an increase in the fatigue life by 500% and 210% for bitumen and 200% and 375% for asphalt respectively. With water storage, the fatigue life reduced by 500% for unmodified asphalt and in the range of 333–1350% for modified ones. Due to aging, the fatigue life reduced from 700% for unmodified and between 700% and 2500% for modified asphalt mixtures.
The recommendation is based on the co-authors’ work organized by the RILEM TC 256-SPF “Spalling of concrete due to fire: testing and modelling”. It aims to provide useful information, guidance and best practices in fire spalling assessment to laboratories that perform large-scale tests based on fire resistance test standards. It provides guidance on the spalling observation techniques during testing, as well as post-test spalling quantification/assessment methods. This document is intended to be used in conjunction with the fire resistance test standards, e.g. EN 1363-1 and ISO 834-1.
The recommendation is based on the co-authors’ work organized by the RILEM TC 256-SPF “Spalling of concrete due to fire: testing and modelling”. The Committee has defined two types of screening tests for characterization of concrete propensity to fire spalling: Material screening tests and Product screening tests. Definitions of both types of tests are given in the paper. The following recommendations apply to Material screening tests. The material screening tests described in these recommendations are a set of minimum requirements to test concrete spalling propensity (for example, the minimal specimen size). This document covers the aspects of concrete characterization, specimen geometries, storage conditions, test methods and measured parameters.

With the growing awareness of environmental issues, raw earth construction in its various forms is experiencing a renewed interest. In fact, earth is a natural material that limits energy consumption and plays an important role in terms of humidity and temperature regulation. The demand for bio-based building materials and the addition of plant aggregates on earth building bricks is also increasing. This study focuses on the characterization of three unfired commercialized earth adobe bricks with different percentage of plant aggregates. The characterization of the constituents of the different adobe bricks has been first realized by conducting wet sieving tests, sedimentation, Atterberg limit and density tests. The performances of adobe bricks were then investigated and compared in terms of mechanical properties and durability considering freezing-thawing cycles and dry abrasion. The compressive strength is an important property but presents significant variations due to several influencing factors like source, proportion of constituent materials, curing condition, workmanship, in addition to testing procedure. Several specimens have been tested to quantify the compressive strength variability. In addition, as no consensus on the test design and limited data exists on the influence of specimen’s geometry and correlation between testing procedures and mechanical properties, a campaign of unconfined compressive tests has been conducted where several parameters have been varied such as specimen orientation and use of mortar or not. The tensile strength has been also measured with the indirect tensile test method. The effect of freezing thawing cycles was evaluated by subjecting the bricks to unconfined compressive tests after 3, 6, 9 and 12 freezing-thawing cycles. The results show a significant effect of the testing procedure on the compressive strength values. In addition, a decrease in the mechanical properties has been observed for adobe bricks exposed to freezing-thawing cycles.
The focus of the summer school was on interdisciplinary cooperation. Students and lecturers from the Potsdam University of the three building studies (Architecture and Urban planning, Civil Engineering and Conservation and Restoration) as well as from the Uzbek side from the fields of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Applied Arts devoted themselves to the building with different tasks. A key project goal was to enable students to perceive, recognize and examine a building through long-term study on the spot under professional guidance from various disciplines. They got to know different approaches to a monument together, to practice different investigation and measurement methods and to discuss and interpret the results obtained.

Structural assessments of existing older prestressed concrete bridges according to the currently applicable standards and guidelines in Germany generally reveal significant deficiencies in shear reinforcement. Large-scale tests within the scope of research activities commissioned by the Federal Highway Research Institute (BASt) were carried out at TU Dortmund University to analyze the shear load-bearing behavior of continuous prestressed concrete beams in more detail. The Arch Action Model (AAM) was derived from the Simplified Arch Action Model (SAAM) to provide a possible analysis method for determining shear contribution from concrete. Thus, the shear capacity of prestressed beams can be determined in a more realistic manner than using the truss model underlying the current state of standardization. The paper at hand provides information and explanations about the SAAM and AAM with regard to their application to real-world structures for structural bridge assessments.
Integral bridge with RS-Overpass technology : step into the future of standard highway overpasses
(2023)
Starting from Germany, the VFT bridge girder technology (prefabricated composite beam) has spread in several European countries in the last decades as further development of the standard steel-concrete composite solution. Its configuration fits perfectly to integral frame bridges built over existing infrastructure with the scope to minimize the traffic disturbance. In this paper a further development with the focus on cost efficiency in span ranges of 40-55 m is proposed: the RS-Overpass technology. The change consists in using standard rolled sections by adapting them into the integral frame bridge configuration, further enhancing the structural efficiency with the benefits of high-steel strength. The constructive details to achieve the polygonal form have been studied to allow easy fabrication and a maximal clearance height over highway traffic lanes. The RS-Overpass solution is conceived as the economic option of standard highway overpasses, with the aim of a overall construction cost reduction of 5%. The possibility of weathering steel or hot-dip galvanization create the unique offer for a maintenance-free solution.
The introduction of composite dowels (CDs) in Europe at the beginning of the last decade led to the creation of new forms of composite bridges in which a T-profile is used instead of an I-beam. Both the construction and design methods are new [4]. Experiences from the construction of new bridges and discussion between the authors lead to new significant conclusions, which should be included in the new European approval (CEN-TS). The problem of design formulas for concrete dowels is presented.
Composite dowels have opened new possibilities for engineers designing composite structures. The fundamental and most important characteristic of composite dowels is the shape of the cutting line. It is important to understand why only one particular shape of the cutting line is used in bridge engineering, while so many different shapes have been investigated by many researchers. The essential part of the process of developing composite dowels – the development of the shape of the cutting line – is presented in this paper. The influence of the steel web thickness is presented, and technological problems of steel fabrication are highlighted. The role of empirical experience from the first bridges, push-out tests, and finite element simulations is presented. Assumptions for numerical procedures are given. The distinction between the steel failure and concrete failure modes is introduced for composite dowels. The paper presents how the concept of “shape” was divided into “shape,” “ratio,” and finally “size,” and how, because of the fatigue problems in bridges, all the three factors have emerged to result in the form of shapes that can satisfy the requirements for bridges. Research leading to the invention of the first version of the clothoidal shape is presented.
Roads overpassing highways or speedways are rather a common case, as such bridges occur in average every 2 km of highways in densely populated areas. Due to the high number and similar boundary conditions, the design and realization tends to be standardized and repetitive. The total length ranges mostly between 40 and 55 m, whereas the construction height is a limiting factor since minimumclearance heights must be guaranteed both for safety as well as for driving comfort. Due to these reasons, highway overpasses have been a field of application where steel-framed composite decks have proventheir efficiency for this task. Starting from Germany, the VFT technology (prefabricated composite beam) has spread in several European countries in the last decades as further development of the standard steel-concrete composite solution. Its configuration fits perfectly to integral frame bridges built over existing infrastructure with the scope to minimize the traffic disturbance. In this paper a further step is proposed: the VFT-RS technology. The change consists in using standard rolled sections by adapting them into the integral frame bridge configuration, further enhancing the structural efficiency with the benefits of high-steel strength. The possibility of weathering steel or hot-dip galvanization create the unique offer of a maintenance-free solution.

At the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam, students are introduced to working with built structures in the field of practical building analysis in the master's degree in civil engineering. The basis for the existing analysis is the geometry, materials used and the structure. New structural calculations are required for modifications or extensions. The students are taught which non-destructive testing methods can be used to determine the material properties of the building fabric. In addition, it is presented how the teaching is structured and using examples that show that teaching can be designed to be very practice-relevant.
This paper introduces (both formally and technically) a new concept: a hybrid steel–concrete cross section. The definition is based on the shear force transmission mechanism and it assumes the existence of a new type of shear connections, i.e. composite dowels. The hybrid cross-section is a generalization of composite steel-and-reinforced concrete cross sections and it is defined by a new way of dimensioning for vertical shear. The hybrid cross section concept is based on a specific approach to the lever arm of internal forces and an assumption that the local shear transfer mechanism of composite dowels is different than in the case of classic welded studs. The concept makes it possible to show by design calculations that the shear force is transferred through jointly the concrete part and the steel part. It is worth emphasizing that the proposed concept is a response to the new opportunities provided to engineers by composite dowels and to the fact that the bridge structures designed nowadays are different from the ones designed previously. The concept enables the design of completely new types of composite steel–concrete beams. The presented theoretical analyses verified by means of FEM show how the change of the shear connection level influences the division of the shear force in the cross section. This is included in the design concept through the internal lever arm of the hybrid section. The proposed concept has been shown to be internally consistent and complete.
Simulation tools aimed at enhancing cross-sectoral cooperation can support the transition from a traditional transport planning approach based on predictions towards more integrated and participatory urban mobility planning. This shift entails a broader appraisal of urban dynamics and transformations in the policy framework, capitalizing on new developments in urban modelling. In this paper, we argue that participatory social simulation can be used to solve these emerging challenges in mobility planning. We identify the functionalities that such a tool should have when supporting integrated mobility planning. Drawing on a transdisciplinary case study situated in Potsdam, Germany, we address through interviews and workshops stakeholders’ needs and expectations and present the requirements of an actionable tool for practitioners. As a result, we present three main challenges for participatory, simulation-based transport planning, including: (1) enhancement of the visioning process by testing stakeholders’ ideas under different scenarios and conditions to visualise complex urban relationships; (2) promotion of collective exchange as means to support stakeholder communication; and (3) credibility increase by early stakeholder engagement with model development. We discuss how our participatory modelling approach helps us to better understand the gaps in the knowledge of the planning process and present the coming steps of the project.
Facades must meet with continuously increasing requirements concerning design quality and technical performance. It will be shown that neither extremely simplifying nor highly detailed simulation tools with complete geometrical representation really help to develop new facade types during the early stages of design. Due to simplified physical modelling, conceptual variations may not be adequately represented and this means that different properties cannot be seen. Detailed simulation programs provide proof - but in most cases only with regard to a single aspect of facade qualities – of whether a well defined set of parameters is already given and if an adequate representation is already integrated. This often prevents the perception of interdependencies and hinders the
development of ideas. Based on the author’s experience concerning simulation techniques and the process of facade consultancy services, a method with an adapted degree of abstraction was developed. Combined modelling of thermal, sound insulation and ventilation aspects during early design stages is described and a new multilayered facade is presented.
Roebling became acquainted with Navier's theory at the Berlin Bauakademie in 1824/25. During his road planning work in Westphalia, he developed several suspension bridge projects in 1828. Roebling's travels along the Rhein and Ruhr in the winter of 1828 were connected with these projects. Roebling supplemented his notes on Dietlein's bridge-building lectures at the Berlin Bauakademie with excerpts from newer literature on suspension bridges. Under the title "Remarks on Bridge Construction" he discussed the results of his studies. Four known bridge projects can be distinguished. Two are only elaborated as an idea, in one case the project is only known by official letters. Only in the case of the Freienohl Bridge is there an exact description of the project. None of them have been brought to realization. Security considerations of the Berlin Oberbaudeputation probably led to the decision not to execute Roebling's Finnentrop project. This decision ought to be understood within the context of a bridge collapse in Nienburg /Saale in December 1825. When Roebling immigrated to the United States, he used his knowledge in construction methods and experiences with an experimental approach. For this reason, it is interesting to compare the early German projects with his first American bridges. While Roebling's first canal aqueducts combined suspension bridges with trusses, the Niagara Bridge marks a radical step forward to another dimension and to a new approach that emphasized thinking in terms of "systems". Interestingly, he also consistently maintained his construction principle for attaining stability by using rigid, wrapped main cables, inclined stays and wooden trusswork. Although he later used wrought iron profiles, he continued to use wooden constructions in his basic plans for a long time. There is no evidence that he made any contribution to the theories of trusses in a manner comparable with Whipple, Culmann, Gerber or others. Roebling's special talent lay in his constructive gifts.
Background
Conservators and architects working with built heritage at risk from ground moisture intrusion face a difficult choice. Leaving the building unprotected can lead to moisture related deterioration; installing vertical and/or horizontal barriers using standard materials requires chemical or mechanical intervention with the historic fabric. The use of compacted clay to form a barrier is commonplace in some areas of environmental engineering, and can be applied to built heritage conservation. Naturally occurring or slightly modified soils were traditionally used for protecting buildings in a number of vernacular techniques. Knowledge of what types of soils are suitable for use could provide certain regions with a low-cost, low-impact alternative for protecting historic buildings. Three commercially available products previously shown to have low hydraulic conductivity were analysed in order to identify waterproofing mechanisms; these included two specialised bentonite–sand mixtures and a Saxonian glacial till.
Results
The till relies on a high proportion of densely agglomerated fine grains to achieve a low permeability when consolidated, possibly assisted by the presence of calcite. The specialised mixtures rely on an engineered grain size distribution, with practically no silt sized grains, and a fraction of sodium bentonites capable of forming colloidal suspension when compacted. All materials showed a low risk of shrinkage when compacted at optimum moisture content.
Conclusion
Different mechanisms appear to account for the low hydraulic conductivities found in clay barrier material. The implication is that a range of soil material may be suitable for protecting built heritage from ground moisture intrusion and its associated decay mechanisms. The suitability of glacial till may present large areas of Northern Europe with locally available barrier material.
The German Association for Water, Wastewater and Waste e.V. (DWA) has published a new standard for the dimensioning, construction, and operation of constructed wetlands for treatment of domestic and municipal wastewater. The changes to the standard are based on a wide range of experience gained in recent years in Germany and Europe. For the first time ever, the standard has been officially translated and published in English. This paper summarizes the new standard for secondary treatment of domestic wastewater with classical one-stage unsaturated vertical flow (VF) wetlands, VF wetlands with lava sand for treatment of wastewater from combined sewer systems, and actively aerated VF and horizontal flow (HF) flow wetlands. Two-stage unsaturated VF wetlands treating raw wastewater (French VF wetlands), are also included in the new standard. HF wetlands are no longer described in the standard for secondary treatment of domestic wastewater. This does not exclude their application. Existing HF wetland systems in Germany may continue to be operated so long as effluent parameters are met and proper operations and maintenance is ensured. This paper gives an overview of the new design standard, including key information on wastewater type and loading, as well as primary attributes of each wetland design.

The ability to perform credible CFD simulations at accelerated speeds has opened up the potential for a new use-mode for CFD as a tool in engineering: the application of CFD for first-order parameter-space exploration, analysis, and design com- munication. When coupled with a suitable real-time rendering and interaction capability for in-situ visualisation and manipulation of 3D results, CFD may be used as part of an interactive design tool in virtual engineering. These steerable applications represent a paradigm shift in the application of CFD for engineering and offer the potential to transform the way CFD is used within the industry. This article presents developments towards a production-ready virtual wind tunnel including presentation of an integrated, interactive modelling and simulation tool for aerodynamic design and analysis built using the Unreal Engine 4 game engine. The virtual wind tunnel application provides a mechanism for integrating virtual reality observation, navigation, visualisation and in-game interaction with a flow field simulated using our own GPU-accelerated CFD library based on the lattice-Boltzmann method. Objects may be imported from CAD or reconstructed using Microsoft Kinect-based 3D scanning. Simulation parameters may be modified at run-time by the user. The flow solver has been validated against experimental data for a representative tur- bulent flow and demonstrates excellent agreement with available data.
