Die Fachhochschule Potsdam hat am ersten Januar 1993 das Informationszentrum für Informationswissenschaft und -praxis(IZ) übernommen. Die Hauptaufgabe des IZ ist die Produktion der bibliographischen informationswissenschaftlichen Datenbank INFODATA. INFODATA enthält gegenwärtig über 65.000 Dokumentationseinheiten. Die Datenbank wird seit 1976 geführt. Der monatliche Input beträgt 250 Dokumentationseinheiten. Die Vermittlung erfolgt durch die Hosts Fachinformationszentrum Technik e.V. Frankfurt a. Main und STN International Karlsruhe. Ab Mitte des Jahres 1994 wird INFODATA ebenfalls über die Gesellschaft für Betriebswirtschaftliche Information München zugänglich sein. Die Bereitstellung der Originalquellen übernimmt die Bibliothek des IZ, die in die zentrale Bibliothek der Fachhochschule Potsdam eingegliedert wurde. Seit Beendigung der Stabilisierungsphase Mitte 1993 befindet sich das IZ in der Phase der Diskussion über die zukünftige Entwicklung. Im Mittelpunkt dieser Diskussion stehen folgende Themen: - weitere inhaltliche Entwicklung der Datenbank INFODATA auf der Basis der Analyse der Kundenstruktur; - Effektivierung der Arbeitsorganisation und die weitere Integration von Informations- und Bibliotheksarbeit; - Einsatz neuer ermarktungsstrategien; -Einbindung des Informationszentrums in die Forschungsprozesse der Fachhochschule Potsdam.
