In this paper we present a methodological framework for usefulness evaluation of digital libraries and information services that has been tested successfully in two case studies before developing a corresponding tool that may be used for further investigations. The tool is based on a combination of a knowledge base with exploitable and modifiable questions and an open source tool for online-questionnaires.
In this paper, we present a field study that examines the development, application and maintenance of classification systems and controlled vocabularies in three archives documenting lesbian, trans* and queer-feminist histories. Queer archives face the challenge of documenting identities that are inherently characterized by embracing fluidity and ambiguity. Thus, queer identities are diametrically opposed to archival procedures of unambiguous classification. At the same time, queer activism relies partly on coherent identity categories in order to be able to act politically. We examine the pragmatic solutions that queer archives establish when dealing with tensions between those requirements. Our goal is to contribute to the ongoing discussions about the ethical dimensions of classification practices. Following the work of Geoffrey C. Bowker and Susan Leigh Star (1999) we use the concept of boundary objects as a central theoretical foundation of our research. This concept allows for tracing the negotiations and decision-making processes that influenced the creation of a specific classification system. Through conducting semi-structured interviews with staff members of queer archives in Germany we collected data about their efforts to archive the history of queer communities. Although there are initiatives developing metadata standards for queer identities, these standards are only used to a limited extent by the queer archives we examined. Rather, those archives established individual strategies for categorizing objects that are rooted in their specific history. We argue that classification systems and controlled vocabularies themselves can be understood as artifacts documenting the history of queer movements.
The paper summarizes the results of an on-line survey which was executed 2010 in german archives of all branches. The survey focused
on metadata and used metadata standards for the annotation of audiovisual media like pictures, audio and video files (analog and digital).
The findings motivate the question whether archives are able to collaborate in projects like europeana if they do not use accepted standards for their orientation. Archives need more resources and archival staff need more training to execute more complex tasks in an digital and semantic
surrounding.
This bachelor thesis proposes a documentation concept to address the problem of missing and insufficient documentation during the creation of ontologies in companies. By presenting survey results and assumption personas, the thesis provides insights into the reality of ontology creation in a life science company. These insights indicate that there is a lack of knowledge externalization between the acquisition and formalization of knowledge. To develop an appropriate documentation concept, findings are derived by analyzing the practical insights as well as two ontology engineering methodologies proposed in literature. The outcome is a modular, highly customizable documentation concept designed for the application in companies. Using graphical documentation templates, guidelines are provided on what should be documented by whom, how and when.
This study aims to identify and compare the knowledge and information retrieval needs from past projects and for future work among Italian and Japanese engineers. Engineering work, which is knowledge-intensive, is all the more critical as it both uses and generates knowledge for product and process innovation. This research uses data collected from engineers in Italy and Japan from an online survey using open-ended questions in their native language. Answers were then translated into English and coded into pre-determined categories; statistical analyses including factor analysis were conducted. For knowledge to be retrieved from past work, both Italian and Japanese engineers identified mainly experiential and systemic knowledge assets. For knowledge to be captured for future work, both groups picked experiential as well as conceptual knowledge related to the competitive environment of the firm absent from knowledge needs from past work. Finally, this research uncovered almost twice as fewer meta-categories for knowledge needs to be captured for future work compared to knowledge to be retrieved from past projects, as the former are by nature speculative and, therefore, difficult to foresee. The study is limited to the engineering domain and to two countries. Further research should extend the scope beyond these two countries. The study identified information and knowledge needs that could help inform the design of procedures to capture and document engineering work and the development of supporting information systems. This research contributes to an increased understanding of the substance of information and knowledge needs in a knowledge-intensive environment such as engineering work and product/service development.
This paper presents a project that aims at supporting municipal stakeholders in rural areas by developing data-based applications in a collaborative process of stakeholders and a transfer team. In order to foster knowledge transfer in the domains of data literacy and data management on multiple levels a new approach is proposed that organizes the team competencies along the data life cycle.

This conference paper introduces "Information Didactics", defining it as a new didactics concept centering on the analysis of epistemic-culture-specific behaviour as a basis for the development of instructional activities. It broadens existing traditional conceptions of Information Literacy (IL) to create a universally adoptable didactical concept applicable not only to classical IL training but also
to other instructional activities in the field of Information Science, for example the development of data literacy skills.
