In these countries, in which the level of system integration varies from split to integrated systems, there is a growing interest in interprofessional collaboration (IPC) between ECEC, school, and family support (family services, welfare, and child protection services) to offer integrated services for children and their families. In a realist review of six countries with varying levels of ECEC system integration (in descending order of integration: Norway, Finland, Sweden, Germany, Flanders (Belgium) and the Netherlands), we analyzed the literature related to IPC between professionals from ECEC, school, and family support. The review showed various IPC mechanisms, including barriers and facilitators, for professionals working in ECEC who face similar challenges in achieving pedagogical continuity and offering integrated services in different countries. Using an example from the chemistry classroom, we illustrate how these technologies can enhance education and learning by fostering collaboration and shared understanding.Despite the vast potential of XR and VR, many of their applications remain isolated. Currently, sharing experiences often involves streaming onto a screen or verbal explanations, which can leave individuals feeling excluded if they are not directly involved. Even when multiple users wear VR or XR headsets, shared experiences are often limited to specific contexts like multiplayer VR games. Unfortunately, in domains such as education, work, or collaborative learning, these technologies are often underutilized. To bridge this gap, our study developed a prototype that leverages the eye-tracking and hand-tracking capabilities of the HoloLens2. This prototype enables collaborative interactions with 3D elements in an XR environment. By tracking participants' gaze within the XR scene, users can easily identify the element they are currently viewing. Through eye control and pinch gestures, users can manipulate digital content on the XR plane. When working within the same XR environment, users seamlessly share interactions and information, fostering a unified and collaborative experience with holograms. The current prototype is tailored to explore the intricate molecular details of sugar molecules within a collaborative XR environment. Teams of users can collectively delve into molecules such as fructose, glucose, galactose, and mannose, gaining deeper insights into their unique characteristics. Through interactions like eye-tracking and pinch gestures, users can directly interact with holographic 3D representations of these molecules. The prototype's user interface intuitively indicates which user is interacting with or observing each 3D object within the XR environment. Unlike conventional controllers, this prototype employs hand-tracking technology, enabling users to effortlessly navigate the XR interface using natural hand movements. This approach delivers an immersive and dynamic learning experience that surpasses traditional teaching methods, fostering heightened engagement and deeper understanding among learners. To assess the functionality and cognitive impact of the XR interface prototype, 19 participants were recruited for evaluation. Criteria for participant selection ensured they lacked prior knowledge or involvement in chemistry or related fields concerning sugar molecules. Following a brief introduction to the prototype's interaction patterns and eye calibration, participants engaged in testing across diverse learning scenarios. Initial survey findings suggest participants could swiftly distinguish between monosaccharides like glucose, fructose, galactose, and mannose based on their three-dimensional structures. However, results regarding gaze interaction evaluation are inconclusive and necessitate further experimentation. In our research project laeneAs (Ländliche Bildugnsumwelten junger Geflüchteter in der beruflichen Ausbildung/The Rural Educational Environments of Young Refugees in Vocational Training), we focus on educational barriers and good practices within the vocational education and training system (VET) for refugees in rural counties. In particular, racism and discrimination are significant barriers to refugee participation in society and education. Our contribution addresses the following research question: How is educational inclusion discussed and defined in and through real-world labs among stakeholders in four rural districts: social workers, educators, policymakers, administration, and young refugees? Methods: We initiated real-world labs as a space for collaborative research, reflection, and development to promote inclusive pathways for young refugees in vocational education and training in four research sites. We used futures labs as a method to identify key challenges and develop action plans as an activating method with stakeholders and refugee trainees. Our data consisted of audio recordings of group discussions in the real-world future labs, which were analyzed using deductive content analysis. Results: The analysis identified the following areas as important barriers to education and for practice transformation: (1) infrastructural and cultural barriers; (2) day-to-day problems in vocational schools and companies (3) restrictive immigration policies and regulations. Discussion: Educational barriers are imbedded in a contradictory immigration regime with reciprocal effects so that refugee trainees have difficulties in completing their education and further their social inclusion. On the other side of this contradictory immigration regime, social work and social networks provide fundamental support in obtaining a vocational qualification. Photographs, illustrations, infographics, data visualizations, and general images help convey complex topics to a wide audience. The way that visual artifacts influence how readers form an opinion beyond the text is an important issue to research, but there are few works about this topic. In this context, we research the persuasive, emotional and memorable dimensions of data visualizations and illustrations in journalistic storytelling for long-form articles. We conducted a user study and compared the effects which data visualizations and illustrations have on changing attitude towards a presented topic. While visual representations are usually studied along one dimension, in this experimental study, we explore the effects on readers' attitudes along three: persuasion, emotion, and information retention. By comparing different versions of the same article, we observe how attitudes differ based on the visual stimuli present, and how they are perceived when combined. Results indicate that the narrative using only data visualization elicits a stronger emotional impact than illustration-only visual support, as well as a significant change in the initial attitude about the topic. Our findings contribute to a growing body of literature on how visual artifacts may be used to inform and influence public opinion and debate. We present ideas for future work to generalize the results beyond the domain studied, the water crisis. The growing demand for data-savvy reporters with computational skills has been proven to shift the newsrooms’ culture in media companies across the globe. Previous research has documented journalists’ shift towards a data-centred epistemology and the increasingly important role of computation and data-driven practices in newsrooms. By focusing on inexperienced journalists as they mobilise data journalism for the first time, this research openly discusses its epistemology as a form of Foucauldian power: which epistemological tensions – individual or structural – emerge among newcomers when reporting extensively with data? The article presents the case of a newly formed data journalism team at taz, a German cooperative media company. It is based on qualitative data collected through action research, namely six in-depth interviews, auto-ethnographic notes and self-reflective inquiries. Data are framed through Foucault’s concepts of power and will to truth. Results show the discord between data journalism epistemology and its practical implementation. Despite prioritising democratic access to data, technologies and non-hierarchical forms of cooperation, data journalism remains largely dependent on traditional methods and culture. Descriptive analysis of the sustainable mobility planning practice in Germany JF - Transport Policy N2 - The current European guidelines for the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) promote a vertical (European, national, regional and local policy goals) and horizontal (sectorial and operational plans) integrated mobility planning approach based on the involvement of different target groups. However, how this involvement is implemented in practice is not sufficiently researched, and empirical data that go beyond a single case study are still to be developed. This paper aims to fill this gap by presenting an empirical assessment of planning practices. Through a mixed-method approach combining grounded theory and quantitative data analysis techniques, including co-occurrences analysis, association rules and network analysis, we analysed planning documents (n = 67) and identified patterns in which target groups are involved through an array of participation methods aiming for different participation goals within German urban mobility planning. Our results point to the participation gap of professional stakeholders from the strategy development phases, which is rather kept at the decision-making level with input from researchers and consultants. Citizens are actively involved during the envisioning phases, but passively engaged after the implementation of measures. In this paper, we investigate how the operationalization of uncertainty in the model can be related to the disruption of social orders—societal pressures to adapt to ongoing environmental and technological change. First, we study the theoretical tradeoffs between three kinds of uncertainty as groups navigate external problems: validity (the predictability of the environment, including of other agents), coherence (the predictability of interpersonal affective dynamics), and dependence (the predictability of affective meanings). Second, we discuss how these uncertainty tradeoffs are related to contemporary political conflict and polarization in the context of societal transitions. To illustrate the potential of our model to analyze the socio-emotional consequences of uncertainty, we present a simulation of diverging individual affective meanings of occupational identities under uncertainty in a climate change mitigation scenario based on events in Germany. Data visualization has assumed a central role in environmental journalism and is often used in data stories to convey the dramatic consequences of climate change and other ecological crises. However, the emphasis on the catastrophic impacts of climate change tends to induce feelings of fear, anxiety, and apathy in readers. Climate mitigation, adaptation, and protection—all highly urgent in the face of the climate crisis—are at risk of being overlooked. These topics are more difficult to communicate as they are hard to convey on varying levels of locality, involve multiple interconnected sectors, and need to be mediated across various channels from the printed newspaper to social media platforms. So far, there has been little research on data visualization to enhance affective engagement with data about climate protection as part of solution-oriented reporting of climate change. With this research we characterize the unique challenges of constructive climate journalism for data visualization and share findings from a research and design study in collaboration with a national newspaper in Germany. Using the affordances and aesthetics of travel postcards, we present Klimakarten, a data journalism project on the progress of climate protection at multiple spatial scales (from national to local), across five key sectors (agriculture, buildings, energy, mobility, and waste), and for print and online use. Even though edges are the constitutive elements of networks, there have been only few attempts to visualize attributes of edges. In this work, we focus on the critical importance of edge attributes for interpreting network visualizations and building trust in the underlying data. We propose 'unfolding of edges' as an interactive approach to integrate multivariate edge attributes dynamically into existing node-link diagrams. Unfolding edges is an in-situ approach that gradually transforms basic links into detailed representations of the associated edge attributes. This approach extends focus+context, semantic zoom, and animated transitions for network visualizations to accommodate edge details on-demand without cluttering the overall graph layout. We explore the design space for the unfolding of edges, which covers aspects of making space for the unfolding, of actually representing the edge context, and of navigating between edges. To demonstrate the utility of our approach, we present two case studies in the context of historical network analysis and computational social science. For these, web-based prototypes were implemented based on which we conducted interviews with domain experts. In contrast, data-driven constitutive models couple the model structure and parameters. Addressing this fundamental difference, the development of constitutive models based on Physics-encoded Neural Networks (PeNN) is guided from the perspective of conventional model development, highlighting similarities and differences. The crucial physical information that influences PeNN is explained, and the incorporation of three key state boundary surfaces in pressure-porosity space - critical state, loosest state, and densest state - via physics-informed deep learning is detailed. Physics-informed calibration is performed using the augmented Lagrangian method; then, the calibrated models undergo extensive drained and undrained simulations. Results indicate that using only physical information from state boundary surfaces, without data within these boundaries, fails to calibrate data-driven models; thus, boundary surface information represents partial physical information. While combining partial physical information with reasonably distributed data can improve model development under limited experimental data, adding more partial physical information and data does not necessarily enhance the results. The finding aims to bridge the gap between conventional and data-driven constitutive models, hopefully increasing the reliability and interpretability of data-driven models. Auf der Grundlage eines ganzheitlichen Demokratiebegriffs entwickelt der Artikel Strategien für die pädagogische Praxis in der Arbeit mit den Kindern und für ein „kompetentes System“ der Kindertagesbetreuung. N2 - Experiencing democracy and making participation come alive for children are core goals in the pedagogical work in kindergarten. This article presents results from a qualitative study regarding whether and how children experience this and their perspectives on the culture of participation in their centers. It makes clear that, even in a participatory climate in the centre, children experience adults as powerful actors and perceive little room for contributing to decision-making. This article is based on a holistic concept of democracy and develops strategies for pedagogical practice in working with children and for creating a “competent system” in ECEC. The children themselves have only recently been identified as a resource to contribute to that discussion. Several studies have described profound methodologies to obtain children's perspectives by observing, interviewing and conducting group discussions. This article introduces research that combines exploring children's perspectives with sustained shared thinking (SST). Focussing on the dialogue following the rules of SST, we conducted and analysed group discussions with children about their lives within a children's centre in Berlin, Germany. The children were asked to think about aspects of quality. They expressed their ideas, wishes, likes and dislikes within the centre explicitly and profoundly. Following the lead of these children, a dialogue developed in which children and researchers contributed equally and led the way. This showed how well children could act out their agency and were capable of expressing rational and reasonable opinions. Here, we argue that SST helps to see the pedagogical side of exploring children's perspectives and acknowledges this as a pedagogical and political act. Children experience being heard and having a say in shaping situations. This is in itself a pedagogical situation a researcher should be aware of. Theoretically, interactivity is often described as the means to support analytical tasks, while in practice, it encompasses the techniques that alter visual representations. These notions are a useful starting point to study the role of interactivity in critical engagements with data visualizations. At the core of critical interactivity is the negotiation of authority and agency: authority as authors provide structure and context, and agency as viewers navigate and interpret the data on their own terms. This raises the critical question: who has the power to control the visualization? Drawing from four case studies in science communication, art history, anthropology, and climate advocacy, we examine how critical interactivity links exploration and narration. We reflect on the effort involved in preparing data and propose design strategies for implementing critical interactivity in data visualization. In this state-of-the-art report, we review and classify techniques that are inspired by the physical metaphor of un/folding to reveal relevant information or, conversely, to reduce irrelevant information in data visualizations. Similar to focus+context approaches, un/foldable visualizations transform the visual data representation, often between different granularities, in an integrated manner while preserving the overall context. This typically involves switching between different visibility states of data elements or adjusting the graphical abstraction linked by gradual display transitions. We analyze a literature corpus of 101 visualization techniques specifically with respect to their use of the un/folding metaphor. In particular, we consider the type of data, the focus scope and the effect scope, the number of un/folding states, the transformation type, and the controllability and interaction directness of un/folding. The collection of un/foldables is available as an online catalog that includes classic focus+context, semantic zooming, and multi-scale visualizations as well as contemporary un/foldable visualizations. By employing post-hoc explanation methods like SHAP, the system offers clear insights into model predictions by analyzing feature contributions after training, which helps users better understand AI-driven outcomes. Designed with a user-centered approach, the platform promotes trust and usability through transparent predictions, interactive geovisualizations, and local explanations, allowing users to navigate spatial data intuitively by exploring overviews, focusing on specific regions, and accessing detailed insights on demand. This study investigates the entrepreneurial intentions (EI) of university students and graduates from the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam from a gender-specific perspective, with the central aim of identifying the reasons for the continuing differences in EIs between men and women. The theoretical framework is based on the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), which was extended in this study by the construct of entrepreneurial self-identity to gain a more comprehensive understanding of EI. Using structural equation modeling, an analysis was conducted for the entire cohort as well as stratified by gender, examining how attitude, social norms, perceived behavioral control, and entrepreneurial self-identity influence EI. The results of the online survey, in which 414 students and graduates participated between June 2nd and July 14th, 2023, show that men exhibit significantly higher EIs than women. Furthermore, it was demonstrated that risk-taking propensity contributes to these gender differences. Moreover, perceived behavioral control and parental role models proved to be crucial determinants for the EIs of women, while these factors did not significantly relate to the intentions of men. The analysis underscores the complexity of gender differences in EIs and implies that considering gender-specific factors in targeted support measures for universities can help reduce gender differences and thus better leverage the entrepreneurial potential of women. As such, understanding the degree to which commercially-available generative language models (LLMs) replicate human judgements of affective connotations may help better understand human-model interactions. LLMs may also serve as useful tools for researchers seeking affective meaning estimates. We test the ability of three LLMs – GPT-4o, Mistral Large, and Llama 3.1 – to estimate human affective connotation ratings of words representing social identities, behaviours, modifiers, and settings in three language cultures: English (US), French (France), and German (Germany). We find that LLM ratings of terms correlate strongly with human ratings. However, their ratings tend to be overly extreme and patterns of correlations between meaning dimensions only loosely approximate those of human ratings. Consistent with previous findings of English-language and American biases in LLMs, we find that LLMs tend to perform better on English terms, though this pattern varies somewhat by meaning dimension and the type of term in question. We explore how LLMs might contribute to scholarship on affective connotations – by acting as tools for measurement – and how scholarship on affective connotations might contribute to generative language models – by guiding exploration of model biases. We link the microstructure evolution within the granular assembly to its macroscopic cyclic response. To capture the mechanical response of our reference material (Karlsruhe fine sand), a rolling resistance linear contact model along with spherical particles is calibrated through a trial-and-error process, adjusting the model parameters to capture the experimentally observed behavior as close as possible. A series of cyclic undrained triaxial tests were simulated to investigate the micromechanical processes underlying liquefaction of sand under cyclic shearing. We analyzed the evolution of various fabric indices, including the redundancy index, contact normal orientations, and fabric anisotropy in relation to the pre- and post-liquefaction responses. The results reveal that a redundancy index below unity provides a unified criterion for the loss of the isostatic condition within the granular assembly, which triggers the onset of liquefaction. Throughout the cyclic loading process, sliding-dominant contact-yielding mechanisms remain prevalent. Additionally, significant changes in contact normal orientation and increasing fabric anisotropy dependent on the induced axial strain occur as the sample undergoes post-liquefaction deformation. The present study therefore aims to systematically examine the underlying motives and associations with psychological distress. Method This mixed-methods longitudinal study includes two waves of anonymous online data collection (11/2022–01/2023; 11/2023–01/2024) in Germany. The adult sample (Nbaseline = 2196; with nfollow-up = 240) was recruited via convenience-sampling, primarily from Berlin’s nightlife-scene, and comprises GHB/GBL/BD users and their non-using peers. Structured motive ratings and open-ended self-reported motives were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. Cross-lagged panel-models were used to test bidirectional longitudinal associations between GHB/GBL/BD use and anxiety and depressive symptoms, while moderation analyses were used to assess whether coping motives influenced these relationships. Results GHB/GBL/BD use was primarily driven by hedonistic motives such as euphoria and sexual stimulation, while coping-related motives (e.g. anxiety reduction, mood improvement) were also endorsed, particularly among heavy users. Motives remained largely stable over time. Anxiety and depressive symptoms did not predict later use, nor vice versa. However, coping motives moderated the relationship, strengthening the association between symptoms and use frequency. Conclusions While GHB/GBL/BD are mainly used for recreational hedonistic purposes, distress-related motives also seem to play a role, especially in heavier use. These findings highlight the need for targeted prevention, harm-reduction, and therapeutic strategies that consider both hedonistic and coping-driven use, while accounting for the unique characteristics and risks associated with GHB/GBL/BD. Applying LCA to determine the environmental impact of entire settlements is less established and the structural infrastructure is often not taken into account. The research project ‘Q-LCA - Analysis of the ecological impacts of different settlement types in new urban development projects over their life cycle’ follows the objective of determining and comparing the material flows, energy consumption including grey energy and the associated emissions of urban settlement components with a focus on global warming potential (GWP). Based on a modular approach, the GWP for 972 different settlement scenarios was determined through an LCA-based model in which six key parameters - building type, settlement density, road layout, building construction method, energy efficiency level and heating system - were systematically combined. The study demonstrates how modularity enables the assessment of large-scale systems such as urban settlements, contributing to an enhanced reflection of their inherent heterogeneity. Besides quantifying the infrastructure share of settlements’ GWP, further results indicate a high influence of operational energy consumption as well as choice of construction method on the area-based GWP. Underground garages are moreover responsible for high GWPs in densified settlements with large building types. This research fills a critical gap in existing literature by emphasising the potential of modular LCA approaches to assess urban development and additionally provides valuable insights for urban planners as well as policy makers seeking to lower environmental impact, identify circularity potentials and mitigate climate change effects in settlements. However, intervention studies allowing for a causal interpretation of this association are largely missing. Aims Therefore, we aimed at investigating the effects of training children's spatial language skills on the development of basic numerical skills. Sample The intervention group comprised n = 54 and the non-trained control group n = 72 4-6-year-old children (Mage = 60.58 months). Methods In a pre-post-test control group design small groups of four to eight children were trained six times (mostly twice a week) for about 20 min each. The training focused on production and comprehension of the spatial terms in front of, behind, to the left, and to the right with effects on numerical magnitude understanding and verbal number skills being evaluated. Results Comparing training and control group on performance gains between pre- and post-test revealed significantly higher gains for the intervention group in spatial language production and comprehension as well as numerical magnitude understanding, but not verbal number skills. Conclusion These findings provide first evidence for a causal link between children's spatial language skills and the development of their numerical magnitude understanding. This highlights the relevance of mastering specific spatial language terms for children's early numerical development.
