Compared to the various possibilities for visual and interactive properties of nodes, there are few techniques for interactive visualization of multivariate edge attributes in node-link diagrams. Visualization of edge attributes is oftentimes limited by occlusion and space issues of methods that globally encode attributes in a node-link diagram for all edges, not sufficiently exploiting the potential of interaction. Building up on existing techniques for edge encoding and interaction, we propose 'Unfolding Edges' as an exemplary use of an on-demand detail enhancing approach for exploration of multivariate edge attributes. Inspired by existing efforts in critical cartography, we show how people share personal memories in a visualization of COVID-19 data and how comments by other visualization readers influence the reading and understanding of visualizations. Analyzing interaction logs, reader surveys, visualization annotations, and interviews, we find that reader annotations help other viewers relate to other people's stories and reflect on their own experiences. Further, we found that annotations embedded directly into the visualization can serve as social traces guiding through a visualization and help readers contextualize their own stories. With that, they supersede the attention paid to data encodings and become the main focal point of the visualization. Data stories are a genre of long-form journalism that integrate text, data visualization, and other visual expressions (e.g., photographs, illustrations, videos) for the purpose of data-driven storytelling. In the last decade, a considerable number of data stories about a wide range of topics have been published worldwide. Authors use a variety of techniques to make complex phenomena comprehensible and use visualizations as communicative devices that shape the understanding of a given topic. Despite the popularity of data stories, we, as scholars, still lack a methodological framework for assessing the communicative role of visualizations in data stories. To this extent, we draw from data journalism, visual culture, and multimodality studies to propose an interpretative framework in six stages. The process begins with the analysis of content blocks and framing elements and ends with the identification of dimensions, patterns, and relationships between textual and visual elements. The framework is put to the test by analyzing 17 data stories about water-related issues. Our observations from the survey illustrate how data visualizations can shape the framing of complex topics. Theoretically, interactivity is often described as the means to support analytical tasks, while in practice, it encompasses the techniques that alter visual representations. These notions are a useful starting point to study the role of interactivity in critical engagements with data visualizations. At the core of critical interactivity is the negotiation of authority and agency: authority as authors provide structure and context, and agency as viewers navigate and interpret the data on their own terms. This raises the critical question: who has the power to control the visualization? Drawing from four case studies in science communication, art history, anthropology, and climate advocacy, we examine how critical interactivity links exploration and narration. The UDV card deck was developed to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practice in workshop settings, fostering inclusive and reflective approaches to visualization design. Drawing from urban visualization design literature and the results from a series of expert workshops, these cards summarize key considerations when designing urban data visualizations. The card deck guides different activities in an engaging, collaborative, and structured format, promoting inclusion of diverse urban actors. We introduce the card deck and its goals, demonstrate its use in four case studies, and discuss our findings. Feedback from workshop participants indicates that the UDV card deck can serve as a supportive and reflective tool for urban data visualization researchers, designers and practitioners. In this state-of-the-art report, we review and classify techniques that are inspired by the physical metaphor of un/folding to reveal relevant information or, conversely, to reduce irrelevant information in data visualizations. Similar to focus+context approaches, un/foldable visualizations transform the visual data representation, often between different granularities, in an integrated manner while preserving the overall context. This typically involves switching between different visibility states of data elements or adjusting the graphical abstraction linked by gradual display transitions. We analyze a literature corpus of 101 visualization techniques specifically with respect to their use of the un/folding metaphor. In particular, we consider the type of data, the focus scope and the effect scope, the number of un/folding states, the transformation type, and the controllability and interaction directness of un/folding. The collection of un/foldables is available as an online catalog that includes classic focus+context, semantic zooming, and multi-scale visualizations as well as contemporary un/foldable visualizations. From our literature analysis, we further extract families of un/folding techniques, summarize empirical findings to date, and identify promising research directions for un/foldable data visualization. Aiming to narrow the gap between data analysis and story authoring, inflections are subtle modulations of a visualization's graphical attributes that guide attention, highlight important patterns, and embed communicative cues. By parameterizing view changes and annotations in visualizations, authors can embed insights from their data analysis into story segments and connect them with the respective visualization states. This paper presents the general concept and a technical architecture supporting inflectable data visualizations. By leveraging native web technologies and established visualization conventions, we propose a flexible and extensible approach to inflecting visualizations that link exploratory data analysis and data-driven storytelling.
