The project is part of the exhibition organized by metaLAB (at) Harvard entitled Curatorial A(i)gents and explores the limits of artificial intelligence to display a large set of images and create surprise among visitors. To achieve this feeling of surprise, a choreographic interface was designed to connect the audience’s movement with several unique views of the collection. While there is an increased awareness of power structures in data science, computing, and design, there is little design research to confront these. This work explores the potential of disclosing context information of data stories, i.e., digital storytelling formats utilizing data visualizations, to enable critical-feminist readings of and reflections on these stories. Drawing from a growing body of feminist scholarship in human-computer interaction, data science, and beyond, we identify key aspects and forms of disclosure for embedding them into visual data story interfaces. We devise and validate these aspects and forms within a case study: a Web-based scrollytelling article explaining the feminist concept of intersectionality using a combination of animated illustration, data visualization, and text. With this work, we demonstrate and discuss the potentials and pitfalls of disclosure practices in data storytelling. While VR-based therapeutic interventions are increasingly well-established, the application of VR in the field of mental health awareness represents a novel and promising development. We present our mental health awareness VR application “hopohopo”, in which the user takes the perspective of a person suffering from social anxiety. Through the VR journey, the user experiences what it could feel like to suffer from constant fear of being negatively judged by others in everyday social situations. The aim of the application is to allow nonaffected users to expand their knowledge and to raise mental health awareness. Compared to the various possibilities for visual and interactive properties of nodes, there are few techniques for interactive visualization of multivariate edge attributes in node-link diagrams. Visualization of edge attributes is oftentimes limited by occlusion and space issues of methods that globally encode attributes in a node-link diagram for all edges, not sufficiently exploiting the potential of interaction. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb" (GB/US 1964) sowie "Er ist wieder da" (DE 2014/15). Analyzing interaction logs, reader surveys, visualization annotations, and interviews, we find that reader annotations help other viewers relate to other people's stories and reflect on their own experiences. Further, we found that annotations embedded directly into the visualization can serve as social traces guiding through a visualization and help readers contextualize their own stories. Data stories are a genre of long-form journalism that integrate text, data visualization, and other visual expressions (e.g., photographs, illustrations, videos) for the purpose of data-driven storytelling. In the last decade, a considerable number of data stories about a wide range of topics have been published worldwide. Authors use a variety of techniques to make complex phenomena comprehensible and use visualizations as communicative devices that shape the understanding of a given topic. Despite the popularity of data stories, we, as scholars, still lack a methodological framework for assessing the communicative role of visualizations in data stories. To this extent, we draw from data journalism, visual culture, and multimodality studies to propose an interpretative framework in six stages. The process begins with the analysis of content blocks and framing elements and ends with the identification of dimensions, patterns, and relationships between textual and visual elements. The framework is put to the test by analyzing 17 data stories about water-related issues. Our observations from the survey illustrate how data visualizations can shape the framing of complex topics. Theoretically, interactivity is often described as the means to support analytical tasks, while in practice, it encompasses the techniques that alter visual representations. These notions are a useful starting point to study the role of interactivity in critical engagements with data visualizations. At the core of critical interactivity is the negotiation of authority and agency: authority as authors provide structure and context, and agency as viewers navigate and interpret the data on their own terms. This raises the critical question: who has the power to control the visualization? Drawing from four case studies in science communication, art history, anthropology, and climate advocacy, we examine how critical interactivity links exploration and narration. We reflect on the effort involved in preparing data and propose design strategies for implementing critical interactivity in data visualization. Drawing from urban visualization design literature and the results from a series of expert workshops, these cards summarize key considerations when designing urban data visualizations. The card deck guides different activities in an engaging, collaborative, and structured format, promoting inclusion of diverse urban actors. We found common themes across computational and human uses of time, including the quantification and calculation of time as a finite resource; the imbalance of clock time versus “event time” and linear versus cyclical time; the perception and reality of the acceleration and fragmentation of time; and an approach to programmability, which is applied to time, people, and the world as a whole. In this state-of-the-art report, we review and classify techniques that are inspired by the physical metaphor of un/folding to reveal relevant information or, conversely, to reduce irrelevant information in data visualizations. Similar to focus+context approaches, un/foldable visualizations transform the visual data representation, often between different granularities, in an integrated manner while preserving the overall context. This typically involves switching between different visibility states of data elements or adjusting the graphical abstraction linked by gradual display transitions. We analyze a literature corpus of 101 visualization techniques specifically with respect to their use of the un/folding metaphor. In particular, we consider the type of data, the focus scope and the effect scope, the number of un/folding states, the transformation type, and the controllability and interaction directness of un/folding. The collection of un/foldables is available as an online catalog that includes classic focus+context, semantic zooming, and multi-scale visualizations as well as contemporary un/foldable visualizations. From our literature analysis, we further extract families of un/folding techniques, summarize empirical findings to date, and identify promising research directions for un/foldable data visualization. By addressing limitations in traditional GeoXAI tools, such as the lack of geographical context for model predictions and local explanation, this system integrates state-of-the-art XAI methods with open-source geospatial technologies. Applied to the wildfire-prone regions of Berlin and Brandenburg, Germany, the system combines environmental, topographic, and meteorological features derived from high-resolution geospatial data for training a Random Forest (RF) model. The web-based GeoXAI system enables interactive exploration of the model output and its features, allowing users to visualize wildfire susceptibility, examine feature contributions, and correlate predictions with spatial patterns through post-hoc interpretability. By employing post-hoc explanation methods like SHAP, the system offers clear insights into model predictions by analyzing feature contributions after training, which helps users better understand AI-driven outcomes. Designed with a user-centered approach, the platform promotes trust and usability through transparent predictions, interactive geovisualizations, and local explanations, allowing users to navigate spatial data intuitively by exploring overviews, focusing on specific regions, and accessing detailed insights on demand. This work highlights the potential of combining GeoXAI with machine learning to improve decision-making in wildfire prevention and management. The robot was intentionally designed not to offer suggestions or solutions, distinguishing it from typical generative AI tools. Instead, it engaged students using metaphors, open-ended questions, and active listening. The aim was to examine how participants responded to a system that deliberately resisted the generative behavior commonly associated with tools like ChatGPT. Many participants appreciated the robot’s reflective role, noting that it helped them clarify and structure ideas without imposing direction. However, as the design process progressed, some expressed frustration and a desire for more proactive input—ranging from creative suggestions and emotional feedback to auditory elements, such as singing or whistling a melody. This mismatch between the robot’s expressive embodiment and its intentionally limited functionality led to moments of tension. Rather than viewing this as a shortcoming, we frame it as a deliberate design strategy: by withholding generative output, the robot fosters independent ideation. These findings contribute to broader discussions in human-robot interaction, particularly concerning creativity, user expectations, and the design of non-directive AI systems. This paper proposes a speculative vocabulary that describes possible characteristics of phygital spaces, an emerging development where the physical and the digital increasingly merge and fundamentally form human perception of reality. The emergence of phygital spaces is driven by dominant digital-economic worldviews that get projected into the future. This might reinforce already problematic circumstances as well as create completely new issues. The paper explores how this could manifest in certain characteristics through the proposition of speculative terms. The terms attempt to describe possible changes in human-world relationships that affect existence, meaning and behavior. Among other things, this includes changes such as the curation of a person's view of the world by personalization algorithms, the enhancement of a person's understanding of the world through algorithmic pre-interpretation or the organization of social systems through synchronized individual action recommendations. Futures within which these reality-forming characteristics would exist need to be explored, discussed, shaped and possibly prevented. Language is thereby a tool to enable new conversations and organize actions across a wide range of people. Just as many analytical concepts supported the understanding of existing conditions, this vocabulary tries to support the understanding of possible conditions, enable holistic implication assessments and shifts in worldview beyond current digital-economic paradigms. Yet existing regulatory frameworks - Privacy by design and Human Rights by design - focus narrowly on data protection and overlook the relational and collective dynamics these technologies disrupt. This article introduces the ‘ethics of interactions’ as a complementary framework that situates regulation within the lived realities of AI-mediated environments. Our interdisciplinary team, combining law, speculative design, and human–computer interaction, developed a year-long methodology spanning speculative storytelling, legal mapping, field diaries, and role-play based workshops in Germany and Israel. These exercises revealed how smart glasses might reshape trust, consent and perception, through five recurring modes of interaction: person-to-person, person-to-space, person-to-reality, person-to-machine, and person-to-platform. Workshop role-play surfaced vulnerabilities that conventional legal analysis misses, from peer-to-peer surveillance and emotional inference to corporate, platform and government control of augmented realities. Building on these findings, we propose regulatory recommendations that combine dual governance models, interaction-sensitive safeguards, and investment in digital literacy for policymakers. By embedding speculative inquiry into policy design, this study closes the loop between abstract principles and lived dilemmas, offering both conceptual and practical pathways for governing phygital spaces. This approach emphasizes the diverse dimensions that can shape these sustainable futures and aims to cultivate creative thinking in response to current and anticipated challenges. In this context, the chapter introduces the pedagogical methodology of Xtopias, which serves as a vehicle for creative thought through “future visioning exercises.” The specific Xtopia explored in detail in this chapter revolves around the concept of the “end of human dominance.” Architecture and urban design students utilized this concept to envision sustainable future scenarios and facilitate public engagement in discussions surrounding these potential futures. Taking inspiration from the R.E.M. song “It's the End of the World as We Know It,” this Xtopia encouraged reflection on the potential end of an era and posed the question to students: “How could the world look if humans lived in greater symbiosis with other creatures?” As a means of fostering creative visions of a sustainable future, this methodology welcomes serious, humorous, and experimental speculations on urban projects from students. It aims to train the human mind to think creatively about the effects, consequences, and responses to climate change. Moreover, the project specifically discussed here involved the creation of public exhibitions described as interactive stations, which aimed to engage the public in the creative thought process. This methodology is viewed as an interdisciplinary example of transformative learning that explores the relationship between humans and nature. It encompasses a range of complementary activities, including interactive presentations, self-knowledge exercises, group brainstorming, and excursions. By describing the Xtopia methodology, the chapter presents another instance of creative pedagogical responses to the challenge of teaching and engaging students with the climate issues they will confront as future professionals. Building on Allan Sekula’s notion of the instrumental image developed in light of aerial composite photographs taken during World War I, we propose to speak of instrumental data to describe operative platforms fusing data from satellites, social media, and local sensors and using them for divergent political ends, most notably the control of borders and the quality of water, air, and crops in Europe. Taking the EU-funded pilot project CALLISTO as a case study, we combine media-theoretical analysis, artistic research, and critical data visualization to address the nexus of visualization, decision making, and control effected by the ways in which the platform promises to make satellite data operable, ultimately fusing not just data but also the corresponding social fields of climate and migration. Aiming to narrow the gap between data analysis and story authoring, inflections are subtle modulations of a visualization's graphical attributes that guide attention, highlight important patterns, and embed communicative cues. By parameterizing view changes and annotations in visualizations, authors can embed insights from their data analysis into story segments and connect them with the respective visualization states. This paper presents the general concept and a technical architecture supporting inflectable data visualizations. By leveraging native web technologies and established visualization conventions, we propose a flexible and extensible approach to inflecting visualizations that link exploratory data analysis and data-driven storytelling. As a visual interface for scholarly reading and writing, Textarium combines human analysis with lightweight computational processing to bridge close and distant reading practices. Readers can highlight text, group keywords into concepts, and embed these observations as anchors in essays. The interface renders these interpretive actions as parameterized visualization states. Through a speculative design process of co-creative and iterative prototyping, we developed a reading-writing approach that makes interpretive processes transparent and shareable within digital narratives. The volume Nomadic Camera investigates the technical, medial and aesthetic relationship between photography and displacement in historical and contemporary perspectives. The contributing authors adopt the term ‘nomadic’ – signifying a transitory form of existence – to explore photography beyond static concepts of being and national boundaries. Viewing photography as a formative part of this history of mobility and migration, the book explores the interplay between the concepts of the ‘nomadic’ and the ‘camera’, offering new perspectives on photography as a medium on the move. The interdisciplinary contributions approach this topic from various angles. They examine photographic tools and technologies; investigate the role of bodies, agents, and performative acts in photographic practices; explore how photography constructs and conveys narratives of movement; and address issues of image circulation, archiving, and memory.
