In his map 'La nuova topografia di Roma Comasco', he mapped publicly accessible interior and exterior spaces of Rome with an impressively high level of detail as a figure-ground map. Since Nolli’s time, both the character and diversity of public spaces as well as cartographic technology have changed. This research project aims to adapt some ideas behind Nolli’s map for today’s circumstances on the basis of open data, and seeks to develop methods for processing volunteered geographical information from OpenStreetMap (OSM) to identify, categorize, and map public spaces based on thematic and geometric information. Even though edges are the constitutive elements of networks, there have been only few attempts to visualize attributes of edges. In this work, we focus on the critical importance of edge attributes for interpreting network visualizations and building trust in the underlying data. We propose 'unfolding of edges' as an interactive approach to integrate multivariate edge attributes dynamically into existing node-link diagrams. Unfolding edges is an in-situ approach that gradually transforms basic links into detailed representations of the associated edge attributes. This approach extends focus+context, semantic zoom, and animated transitions for network visualizations to accommodate edge details on-demand without cluttering the overall graph layout. We explore the design space for the unfolding of edges, which covers aspects of making space for the unfolding, of actually representing the edge context, and of navigating between edges. To demonstrate the utility of our approach, we present two case studies in the context of historical network analysis and computational social science. For these, web-based prototypes were implemented based on which we conducted interviews with domain experts. The experts' feedback suggests that the proposed unfolding of edges is a useful tool for exploring rich edge information of multivariate graphs. Inspired by existing efforts in critical cartography, we show how people share personal memories in a visualization of COVID-19 data and how comments by other visualization readers influence the reading and understanding of visualizations. Analyzing interaction logs, reader surveys, visualization annotations, and interviews, we find that reader annotations help other viewers relate to other people's stories and reflect on their own experiences. Further, we found that annotations embedded directly into the visualization can serve as social traces guiding through a visualization and help readers contextualize their own stories. With that, they supersede the attention paid to data encodings and become the main focal point of the visualization. These notions are a useful starting point to study the role of interactivity in critical engagements with data visualizations. At the core of critical interactivity is the negotiation of authority and agency: authority as authors provide structure and context, and agency as viewers navigate and interpret the data on their own terms. This raises the critical question: who has the power to control the visualization? Drawing from four case studies in science communication, art history, anthropology, and climate advocacy, we examine how critical interactivity links exploration and narration. The UDV card deck was developed to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practice in workshop settings, fostering inclusive and reflective approaches to visualization design. Drawing from urban visualization design literature and the results from a series of expert workshops, these cards summarize key considerations when designing urban data visualizations. The card deck guides different activities in an engaging, collaborative, and structured format, promoting inclusion of diverse urban actors. We introduce the card deck and its goals, demonstrate its use in four case studies, and discuss our findings. Feedback from workshop participants indicates that the UDV card deck can serve as a supportive and reflective tool for urban data visualization researchers, designers and practitioners. We found common themes across computational and human uses of time, including the quantification and calculation of time as a finite resource; the imbalance of clock time versus “event time” and linear versus cyclical time; the perception and reality of the acceleration and fragmentation of time; and an approach to programmability, which is applied to time, people, and the world as a whole. We show how these cultural assumptions become embedded into digital devices. This article introduces PaSyMo (Participatory Systems Modeling), a gamified communication support system designed to assist urban planners in communicative and deliberative planning. PaSyMo integrates three conceptual pillars that guided its design: stakeholder engagement, participatory agent‐based modeling (ABM), and visualization on tangible interfaces. The system combines a simulation environment grounded in geodata and ABM with discursive elements from scenario workshops and role‐playing games, bridging digital and non‐digital formats. PaSyMo contributes to the growing field of GAM research (Games and Agent‐based Modeling; Szczepanska et al., 2022) by providing a framework that explores the integration of gaming mechanics with urban simulation tools, highlighting their potential to support sustainable urban planning. The approach draws from participatory modeling (Sterling et al., 2019; Voinov & Bousquet, 2010) while leveraging state‐of‐the‐art geospatial simulation and interactive interfaces to facilitate communication and co‐production of knowledge among diverse stakeholders. Exploratory findings suggest that combining gaming experience with geospatial data visualization and ABM offers a promising approach to communicate the potential implications and trade‐offs of urban planning initiatives. This integration enhances stakeholder engagement, promotes shared understanding, and supports consensus building. By making urban planning processes more interactive, PaSyMo can extend the impact of planning research beyond academic settings. Preliminary insights indicate that PaSyMo can enhance stakeholder understanding, knowledge integration, consensus‐building, and proactive planning, especially in contexts of decision‐making in complex and uncertain situations; however, these findings need to be substantiated in future studies. The robot was intentionally designed not to offer suggestions or solutions, distinguishing it from typical generative AI tools. Instead, it engaged students using metaphors, open-ended questions, and active listening. The aim was to examine how participants responded to a system that deliberately resisted the generative behavior commonly associated with tools like ChatGPT. Many participants appreciated the robot’s reflective role, noting that it helped them clarify and structure ideas without imposing direction. However, as the design process progressed, some expressed frustration and a desire for more proactive input—ranging from creative suggestions and emotional feedback to auditory elements, such as singing or whistling a melody. This mismatch between the robot’s expressive embodiment and its intentionally limited functionality led to moments of tension. Rather than viewing this as a shortcoming, we frame it as a deliberate design strategy: by withholding generative output, the robot fosters independent ideation. These findings contribute to broader discussions in human-robot interaction, particularly concerning creativity, user expectations, and the design of non-directive AI systems. This paper proposes a speculative vocabulary that describes possible characteristics of phygital spaces, an emerging development where the physical and the digital increasingly merge and fundamentally form human perception of reality. The emergence of phygital spaces is driven by dominant digital-economic worldviews that get projected into the future. This might reinforce already problematic circumstances as well as create completely new issues. The paper explores how this could manifest in certain characteristics through the proposition of speculative terms. The terms attempt to describe possible changes in human-world relationships that affect existence, meaning and behavior. Among other things, this includes changes such as the curation of a person's view of the world by personalization algorithms, the enhancement of a person's understanding of the world through algorithmic pre-interpretation or the organization of social systems through synchronized individual action recommendations. Futures within which these reality-forming characteristics would exist need to be explored, discussed, shaped and possibly prevented. Language is thereby a tool to enable new conversations and organize actions across a wide range of people. Just as many analytical concepts supported the understanding of existing conditions, this vocabulary tries to support the understanding of possible conditions, enable holistic implication assessments and shifts in worldview beyond current digital-economic paradigms. Yet existing regulatory frameworks - Privacy by design and Human Rights by design - focus narrowly on data protection and overlook the relational and collective dynamics these technologies disrupt. This article introduces the ‘ethics of interactions’ as a complementary framework that situates regulation within the lived realities of AI-mediated environments. Our interdisciplinary team, combining law, speculative design, and human–computer interaction, developed a year-long methodology spanning speculative storytelling, legal mapping, field diaries, and role-play based workshops in Germany and Israel. These exercises revealed how smart glasses might reshape trust, consent and perception, through five recurring modes of interaction: person-to-person, person-to-space, person-to-reality, person-to-machine, and person-to-platform. Workshop role-play surfaced vulnerabilities that conventional legal analysis misses, from peer-to-peer surveillance and emotional inference to corporate, platform and government control of augmented realities. Building on these findings, we propose regulatory recommendations that combine dual governance models, interaction-sensitive safeguards, and investment in digital literacy for policymakers. By embedding speculative inquiry into policy design, this study closes the loop between abstract principles and lived dilemmas, offering both conceptual and practical pathways for governing phygital spaces. This approach emphasizes the diverse dimensions that can shape these sustainable futures and aims to cultivate creative thinking in response to current and anticipated challenges. In this context, the chapter introduces the pedagogical methodology of Xtopias, which serves as a vehicle for creative thought through “future visioning exercises.” The specific Xtopia explored in detail in this chapter revolves around the concept of the “end of human dominance.” Architecture and urban design students utilized this concept to envision sustainable future scenarios and facilitate public engagement in discussions surrounding these potential futures. Taking inspiration from the R.E.M. song “It's the End of the World as We Know It,” this Xtopia encouraged reflection on the potential end of an era and posed the question to students: “How could the world look if humans lived in greater symbiosis with other creatures?” As a means of fostering creative visions of a sustainable future, this methodology welcomes serious, humorous, and experimental speculations on urban projects from students. It aims to train the human mind to think creatively about the effects, consequences, and responses to climate change. Moreover, the project specifically discussed here involved the creation of public exhibitions described as interactive stations, which aimed to engage the public in the creative thought process. This methodology is viewed as an interdisciplinary example of transformative learning that explores the relationship between humans and nature. It encompasses a range of complementary activities, including interactive presentations, self-knowledge exercises, group brainstorming, and excursions. By describing the Xtopia methodology, the chapter presents another instance of creative pedagogical responses to the challenge of teaching and engaging students with the climate issues they will confront as future professionals. Aiming to narrow the gap between data analysis and story authoring, inflections are subtle modulations of a visualization's graphical attributes that guide attention, highlight important patterns, and embed communicative cues. By parameterizing view changes and annotations in visualizations, authors can embed insights from their data analysis into story segments and connect them with the respective visualization states. This paper presents the general concept and a technical architecture supporting inflectable data visualizations. By leveraging native web technologies and established visualization conventions, we propose a flexible and extensible approach to inflecting visualizations that link exploratory data analysis and data-driven storytelling.
