The children themselves have only recently been identified as a resource to contribute to that discussion. Several studies have described profound methodologies to obtain children's perspectives by observing, interviewing and conducting group discussions. This article introduces research that combines exploring children's perspectives with sustained shared thinking (SST). Focussing on the dialogue following the rules of SST, we conducted and analysed group discussions with children about their lives within a children's centre in Berlin, Germany. The children were asked to think about aspects of quality. They expressed their ideas, wishes, likes and dislikes within the centre explicitly and profoundly. Following the lead of these children, a dialogue developed in which children and researchers contributed equally and led the way. This showed how well children could act out their agency and were capable of expressing rational and reasonable opinions. Here, we argue that SST helps to see the pedagogical side of exploring children's perspectives and acknowledges this as a pedagogical and political act. This substitution aspect of demonstratives poses additional difficulties for learning demonstratives, because it requires recognizing that two speakers have to refer to the same thing with different words, and might be one reason for the reportedly protracted acquisition of demonstratives. In an online study conducted in German, it was investigated whether children in the estimated upper age range of demonstrative acquisition (5 to 7 years) understand demonstratives' substitution aspect with familiar ("dies"/"das") and novel ("schmi"/"schmu") demonstratives, and whether they understand novel words ("schmi"/"schmu") when used non-demonstratively as labels (N = 73; between-subject). Children's accuracy was compared with adult performance (N = 74). The study shows that children between 5 and 7 years of age perform less accurately than adults in all conditions. While adults' performance was highly accurate in all conditions (between 75\% and 92\% correct), children performed below chance in both demonstrative conditions and above chance in the labeling condition. This suggests that children do not understand demonstratives in the presented setup. To achieve this, we conducted an online study with a large sample of social work students (N = 875). The results revealed that ChatGPT has been widely adopted, with 80\% of social work students reporting its use for study-related tasks. However, the frequency of use was moderate. Thus, although students experiment with ChatGPT, they do not use it very frequently for their studies. Its primary applications include clarifying questions, explaining concepts, analysing, editing, and writing texts, as well as conducting literature reviews. The frequency of ChatGPT use was primarily predicted by its perceived usefulness, followed by perceived ease of use. Interestingly, affinity for technological interaction did not emerge as a significant predictor. Based on Tugendhat's ideas on the relation between singular terms and object reference, we argue that spatial indexicals comprise the fundamental means of object individuation and describe how feature thinkers might acquire the complex substitutional system of spatial indexicals. The model of Affect Control Theory (ACT; Heise, 1979, 2007) predicts and quantifies the degree to which social interactions deflect from prevailing social norms and values - based on the affective meanings of involved concepts. We tested whether this model can predict the amplitude of brain waves traditionally associated with semantic processing. To this end, we visually presented sentences describing basic subject-verb-object social interactions and measured event-related potentials for final words of sentences from three different conditions of affective deflection (low, medium, high) as computed by a variant of the ACT model (Schr{\"o}der, 2011). Sentence stimuli were closely controlled across conditions for alternate semantic dimensions such as contextual constraints, cloze probabilities, co-occurrences of subject-object and verb-object relations. Personality characteristics (schizotypy, Big Five) were assessed to account for individual differences, assumed to influence emotion-language interactions in information processing. Affective deflection provoked increased negativity of ERP waves during the P2/N2 and N400 components. Our data suggest that affective incoherence is perceived as conflicting information interfering with early semantic processing and that increased respective processing demands - in particular in the case of medium violations of social norms - linger on until the N400 time window classically associated with the integration of concepts into embedding context. Meaning, according to ACT, derives from cultural institutions and situational affordances, having denotative (declarative) as well as connotative (affective) properties. Mathematical formalizations of ACT allow predictions of affective incongruency (in the terminology of ACT, deflection), which arises from conflicting institutional and situational meanings in a given interaction context. Although ACT is theoretically consistent, its propositions regarding cognitive and affective processing have rarely been tested. The present study fills this gap by investigating the neural processing of affective incongruency in linguistic descriptions of social interactions. Following a neurosociological paradigm, the study draws on neurocognitive evidence on the effects of words' affective content on word processing as well as on a previous electroencephalography study that investigated processing of affective incongruency using event-related brain potentials. We hypothesized that affective incongruency is associated with activation in the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), a brain area known for conflict processing. To test this hypothesis, we replicated the electroencephalography study using functional magnetic resonance imaging: We visually presented sentences describing social interactions to 23 participants in a silent reading task while measuring differences in the hemodynamic response in two conditions of affective congruency. Results show expected increases in neural activity for affectively incongruent sentences in the left ACC, supporting the assumption that affective language content influences meaning-making at very early semantic processing stages. The results also add to the emerging neuroscientific evidence for ACT's mathematical model of impression formation.}, subject = {Funktionelle Kernspintomografie}, language = {en} } @article{SchoenfeldLonnemannWalterLaageretal., author = {Sch{\"o}nfeld, Romy and Lonnemann, Jan and Walter-Laager, Catherine and Hildebrandt, Frauke}, title = {Partizipatives Handeln von Fachkr{\"a}ften mit Krippenkindern in Essenssituationen}, series = {Fr{\"u}he Bildung}, journal = {Fr{\"u}he Bildung}, publisher = {Hogrefe Verlag}, address = {G{\"o}ttingen}, issn = {2191-9186}, doi = {10.1026/2191-9186/a000700}, pages = {9}, abstract = {Als eine wesentliche Aufgabe p{\"a}dagogischer Fachkr{\"a}fte in der Kindertagesbetreuung gilt die rechtlich verankerte Beteiligung von Kindern in allt{\"a}glichen Angelegenheiten wie in Essenssituationen. While previous cross-linguistic studies have typically addressed these aspects in isolation, this paper explicitly investigates both processes simultaneously, assessing language-specific and perceptual factors contributing to lexical acquisition. Using previously collected Japanese data (re-analyzed here for comparative purposes) and newly collected German data, we explore how input frequency, naming inconsistency, category size, and perceptual saliency influence these processes. Our findings show that centroid mapping in both languages is primarily shaped by input frequency, that is, children learn prototypical meanings by hearing the respective color words often. In contrast, boundary delineation is predicted by naming consistency in adult speakers, that is, children's differentiation of color categories is based on the consistency with which adults refer to the same color with the same word. The structural characteristics of each language's lexicon affect these qualitative aspects, highlighting an interplay between perceptual constraints and language-specific lexical structures. As such, understanding the degree to which commercially-available generative language models (LLMs) replicate human judgements of affective connotations may help better understand human-model interactions. We test the ability of three LLMs - GPT-4o, Mistral Large, and Llama 3.1 - to estimate human affective connotation ratings of words representing social identities, behaviours, modifiers, and settings in three language cultures: English (US), French (France), and German (Germany). We find that LLM ratings of terms correlate strongly with human ratings. However, their ratings tend to be overly extreme and patterns of correlations between meaning dimensions only loosely approximate those of human ratings. Consistent with previous findings of English-language and American biases in LLMs, we find that LLMs tend to perform better on English terms, though this pattern varies somewhat by meaning dimension and the type of term in question. Focus-based brief parent-infant psychotherapy (PIP-f) was developed to support parents 'mentalize' their child's affective states and promote a healthy parent-child relationship and child development. Efficacy of PIP-f was evaluated against care-as-usual (CAU) in a randomized controlled trial within the SKKIPPI project. Method N = 120 mothers diagnosed with an ICD-10 psychopathological disorder and their infants under one year were randomly assigned to PIP-f (n = 57) or CAU (n = 63). Primary outcome was maternal sensitivity in mother-child interaction after 6 weeks of intervention. Secondary outcomes include maternal and child psychopathological symptoms, child development, parenting stress, emotional availability, parental reflective functioning and child attachment after 6 weeks and 12 months. Results PIP-f was not superior to CAU in maternal sensitivity (b = 0.129, 95\%CI [-0.161, 0.418], p = 0.378) at post-intervention, nor in maternal symptoms (b =-0.702, [-2.603, 1.198], p = 0.463) or child symptoms of regulatory disorder (b = 1.079, [-2.344, 4.502], p = 0.531). Attachment security assessed at 12 months did not differ between intervention groups (OR = 2.0, [0.64, 6.33], p = 0.226). Moderator analyses suggest that emotional availability and parental reflective functioning improve up to 12 months for more severe cases. Conclusion Differences between PIP-f and CAU were smaller than expected, but PIP-f seemed to reduce symptoms of mental health problems. Some evidence exists that mothers with higher symptom burden benefit from PIP-f. High dropout rates and initially high emotional availability prevent generalizability. PaSyMo contributes to the growing field of GAM research (Games and Agent-based Modeling; Szczepanska et al., 2022) by providing a framework that explores the integration of gaming mechanics with urban simulation tools, highlighting their potential to support sustainable urban planning. The approach draws from participatory modeling (Sterling et al., 2019; Voinov \& Bousquet, 2010) while leveraging state-of-the-art geospatial simulation and interactive interfaces to facilitate communication and co-production of knowledge among diverse stakeholders. Exploratory findings suggest that combining gaming experience with geospatial data visualization and ABM offers a promising approach to communicate the potential implications and trade-offs of urban planning initiatives. This integration enhances stakeholder engagement, promotes shared understanding, and supports consensus building. By making urban planning processes more interactive, PaSyMo can extend the impact of planning research beyond academic settings. Preliminary insights indicate that PaSyMo can enhance stakeholder understanding, knowledge integration, consensus-building, and proactive planning, especially in contexts of decision-making in complex and uncertain situations; however, these findings need to be substantiated in future studies.}, subject = {Modellierung}, language = {en} } @article{HenkelZimmermannVolzetal., author = {Henkel, Miriam and Zimmermann, Johannes and Volz, Matthias and Huber, Dorothea and Staats, Hermann and Benecke, Cord}, title = {The Long-Term Effectiveness of Psychodynamic and Analytical Psychotherapy in Routine Care}, series = {Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology}, volume = {93}, journal = {Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology}, number = {2}, address = {Washington, D.C.}, organization = {American Psychological Association (APA)}, issn = {0022-006X}, doi = {10.1037/ccp0000985}, pages = {814 -- 828}, abstract = {Objective: This naturalistic study examines the long-term effectiveness of two psychoanalytically oriented therapies-psychodynamic psychotherapy (PP) and analytical psychotherapy (AP)-in routine care settings in Germany. Method: A total of 428 patients diagnosed with various mental disorders according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fourth edition, underwent treatment with either PP or AP. Diagnoses were reassessed at the end of treatment, and patients provided annual self-reports of their mental health over a 6-year period. We employed propensity score methods and piecewise linear latent growth curve models to estimate treatment effects on primary outcomes (i.e., number of diagnoses, symptom distress) and secondary outcomes (i.e., personality dysfunction, interpersonal problems, general life satisfaction). Results: Patients exhibited substantial and sustained improvements across all outcomes in both treatments. Notably, those receiving AP experienced greater (long-term) improvement in primary and most secondary outcomes compared to those in PP. Improvements in PP primarily occurred during the 1st year, while AP patients continued to show progress throughout the entire observation period. For some outcomes (symptom distress, personality dysfunction, and interpersonal problems), AP was particularly effective for patients with more severe problems at baseline. Conclusions: Psychoanalytically oriented treatments in routine care are associated with substantial and lasting improvements, even posttreatment. Our findings highlight an incremental benefit of AP over PP, particularly for complex cases. This study aimed to investigate the assumed prevalence, perceived likelihood, and fear of drink-versus needle-spiking, and associated mental strain. Data from a cross-sectional online-survey (November 2022 - January 2023) of 1916 adults connected to Berlin's nightlife-scene were analyzed. Almost a quarter reported having experienced drink-spiking, but only a small fraction sought medical or police attention; about 1\% suspected needle-spiking. Presumptive victims of drink-spiking rated the likelihood and fear of spiking significantly higher and exhibited more symptoms of depression and anxiety. Considering toxicological and police findings, the reported prevalence and perceived likelihood of spiking seem to be highly overestimated. This, in conjunction with associated mental strain, highlights the importance of adequately addressing the issue of spiking through psychoeducation, prevention, and interprofessional investigation.}, subject = {Tropfen}, language = {en} } @article{SchoenfeldMerkelHildebrandtetal., author = {Sch{\"o}nfeld, Romy and Merkel, Hannah and Hildebrandt, Frauke and Lonnemann, Jan}, title = {Partizipative Prozesse in Kindertagesst{\"a}tten}, series = {Diskurs Kindheits- und Jugendforschung}, volume = {20}, journal = {Diskurs Kindheits- und Jugendforschung}, number = {4}, publisher = {Budrich}, address = {Leverkusen}, issn = {2193-9713}, doi = {10.3224/diskurs.v20i4.07}, pages = {535 -- 549}, abstract = {Studien zeigen, dass es fr{\"u}hp{\"a}dagogischen Fachkr{\"a}ften nicht umfassend gelingt, Kindern in Alltagssituationen Beteiligungsm{\"o}glichkeiten zu gew{\"a}hren (Hildebrandt et al., 2021). However, targeted prevention and treatment strategies are lacking, and little is known about the specific needs of users regarding supportive approaches. Methods To address this gap, a mixed-methods longitudinal study was conducted with two waves of online data collection (11/2022-01/2023; 11/2023-01/2024) in Germany. The adult convenience sample (N = 2,196, with n = 240 participating in the follow-up) was mostly connected to Berlin's nightlife scene and included GHB/GBL/BD users and their (non-user) social environment. Perceptions and needs regarding prevention and harm-reduction, reasons and measures of decreasing use, and the impact of GHB/GBL/BD use were analyzed both quantitatively and qualitatively. Results Education, harm reduction strategies, and specialized support options were welcomed by users and non-users, while restrictive approaches were viewed negatively, particularly by heavy users. Many participants expressed a desire to reduce GHB/GBL/BD use, driven primarily by health concerns, immediate use risks, and addiction, but only few participants had previously accessed preventive/therapeutic services. The follow-up showed little change in perceptions and experiences over time. Conclusions The findings underscore the need for comprehensive and integrative prevention and treatment strategies for GHB/GBL/BD use, with harm reduction approaches prioritized over restrictions.
