While previous cross-linguistic studies have typically addressed these aspects in isolation, this paper explicitly investigates both processes simultaneously, assessing language-specific and perceptual factors contributing to lexical acquisition. Using previously collected Japanese data (re-analyzed here for comparative purposes) and newly collected German data, we explore how input frequency, naming inconsistency, category size, and perceptual saliency influence these processes. Our findings show that centroid mapping in both languages is primarily shaped by input frequency, that is, children learn prototypical meanings by hearing the respective color words often. In contrast, boundary delineation is predicted by naming consistency in adult speakers, that is, children's differentiation of color categories is based on the consistency with which adults refer to the same color with the same word. The structural characteristics of each language's lexicon affect these qualitative aspects, highlighting an interplay between perceptual constraints and language-specific lexical structures. Focus-based brief parent-infant psychotherapy (PIP-f) was developed to support parents 'mentalize' their child's affective states and promote a healthy parent-child relationship and child development. Efficacy of PIP-f was evaluated against care-as-usual (CAU) in a randomized controlled trial within the SKKIPPI project. Method N = 120 mothers diagnosed with an ICD-10 psychopathological disorder and their infants under one year were randomly assigned to PIP-f (n = 57) or CAU (n = 63). Primary outcome was maternal sensitivity in mother-child interaction after 6 weeks of intervention. Secondary outcomes include maternal and child psychopathological symptoms, child development, parenting stress, emotional availability, parental reflective functioning and child attachment after 6 weeks and 12 months. Results PIP-f was not superior to CAU in maternal sensitivity (b = 0.129, 95\%CI [-0.161, 0.418], p = 0.378) at post-intervention, nor in maternal symptoms (b =-0.702, [-2.603, 1.198], p = 0.463) or child symptoms of regulatory disorder (b = 1.079, [-2.344, 4.502], p = 0.531). Attachment security assessed at 12 months did not differ between intervention groups (OR = 2.0, [0.64, 6.33], p = 0.226). Moderator analyses suggest that emotional availability and parental reflective functioning improve up to 12 months for more severe cases. Conclusion Differences between PIP-f and CAU were smaller than expected, but PIP-f seemed to reduce symptoms of mental health problems. Some evidence exists that mothers with higher symptom burden benefit from PIP-f. High dropout rates and initially high emotional availability prevent generalizability. Emotion-specific vocabulary was measured by size (i.e., number of emotion words children use) and depth (i.e., adult-like use of emotion words). Findings emphasize the role of children's emotion-specific vocabulary rather than general vocabulary for early-acquired and later-acquired components of emotion understanding, especially when measured by expressive tasks. Teasing is a special kind of social interaction due to its dual nature: It consists of a slightly provocative contingent action accompanied by positive ostensive emotional cues. Teasing thus presents an especially interesting test case to inform us about young children's abilities to deal with complex social intentions. In a first experiment, we looked at 9-, 12-, and 18-month-old infants' ability to understand and differentiate a teasing intention from a trying intention and a refuse intention. We found that by 12 months of age, infants react differently (gaze, reach) and by 18 months they smile more in reaction to the Tease condition. In the second experiment, we tested 13-, 20- and 30-month-old children in closely matched purely playful and teasing situations. We also investigated potential social effects of teasing interactions on a subsequent affiliation sequence. Twenty- and 30-month-old children smile more in the Teasing than in the Play condition. For the 30-month-old toddlers, additionally, number of laughs is much higher in the Tease than in the Play condition. No effect on affiliation could be found. Thus, from very early in development, infants and toddlers are able to differentiate teasing from superficially similar but serious behavior and from around 18 months of age they enjoy it more. Infants and toddlers are able to process a complex social intention like teasing.
