Satirisch nannte er sich dabei selbst "Herr Maschine", aber entsprach das auch seinem Selbstverst{\"a}ndnis und wie haben ihn die Zeitgenossen gesehen? Diesen Fragen geht die vorliegende Studie nach, indem sie ein dreifaches Portr{\"a}t La Mettries zeichnet: Sie {\"u}berpr{\"u}ft erstens die konkreten Portr{\"a}tbilder, die zu ihm vorliegen oder ihm bloß zugeschrieben wurden.
