This turn is viewed under the changing conditions in production and circulation of social media platforms and the technical unity of photo and video camera. Various photographic practices and aspects will be adressed: the accelerated and ubiquitous production of images (capture and processing), which is dialectically related to the aesthetics of the images, their mode of reception (displays), their distribution and storage (platforms) and the (photographic) apparatuses, with which they are produced. The increase in photographic production is accompanied by a shift away from the decisive and composed single image. The unified apparatus of photographic and video technology is bringing both media ever closer together, which in turn supports the tendency toward the mobile and mobilized image. Building on Allan Sekula's notion of the instrumental image developed in light of aerial composite photographs taken during World War I, we propose to speak of instrumental data to describe operative platforms fusing data from satellites, social media, and local sensors and using them for divergent political ends, most notably the control of borders and the quality of water, air, and crops in Europe. Taking the EU-funded pilot project CALLISTO as a case study, we combine media-theoretical analysis, artistic research, and critical data visualization to address the nexus of visualization, decision making, and control effected by the ways in which the platform promises to make satellite data operable, ultimately fusing not just data but also the corresponding social fields of climate and migration.}, subject = {Luftbild}, language = {en} } @incollection{Gerling, author = {Gerling, Winfried}, title = {Anschauung}, series = {Paradoxalit{\"a}t des Medialen}, booktitle = {Paradoxalit{\"a}t des Medialen}, publisher = {Fink}, address = {Paderborn}, isbn = {978-3-7705-5502-4}, pages = {125 -- 146}, subject = {Medientheorie}, language = {de} } @incollection{GerlingJaeger, author = {Gerling, Winfried and J{\"a}ger, Jens}, title = {A Conversation with Fatimah M.
