Projection techniques generally aim to make a high-dimensional information space visible in form of a planar layout. However, the meaning of the resulting data projections can be hard to grasp. It is seldom clear why elements are placed far apart or close together and the inevitable approximation errors of any projection technique are not exposed to the viewer. Previous research on dimensionality reduction focuses on the efficient generation of data projections, interactive customisation of the model, and comparison of different projection techniques. There has been only little research on how the visualization resulting from data projection is interacted with. We contribute the concept of probing as an integrated approach to interpreting the meaning and quality of visualizations and propose a set of interactive methods to examine dimensionality-reduced data as well as the projection itself. The methods let viewers see approximation errors, question the positioning of elements, compare them to each other, and visualize the influence of data dimensions on the projection space. We created a web-based system implementing these methods, and report on findings from an evaluation with data analysts using the prototype to examine multidimensional datasets.}, subject = {Informationswissenschaft}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{ThomMeierHeidmann, author = {Thom, Andreas and Meier, Sebastian and Heidmann, Frank}, title = {Anforderungsanalyse bei IT-Experten mit der Experience-Sample-Methode}, series = {Mensch und Computer 2015 - Usability Professionals}, booktitle = {Mensch und Computer 2015 - Usability Professionals}, publisher = {De Gruyter}, address = {Berlin}, isbn = {978-3-1104-4332-5}, doi = {10.1515/9783110443882-015}, pages = {133 -- 143}, abstract = {Dieser Beitrag besch{\"a}ftigt sich mit den Herausforderungen eine Anforderungsanalyse im hoch technologischen Umfeld der IT-Security durchzuf{\"u}hren, bei dem keine der {\"u}blichen ethnografischen Methoden wie teilnehmende Beobachtung u.a. m{\"o}glich waren. Web-based map services and visualisations for spatial data are being optimised for use on these new mobile devices. Despite the fast development of mobile devices, compared to laptop and desktop computers they remain slower in terms of processing power and have limited memory capacity. Bandwidth in most areas is still limited, regardless of the fast expansion of high-speed internet for mobile devices. To overcome these two limitations an improvement in existing spatial data visualisations is necessary. This chapter compares existing methods and presents a new approach to generating and delivering web-based heat map visualisations for spatial data that is optimised for mobile devices.}, subject = {Mobiles Endger{\"a}t}, language = {en} } @techreport{HeidmannThomMeier, author = {Heidmann, Frank and Thom, Andreas and Meier, Sebastian}, title = {Wachstumskern Potenzial : MSNI - Mobile Semantische Navigation und Information, Teilprojekt 3: Nutzerschnittstellen und Content-Visualisierung.
