Visual knowledge maps are being used to improve the communication processes within global organizations. Knowledge maps are graphical presentations of ontological knowledge as well as of business processes. Especially for enterprises working in a multi-cultural space the explicit formaliza-tion of knowledge and business rules using graphical models seems to be a very promising approach in order to improve discussion and learning processes. Publishing and automatic inference or search techniques are becoming available due to the latest standards for Semantic Web worked out by W3C. This article gives an impression how to create end user interfaces for the ”Corporate Knowledge Base” using MS Office and Visio with the modeling tool SemTalk. Several problems on capturing and maintaining large scale knowledge bases are discussed. Specific attention is given to the problem of weighting and association of information from orthogonal ontologies, which arises while using the same concepts in different graphical scenarios.
Summary In this paper, a simplified model of tangential contact between tyre and rigid surface is investigated. By linearization the eigensystem of the contact equations is obtained and parameter variations are carried out. It is shown, that some vehicle model parameters have great influence on the eigensystem of tangential contact and can determine the highest eigenfrequency of the system vehicle and tyre. Root loci are used to investigate the influence of parameters like vehicle velocity and gridwidth of the discretization. Based on the eigensystem, stability areas of numerical methods in solving the partial differential equations of tangential contact are calculated. Numerical solutions using stiff and nonstiff integrators are compared with respect to the stability areas, computational effort and accuracy. The results are discussed with a view to further development.

Two problems that appear in the linearization of certain free boundary value problems of the hydrodynamics of two viscous fluids are studied in the strip-like domain
Π = {x = (x1, x2) ∈ ℝ2 : x1 ∈ ℝ1, (0 < x2 < h*) ∨ (h* < x2 < 1)}.
The first problem arises in the linearization of a two-layer flow down a geometrically perturbed inclined plane. The second one appears after the linearization of a two-layer flow in a geometrically perturbed inclined channel with one moving (smooth) wall. For this purpose the unknown flow domain was mapped onto the double strip Π.
The arising linear elliptic problems contain additional unknown functions in the boundary conditions. The paper is devoted to the investigation of these boundary problems by studying the asymptotics of the eigenvalues of corresponding operator pencils. It can be proved that the boundary value problems are uniquely solvable in weighted Sobolev spaces with exponential weight. The study of the full (nonlinear) free boundary value problems will be the topic of a forthcoming paper.

An intelligent robot platform for autonomous systems with vision capabilities has been developed by the University of Applied Sciences Brandenburg in cooperation with SME's. The system is suitable as a research and education platform for universities, a basis for industrial applications and for private developers of robots. This paper presents an architecture overview and application details of the RCUBE system. RCUBE is available in 2 modular versions: (1) a cost-effective platform for reactive robots and private developers (2) a performant platform for intelligent robots with image processing capabilities suitable for research, development and education in the field of service robotics. The system consists of 3 ready-to-program hardware modules with a basic software layer. They can be combined in different configurations. The modularity provides the flexibility to configure an RCUBE system for different application areas, but also single modules can be used in applications such as autonomous intelligent cameras or planning robots (e.g. lawnmower, vacuum cleaner). A key feature is the capability to autonomous image processing combined with sensors and actors, small size and low power consumption. RCUBE opens the way to small independent seeing robots.
Cytotoxic activity of drug conjugates of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) and doxorubicin alone was investigated compared to doxorubicin in breast cancer cells with and without expression of hCG receptors. Expression of hCG receptor was determined in MCF-7 and MB231 breast cancer cell line using a multiplex nested rt-PCR approach. The entire sequence of mRNA encoding for hCG receptor was detected in MCF-7 but not in MB231 breast cancer cell line. Cytostatic effect of doxorubicin–hCG conjugates was investigated in these cell lines in comparison to unconjugated doxorubicin. The number of viable cells was determined after 24, 48, 72, 96, and 120 h. To exclude non-specific uptake of the carrier hCG from the culture media, a similar experiment was performed with albumin–doxorubicin conjugates. The number of viable cells decreased in a concentration depending manner after doxorubicin and hCG–doxorubicin conjugate treatment. However, the cytotoxic effect of hCG–doxorubicin conjugate was 10-fold increased compared to unconjugated doxorubin in hCG-receptor positive MCF-7 but not in hCG-receptor negative MB231 cells. Albumin–doxorubicin conjugates showed no increased toxicity compared to doxorubicin. We conclude that the cytotoxic effect of hCG–doxorubicin conjugates is mediated specifically via the hCG receptor. By using hCG conjugates, the development of more selective cytostatics can be achieved.
Physikdidaktik in Deutschland: Ergebnisse einer Umfrage der Europäischen Physikalischen Gesellschaft
(2003)
An inquiry among national experts on physics education research and teaching has been carried out using a questionnaire that deals with the organization of physics teacher training and the main tasks and research activities of professionals in physics education. The goal was to collect data on a European scale on physics teacher training at universities by professionals as well as on research activities by professionals in the field of physics education. Results are presented based on answers from 22 European countries.
Some laboratory demonstrations on atmospheric optics are presented. The focus is on dispersion effects in mirages, lateral mirages, and inferior mirages produced with small hot plates. We also show a demonstration of the upper-tangent-arc halo, produced with a hexagonal prism, rotating about two axes.

Rail defects: an overview
(2003)
For about 150 years, the steel rail has been at the very heart of the world's railway systems. The rail works in a harsh environment and, as part of the track structure, it has little redundancy; thus, its failure may lead to catastrophic derailment of vehicles, the consequences of which can include death, injury, costs and loss of public confidence. These can have devastating and long-lasting effects on the industry. Despite the advances being made in railway permanent way engineering, inspection and rail-making technology, continually increasing service demands have resulted in rail failure continuing to be a substantial economic burden and a threat to the safe operation of virtually every railway in the world. This paper presents an overview of rail defects and their consequences from the earliest days of railways to the present day.
