Der Trick mit der Tischdecke
(2015)
Abstract

Abstract

Double pane windows are common objects which can enrich physics teaching at undergraduate level at least in five different fields. First, having sealed inner spaces filled with gas, one can discuss gas law problems upon changes of pressure and/or temperature. Second, when discussing temperature differences between inside and outside, one needs to take into account the associated heat transfer mechanisms which define the pane temperatures, enclosing the gas. Third, using elastic properties of the glass, one may treat deformations of the window panes upon those changes or additional manually applied external pressure. Fourth, the reflective properties of glass combined with the pane deformations result in concave or convex mirrors, which when illuminated by the Sun, may lead to focal points on projection areas such as facing houses. Fifth, such areas receive an increased irradiance which leads to associated thermal effects. Starting from the most obvious daily life phenomenon, the fascinating caustics of reflected sunlight on streets or walls, all of these double pane window phenomena are investigated experimentally as well as theoretically.
Light scattering from small particles changes if the particles are absorbing. Whereas the effect is small for coronas and Bishop's ring, glories show pronounced attenuation with increasing absorption. Results indicate suitable wavelength regions for studies of glory scattering from cloud tops. The behavior of core-shell particles could have applications for studying the atmosphere of Venus; in addition it provides more insight into the simple ray-path model of the glory.

This study analyzes approaches to decarbonize the energy supply of the secondary steel processing industry. Therefore, real data from a secondary steel production company is used in combination with state-of-the art low carbon energy supply technologies. Also, the use of waste heat from a pusher furnace for process integration is considered. The developed temporal process model allows holistic optimizing and expanding the steel making process system regarding techno-economic criteria. As we show, implementing the annual heat demand of a municipality shows that a nearly 100 % self-sufficient heat supply is possible.
The German government's initiative to cover 80% of the gross electricity supply with renewable energies by 2050 brings considerable ecological benefits, but also poses several challenges. One of these challenges is the growing number of photovoltaic systems (PV systems), which, due to their high feed-in power, already pose a risk to the security of the electricity distribution grid during long periods of sunny weather. To counteract this, active research is being carried out in the field of PV power forecasting. This research is primarily aimed at providing the grid operator with a predicted power output, which enables a longer planning horizon and thus increases the operational grid security. However, the considerable annual electricity consumption of private households and the increasing spread of PV systems for self-consumption show that the energy behavior of households, especially self-consumption, also influences grid security. Additionally, households have an incentive to boost their self-consumption because the cost of drawing each kilowatt-hour from the grid is substantially higher than the compensation received for injecting an equivalent amount of energy back into the grid. However, as of now, there is no software available that easily enables households to tailor the usage patterns of their electrical appliances according to a photovoltaic (PV) forecast. The project described here aims to close this gap by creating such software. Various PV forecasting models are used and tested for their suitability for this purpose. A self-generated optimization process is implemented in this project to optimize the consumer configuration based on the PV forecasts. The here-developed tool enables the user to enter parameters for his PV system and the specific load profiles of his electrical appliances. Based on this data, the optimization algorithm determines a consumption plan with a forecast horizon until the end of the next day that maximizes the user's self-consumption. To validate the tool, the optimization process is carried out over a period of 60 days using a predefined scenario and the results are compared with a scenario in which the electrical appliances are intuitively operated at midday. The analysis of these results ultimately shows the potential impact of such a tool on the economic efficiency of private households and the supply stability.
A procedure to experimentally simulate pollen coronas is discussed. Observed coronas are due to pine and birch pollen having different geometries. Using computer simulations, two-dimensional projections of a large number of pollenlike objects with adjustable shapes, with or without preferential orientation and statistical or regular spatial distribution, are generated. The photograph of the printout allows samples with typical sizes between 20 and 200 µm. Their diffraction patterns can closely resemble the ones observed in nature and predicted by theory.

Fast protein and metabolite liquid chromatography (FPLMC) was introduced years ago to enable the easy separation of high-molecular compounds such as proteins from small molecules and the identification of the low-molecular substances. In this paper, the method is applied for the rapid evaluation of freshness and monitoring the aging of animal meat and fish. A novel chromatographic sensor was developed with a deep UV LED-based photometric detection unit (255–265 nm), an original flow cuvette and registration scheme; the processing of a chromatogram with the sensor takes approximately 15 min. Strict isochronism between the elution of ATP metabolites, mainly hypoxanthine (Hx) and inosine monophosphate (IMP), and the time of maturation of meat or fish, was discovered. A new freshness index H* = [Hx]/[IMP] was introduced, which is proportional to the instrumental delay time in the FPMLC chromatograms: the H* index < 0.5 indicates the presence of inosine monophosphate (IMP) and the high quality of the meat or fish. Reasonably strong correlations were revealed between data obtained by FPMLC and total volatile basic nitrogen TVB-N (for fish) or volatile fatty acids VFA (for meat) content. Moreover, putative nucleotide salvage and an increase in the concentration of IMP were observed in fish after heat treatment using the FPMLC sensor and NMR technique.

Climate change, but also geopolitical circumstances, are moving topics such as energy efficiency and renewable energies more and more into the focus of the population, economy , and politics. As a result, the will to optimize new and existing energy systems extends from private individuals to companies and even entire communities. This work describes the development and usage of a new software called FINEconcepts which creates a digital twin of an energy system. This virtual model can then be used to optimize the energy system based on annual costs, CO2 emissions or other relevant criteria such as self-sufficiency. Because all system components, which include renewable technologies as well, can be added as a building block with chosen but changeable parameters, the software allows the user to explore and awaken interest and understanding of technologies that were previously considered too costly, irrelevant, or unrealistic. Implemented projects in small and large companies as well as in residential areas did prove, that the usage of FINEconcepts leads not only to more efficient energy systems by increasing the use of renewable energy, but also increased knowledge and understanding in terms of energy. Besides economics, ecology and security, understanding is an equally important factor in achieving a sustainable energy supply.

Flickering lamps
(2015)
Abstract
Many processes in electromagnetism vary with time. Some of them are well known, in particular those related to line frequencies of 50 Hz or 60 Hz such as fluctuating light output of discharge and incandescent lamps. The flickers of discharge and incandescent lamps have quite different physical principles involved, which are investigated experimentally using high-speed cameras and theoretically using simplified models. The topic is related to other phenomena such as the transient behaviour of phosphor layers covering the screen of oscilloscopes and the time-varying Lorentz force acting on the filament of light bulbs. All studies are well suited for teaching selected aspects of electromagnetism and light at undergraduate level at university.
Abstract
nfrared spectrometry is one of the most important tools in the field of spectroscopic analysis. This is due to the high information content of spectra in the so-called spectroscopic fingerprint region, which enables measurement not only of gases, but also of liquids and solids. Today, infrared spectroscopy is almost completely dominated by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. FTIR spectroscopy is able to detect minute quantities in the ppm and ppb ranges, and the respective analyses are now standard tools in science as well as industry. Therefore FTIR spectroscopy should be taught within the standard curriculum at university to physicists and engineers. Here we present respective undergraduate laboratory experiments designed for students at the end of their third year. Experiments deal first with understanding the spectrometer and second with recording and analysing spectra. On the one hand, transmission spectra of gases are treated which relate to environmental analytics (being probably the most prominent and well-known examples), and on the other hand, the focus is on the transmission and reflection spectra of solids. In particular, silicon wafers are studied—as is regularly done in the microelectronics industry—in order to characterize their thickness, oxygen content and phonon modes.
Rolling contact fatigue generates cracks on the running surface of high strength railway rails which grow under a small angle into the rail head. These cracks can cause in its last stage the fracturing of the rail. The crack extension behaviour is – as the origin of these cracks too – influenced by the cold working of the rail steel. The crack growth in the first stage is fracture mechanically analyzed by means of two-dimensional modelling. The simulation results are assessed for the use of rail grinding. A criterion for the change of the crack growth direction could not be derived, but the following stages of the crack growth in the transverse direction and the final fracture and the conditions for secondary fractures are considered. Reusable solid wheels manufactured of the old steel BV1 (nearly equivalent to the solid or monobloc wheel steel R1 according to the new nomenclature) show in some cases rolling defects on the surface of the wheel disc. The fatigue behaviour of such defects is analysed by means of the linear-elastic fracture mechanics and Monte Carlo simulation and assessed to be able to derive the allowable defect size for the non-destructive testing. This paper was firstly presented at the Second International Symposium on Fatigue Design FD’95, held in Helsinki (Finland) on 5 – 8 September 1995. The complete research report is published under the title „Oberflächendefekte im Scheibenbereich” (Manufacturing surface defects in the disc area of solid wheels). The research work was sponsored by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG).

Glass-ceramic composites consisting of potassium-iron-silicate glass and barium titanate mixed in various proportions were successfully synthesized by low-temperature sintering. The crystal structure of the obtained composite samples, the porosity and the microhardness were studied by the X-ray diffraction, the electron microscopy, the weight method, and the Vickers method. Electrical characteristics (dielectric permittivity, tunability and losses) of as-prepared and annealed in oxygen medium samples were investigated at microwaves. According to structural analysis, the synthesized samples are a mixture of KFeSi glass, ferroelectric BaTiO3, and dielectric barium polytitanates; the ratio of the latter determines the electrical properties of the composites. Depending on the content of barium titanate, the studied composite samples show a permittivity from 50 to 270 with a dielectric loss level of 0,1–0,02 in frequency range from 3 to 10 GHz. Annealing of composite samples in an oxygen-containing environment leads to an increase in their dielectric permittivity and tunability by 10–25% and a twofold decrease in dielectric loss.
