However, an increase in population tends to put a strain on existing education systems, especially in Africa where most countries are characterized by slow economic development, rapid population growth rates and a median age just shy of 20 years. Due to the slow rate of economic growth, many African countries lack the financial capability to provide proper education for their ever-growing populations or even already overpopulated regions, many of which have people who have reached the appropriate school-going age. This leads to a series of disruptive impacts on the education systems resulting in a people who are poorly or improperly educated, and thus are not equipped with the necessary skills required for the vast technical, professional and ever modernizing high-skill job markets such as construction, economic and technical professions, teaching occupations and so on, all of which drive economic growth and development. Therefore, we can see that rapid population growth, if left unchecked, may lead to overpopulation scenarios which could have a negative disruptive impact on education and human development, both of which are important factors necessary for economic growth. An example of a prototypical application - albeit based on a self-programmed interface - is Nitze's(2024) StudyBuddy, which simulates oral exams. Yet, the extent to which these AI-based exam assistants canautonomously conduct complete exam assessments—creating questions and evaluating and grading responseswithout manual oversight—is still largely unexplored. Despite the clear advantages, issues related to the quality ofthe generated content, the precision of assessments, ethical implications, and acceptance among learners persist assignificant concerns.This paper is a proof-of-concept study combined with a field experiment for an AI-based exam assistant based onthe StudyBuddy suggested by Nitze (2024). The exam assistant provides students with a set of quiz questions andcase studies based on an 80-page reader on topics in organizational behavior, offering personalized feedback andquestion-by-question scoring ranging from 0 to 100%, along with an overall grade and personalized feedback. Toevaluate learning behavior and outcome (in the practice phase), perceived fairness (in the exam phase) and overalllearner acceptance, we run a field experiment with N=35 students enrolled in a business management program at atechnical university in Germany. They take part in a quiz assignment provided and graded by the exam assistant andsubsequently answer a survey with questions based on the Perceived Fairness scale (Sonnleitner & Kovacs, 2020)and the Trust in Automated Systems Test (Wojton et al., 2020). Additionally, the learning outcomes are assessed ina retrospective pre-post design according to Drennan and Hyde (2008). Results will be available by the End of April2024.Insights gained from this study will shed light on the question whether custom chatbots can be effectively used forscalable, efficient assessment processes in higher education. As the ready-made interfaces already available requireminimal prerequisites and technical skills, they present an accessible opportunity for instructors to develop theirown AI-based examination tools, and to ease manual corrections, to guarantee consistent grading and to providestudents with individualized, constructive feedback on their solutions even in large courses where personalizedfeedback would not be possible when manual grading is used.The results of this study will shed light on whether customised chatbots can be effectively used for scalable, efficientassessment processes in higher education. LoRaWAN technology distinguishes itself by its capability to support long-range, low-power IoT applications, making it ideal for extensive and sparsely populated areas. The LCF aims to address common challenges in these settings, such as limited technical expertise, financial constraints, and the need for cross-municipal cooperation. It outlines roles and responsibilities across various stakeholders including municipal authorities, IT service providers, application developers, and end-users. The framework emphasizes the balance of technological, economic, social and ecological sustainability in line with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals. Typically, developers pre-define plans, which limits adaptability. This paper presents an approach for BDI agents to dynamically generate plans using large language models (LLMs), exploiting contextual information such as goals, beliefs, and structural data. We evaluate the feasibility, reliability, and limitations of this method, and discuss its implications for the automation of BDI-based agents. Our results suggest that LLMs can enhance agent autonomy by reducing the need for manual plan definition, while maintaining goal-oriented reasoning. JF - European Journal of Education N2 - The study examines the effectiveness of microlearning in developing the capacity to address climate change and adapt to environmental challenges. Conducted as an online field experiment with 140 participants, the study focused on the impacts of smartphone use as an illustrative learning domain for education in climate change-related areas. Using a pre–post research design and simultaneous equation models, the study found improvements in knowledge retention, with a median increase of 38%. The results indicated that the brief microlearning units also promoted sustainability action competencies, such as confidence in one's influence and willingness to act sustainably. This suggests that higher-order learning processes were also triggered, although to a much lesser extent. Furthermore, learner satisfaction was identified as a mediating variable for these positive outcomes. The study concludes that short bursts of knowledge delivered through microlearning activities can be used alongside traditional training methods to build the critical skills needed for initiatives such as the EU Green Deal. They earn money through matchmaking, transaction facilitation, and efficient orchestration of other stakeholders' resources. Small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) play a decisive role in this success story: they offer products and services on many leading DPs and thereby feed platform networks as sellers and suppliers. On the other hand, while DPs enable SMEs to reach new customers and outsource costly managerial tasks, many SMEs struggle with the negative consequences of asymmetric power dynamics and dependency risks in platform business. This paper analyzes 14 cases of SMEs that face power asymmetry as DP value providers, unraveling challenges encountered and coping practices employed in this situation. The findings reveal that power asymmetry between dominant DPs and SMEs creates significant challenges, including exploitative relationships, loss of autonomy, surveillance pressures, and devaluation of SME contributions, while SMEs cope through disintermediation, multi-homing, individual resistance tactics, and striving for more equitable DP models. Moreover, three relationality types are identified: DPs being SMEs' “partners,” “tools,” and “necessary evil.” This article offers a new perspective on boundaries of SME strategies in the DP economy and contributes with empirical insights to the advancing field of entrepreneurial platform research.
