An example of a prototypical application - albeit based on a self-programmed interface - is Nitze's(2024) StudyBuddy, which simulates oral exams. Yet, the extent to which these AI-based exam assistants canautonomously conduct complete exam assessments—creating questions and evaluating and grading responseswithout manual oversight—is still largely unexplored. Despite the clear advantages, issues related to the quality ofthe generated content, the precision of assessments, ethical implications, and acceptance among learners persist assignificant concerns. This paper is a proof-of-concept study combined with a field experiment for an AI-based exam assistant based onthe StudyBuddy suggested by Nitze (2024). The exam assistant provides students with a set of quiz questions andcase studies based on an 80-page reader on topics in organizational behavior, offering personalized feedback andquestion-by-question scoring ranging from 0 to 100\%, along with an overall grade and personalized feedback. Toevaluate learning behavior and outcome (in the practice phase), perceived fairness (in the exam phase) and overalllearner acceptance, we run a field experiment with N=35 students enrolled in a business management program at atechnical university in Germany. They take part in a quiz assignment provided and graded by the exam assistant andsubsequently answer a survey with questions based on the Perceived Fairness scale (Sonnleitner \& Kovacs, 2020)and the Trust in Automated Systems Test (Wojton et al., 2020). Additionally, the learning outcomes are assessed ina retrospective pre-post design according to Drennan and Hyde (2008). Results will be available by the End of April2024.Insights gained from this study will shed light on the question whether custom chatbots can be effectively used forscalable, efficient assessment processes in higher education. Being divided into several domains (for instance, text steganography, digital media steganography, and network steganography), it is crucial to provide a unified terminology as well as a taxonomy that is not limited to some specific applications or areas. A prime attempt towards a unified understanding of terms was conducted in 2015 with the introduction of a pattern-based taxonomy for network steganography. Six years later, in 2021, the first work towards a pattern-based taxonomy for steganography was proposed. However, this initial attempt still faced several shortcomings, e.g., the lack of patterns for several steganography domains (the work mainly focused on network steganography and covert channels), various terminology issues, and the need of providing a tutorial on how the taxonomy can be used during engineering and scientific tasks, including the paper-writing process.
As the consortium who published this initial 2021-study on steganography patterns, in this paper we present the first comprehensive pattern-based taxonomy tailored to fit all known domains of steganography, including smaller and emerging areas, such as filesystem steganography and cyber-physical systems steganography. Besides, to make our contribution more effective and promote the use of the taxonomy to advance research on steganography, we also provide a thorough tutorial on its utilization.

Thereby, HR practitioners often listen to their guts feeling instead of using more systematic HR practices that are, as research evidence shows, more effective for attracting, motivating and retaining talented staff. This paper elaborates on the question how SMEs may profit from the design and implementation of evidence-based, systematic HRM instruments. The analysis focuses on the antecedents of the so called science-practitioner gap in HRM and why it is even more pronounced in SMEs as compared to larger companies. As a conclusion, we find that SMEs need to design HRM instruments that are systematic and evidence-based in their approach, but can be used by HR practitioners on an intuitive basis without ex ante training or cumbersome formal procedures. However, designing HRM instruments based on a so-called "walk-up-and-use" approach means beating new paths. Given the scarce resources for people management in SMEs, such innovative HRM instruments cannot be developed by a single SME alone. Therefore, the paradigm of open cooperation as it has been successfully applied in open source software (OSS) development is evaluated , in particular whether it can be transferred on the design of HRM instruments that take into account the specific needs of SMEs. First of all, we conceptualize a general framework how HR practitioners from SMEs and HR experts from business and academia can jointly develop Open HRM instruments. Then we discuss the social side of Open HRM, in particular why someone should contribute to Open HRM without receiving immediate profits, how to ensure the quality of openly developed HRM instruments and other gov-ernance issues. As a conclusion, we find that-despite a number of technical and social challenges that have to be overcome-Open HRM has a great potential in order to open up evidence-based HRM for SMEs.}, language = {de} } @incollection{LevinaMattern2023, author = {Levina, Olga and Mattern, Saskia}, title = {Ethical and Legal Analysis of Machine Learning Based Systems: A Scenario Analysis of a Food Recommender System}, series = {Recommender Systems: Legal and Ethical Issues}, booktitle = {Recommender Systems: Legal and Ethical Issues}, isbn = {978-3-031-34806-8}, doi = {10.1007/978-3-031-34804-4_9}, pages = {165 -- 185}, year = {2023}, abstract = {Laws are the reflection of the ethical and moral principles of the society. The recommender system is taken here as an example of machine learning-based systems (MLS) that can often be found in the individual, business and administrative applications. The research compares the existing legal solutions, with the focus on the GDPR legislation, and the discovered ethical issues. The ethical analysis is led along the ALTAI principles suggested by the European Commission, the common good approach as well as the general principles constituted in human rights. While the GDPR-based analysis showed that this data- and privacy-based legislation addressed most of the identified ethical issues, questions related to the common good approach in the context of environment and mobility that arise due to the wide spectrum of the MLS usage require further legal discussion. The application of the two approaches shows that conducting the ethical and legal analysis is beneficial for both the designers of such MLS as well as the legal actors. However, the related terminology is not unified among the different domains, such as digital media steganography, text steganography, cyber-physical systems steganography, network steganography (network covert channels), local covert channels, and out-of-band covert channels. To cope with this, a prime attempt has been done in 2015, with the introduction of the so-called hiding patterns, which allow to describe hiding techniques in a more abstract manner. Despite significant enhancements, the main limitation of such a taxonomy is that it only considers the case of network steganography. Therefore, this paper reviews both the terminology and the taxonomy of hiding patterns as to make them more general. Specifically, hiding patterns are split into those that describe the embedding and the representation of hidden data within the cover object. By means of AI, cyber attacks can be efficiently conducted more successful through offensive AI. As for cyber defense, AI can be also utilized against cyber threats (defensive AI). Due to limited resources, especially in small and medium-sized companies (SMEs), there is a need to deploy more effective defensive cyber security solutions. Precisely, the adaptation of AI-based resilient defenses must be driven forward. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to identify and evaluate AI-related use cases with a high impact potential on the cyber security level, while being applicable to SMEs at the same time. In order to reach the research goal, an extensive literature review of several online catalogs, surveys and online platforms was conducted. In conclusion, seven crucial AI-based security features were outlined that are providing a high impact potential to the security level for SMEs. Afterwards, the results are discussed and set into a broader context. Even though AI-based security solutions are providing a large range of advantages, certain challenges and barriers using AI-related security applications are addressed in the paper as well. For this reason, there is a need to bridge the economics of privacy and threats to privacy. To this end, our work relies on the concept of privacy as contextual integrity. This framework defines privacy as appropriate information flows subjected to social norms within particular social contexts or spheres. In this paper, we introduce a preliminary version of a semantic model which aims to relate and provide understanding on how well-established business goals may affect their customers' privacy by designing IoT devices with permission access, data acquired by sensors, among other factors. Finally, we provide a use case application showing how to use the semantic model. The model aims to be an educational tool for professionals in business informatics during the modeling and designing process of a product which may gather sensitive data or may infer sensitive information, giving an understanding of the interaction of the product and its footprint with diverse actors (humans or machines). Bite-sized learning via mobile devices (Mobile Micro-Learning, MML) can be a powerful means to enhance informal work-related learning also in such learning-deprived fields. Based on good practices of recent MML implementations, a lightweight approach is developed. It involves an instructional blueprint and an open-source, low-threshold technology for MML, and meets the specific needs of workers in learning-deprived fields. The main idea is a scan-to-learn system where Quick Response (QR) codes are attached to physical objects in the work environment. Workers can scan the QR codes to learn and are directed to short, interactive learning nuggets. The interplay between the phase transition effects and the contact-line motion, leading to its arrest, remains poorly understood. Here we reveal the early solidification patterns and dynamics of spreading hexadecane droplets. Total internal reflection imaging is employed to temporally and spatially resolve the early solidification behavior. With this, we determine the conditions leading to the contact-line arrest. We quantify the overall nucleation behavior, i.e., the nucleation rate and the crystal growth speed and show its sensitivity to the applied undercooling of the substrate. We also show that for strong enough undercooling it is the rapid growth of the crystals which determines the eventual arrest of the spreading contact line. By combining the Johnson-Mehl-Avrami-Kolmogorov nucleation theory and scaling relations for the spreading, we calculate the temporal evolution of the solid area fraction, which is in good agreement with our observations.}, language = {en} } @article{StannariusHarth2023, author = {Stannarius, Ralf and Harth, Kirsten}, title = {The structure of disintegrating defect clusters in smectic C freely suspended films}, series = {Soft Matter}, journal = {Soft Matter}, number = {19}, publisher = {Royal Society of Chemistry}, doi = {https://doi.org/10.1039/d3sm00808h}, pages = {6109 -- 6115}, year = {2023}, abstract = {Disclinations or disclination clusters in smectic C freely suspended films with topological charges larger than one are unstable. They disintegrate, preferably in a spatially symmetric fashion, into single defects with individual charges of +1, which is the smallest positive topological charge allowed in polar vector fields. While the opposite process of defect annihilation is well-defined by the initial defect positions, disintegration starts from a singular state and the following scenario including the emerging regular defect patterns must be selected by specific mechanisms. We analyze experimental data and compare them with a simple model where the defect clusters adiabatically pass quasi-equilibrium solutions in one-constant approximation. In contrast to purely isotropic droplets which are characterized by a sharp edge and no long-range interactions, the nematic fringe introduces a continuous film thickness change resulting in long-range mutual attraction of droplets. The coalescence scenario is divided in two phases. The first one consists in the fusion of the nematic regions. The second phase involves the dissolution of a thin nematic film between the two isotropic cores. According to many model systems, myosin motor-induced local contractions of initially isotropic actomyosin cortices are nucleation points for generating cortical flows. However, the positive feedback mechanisms by which spontaneous contractions can be amplified towards large-scale directed flows remain mostly speculative. To investigate such a process on spherical surfaces, we reconstituted and confined initially isotropic minimal actomyosin cortices to the interfaces of emulsion droplets. The presence of ATP leads to myosin-induced local contractions that self-organize and amplify into directed large-scale actomyosin flows. By combining our experiments with theory, we found that the feedback mechanism leading to a coordinated directional motion of actomyosin clusters can be described as asymmetric cluster vibrations, caused by intrinsic non-isotropic ATP consumption with spatial confinement. We identified fingerprints of vibrational states as the basis of directed motions by tracking individual actomyosin clusters. These vibrations may represent a generic key driver of directed actomyosin flows under spatial confinement in vitro and in living systems.}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{VeldyaevaFitzScheeg2023, author = {Veldyaeva, Ekaterina and Fitz, Lukas R. One significant source of potential vulnerabilities is medical cyber-physical systems (MCPS). Detecting intrusions in this environment faces challenges different from other domains, mainly due to the heterogeneity of devices, the diversity of connectivity types, and the variety of terminology. To summarize existing results, we conducted a structured literature review (SLR) following the guidelines of Kitchenham et al. for SLRs in software engineering. We developed six research questions regarding detection approach, detection location, included features, adversarial focus, utilized datasets, and intrusion prevention. We identified that most researchers focused on an anomaly-based detection approach at the network layer. The primary focus was on the detection of malicious insiders. While several researchers used publicly available datasets for training and testing their algorithms, the lack of suitable datasets resulted in the development of testbeds consisting of various medical devices. Based on the results, we formulated five future research topics. First, the special conditions of hospital networks, the MCPS deployed within them, and the contrasts to other IT and OT environments should be examined. Thereupon, MCPS-specific datasets should be created that allow researchers to address the health domain's unique requirements and possibilities. At the same time, endeavors aimed at standardization in this area should be supported and expanded. Moreover, the use of medical context for attack detection should be further explored. Die Ergebnisse der dort diskutierten Fragen sind im letzten Beitrag dokumentiert.}, language = {de} } @inproceedings{ThiersL'OrteyeOrlowskietal.2013, author = {Thiers, Angelina and L'Orteye, Annett and Orlowski, Katja and Schrader, Thomas}, title = {Investigation of the Sensormonitor Training - Analysing Exercisers with one-dimensional and multidimensional Instability}, series = {Konferenz: International Congress on Sports Science Research and Technology Support/ Titel: icSPORTS 2013 : Proceedings of the International Congress on Sport Science Research and Technology Support ; September 20-22, 2013, in Vilamoura, Algarve, Portugal}, booktitle = {Konferenz: International Congress on Sports Science Research and Technology Support/ Titel: icSPORTS 2013 : Proceedings of the International Congress on Sport Science Research and Technology Support ; September 20-22, 2013, in Vilamoura, Algarve, Portugal}, publisher = {Science and Technology Publications}, address = {Vilamoura, Algarve, Portugal}, isbn = {978-989-8565-79-2}, doi = {10.5220/0004637700710078}, pages = {71 -- 78}, year = {2013}, abstract = {The importance and the attractivity of the sensorimotor training is still growing. Up to now the impact of the training on the body is not yet fully investigated. Hence, nowadays the planning of the therapy is mainly based on the experiences of the physiotherapist and on the conditions of the practice. For the development of the therapy the physiotherapist is supported by manufacturer's information about the exercisers as well as by general assumptions regarding the sensorimotor training. For the validation of this information two setups were investigated. In the first part, the behavior of two students was studied on three exercisers. Here the EMG data and the motion data were analyzed. In the second part, the behavior of the left and the right body side was analyzed for 16 subjects. The study revealed that the major work for the maintenance of the equilibrium is done by the distal musculature. Furthermore, it was shown that there is a different behavior of the musculature at both body sides. Additionally, it has been proven that each test person had an individual behavior on the exercisers. Consequently, it would be hard to make general assumptions regarding the impact of the training on the body.}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{NitzeWangJahnetal.2024, author = {Nitze, Andr{\´e} and Wang, Tingting and Jahn, Josephine and Ali, Sabah}, title = {Beyond Connectivity: A Sustainable Approach to Municipal LoRaWAN Infrastructure and Services}, series = {Konferenz: ICDS 2024 : The Eighteenth International Conference on Digital Society; Barcelona, Spain}, booktitle = {Konferenz: ICDS 2024 : The Eighteenth International Conference on Digital Society; Barcelona, Spain}, publisher = {IARIA}, pages = {19 -- 24}, year = {2024}, abstract = {This paper introduces the LoRaWAN Collaboration Framework (LCF), a strategic blueprint for deploying and managing LoRaWAN infrastructures in smart cities with an emphasis on rural and small municipalities. LoRaWAN technology is distinguished by its capability to support long-range, low-power IoT applications, making it ideal for extensive and sparsely populated areas. The LCF aims to address common challenges in these settings, such as limited technical expertise, financial constraints, and the need for cross-municipal cooperation. It outlines roles and responsibilities across various stakeholders including municipal authorities, IT service providers, application developers, and end-users. The framework emphasizes the balance of technological, economic, ecological, and social sustainability in line with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals. In this paper we describe the experiences from several LoRaWAN projects in small towns and municipalities, the derived framework, and future research directions towards ensuring the economic viability of the proposed model.}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{ThiersMeffofokOrlowskietal.2013, author = {Thiers, Angelina and Meffofok, L. and Orlowski, Katja and Schrader, Kerstin and Tietze, B. and L'Orteye, Annett and Schrader, Thomas}, title = {Investigation of the Sensormonitor Training using Wireless Sensor Networks - Analyzing Three Different Exerciser}, series = {Konferenz: International Conference on Healt Informatics (HEALTHINF)/ Titel: Proceedings of the International Conference on Health Informatics (HEALTHINF-2013)}, booktitle = {Konferenz: International Conference on Healt Informatics (HEALTHINF)/ Titel: Proceedings of the International Conference on Health Informatics (HEALTHINF-2013)}, publisher = {SCITEPRESS - Science and Technology Publications}, address = {Barcelona, Spain}, isbn = {978-989-5865-37-2}, doi = {10.5220/0004329004130416}, pages = {413 -- 416}, year = {2013}, language = {en} } @inproceedings{SchraderLoewePelchenetal.2015, author = {Schrader, Thomas and L{\"o}we, Katharina and Pelchen, Lutz and Beck, Eberhard}, title = {Analyse der Patientensicherheit in medizinisches Prozessen: der OPT - Modell - Generator}, series = {MedPro 2015, Medizinische Prozesse - Patienten - Sicherheit : Tagungsband ; Brandenburg an der Havel, 5.
