Abstract

Since the beginnings of book printing readability is regarded as the leading principle of book typography. This work examines both readability itself, as well as its optimization. It is analyzed how the reading process for texts that are designed for linear reading and which are printed on paper can be designed optimally. The work’s aim is to create an extensive overview on the topic “readability”, which exceeds mere instructions for the design of readable printed material. The term readability possesses a range of meanings and is used manifold in common parlance. Apart from typography, other disciplines like linguistics or psychology concern themselves with the readability of texts. The readability is influenced on the one hand by the object of reception itself. Here one has to differentiate between typographical factors like for example the font, the font size, the pitch, the page format and the materiality of the reception object. Furthermore the reception situation affects readability. Here cultural factors, the reading situation itself and the individual reader should be mentioned. The ideal cooperation of the different influence factors of the reception object and the reception situation under the aspects of effortlessness and speed of text recognition by the individual reader are understood as optimal readability.
