Abstract
Modern production systems require high availability in order to avoid costly downtimes and to ensure the cost-effectiveness of the investments. The worldwide use of these systems and the high level of complexity of the malfunctions require fast and adequate support from the manufacturer's experts. For this purpose, telediagnostics is the suitable tool, which also has great potential with regard to the factors of saving costs, increasing customer loyalty, reducing response times and flexibility in employee deployment. In the future, telediagnosis will therefore develop into a standard service in the service of manufacturers of capital goods. The currently available solutions are limited to the transmission of sensor and control data, with the partial addition of multimedia information, and are only realizations for specific applications. The aim of this work was therefore the development of an integrated, network-compatible telediagnostic system based on modern, standardized tools and communication structures of the Internet, which realizes the continuous computer support in the entire process chain of diagnosis with powerful software programs. The system and its distributed applications can be accessed by the user with a Java-enabled WWW browser, regardless of location and platform. This means parallel use by the machine operator directly on the production system for local diagnosis and by the experts in the manufacturer's service center for telediagnosis. This integrated approach, which is based on the central provision of the software system on a WWW server, also has the very important advantage of the permanent topicality of the expert knowledge and the applications for the diagnosis. A systematic analysis of the use of this technology in industrial production was carried out as the basis for the development of the telediagnostic system. Both technical, organizational and economic aspects were considered. The deficits of existing solutions were derived from the knowledge gained and converted into concrete requirements that served to develop the concept of the integrated telediagnostic system. Above all, the structural structure and architecture of the software system as well as the information technology content of the databases and the functionality of the applications were developed. The provision of this distributed information via cross-company networks, especially for processing with the applications, is an essential area of responsibility in the telediagnostic system. A communication system was therefore developed as a platform for this data exchange, for which innovative Internet technologies were adapted and used. With the visualization programs, problem-specific views of the production systems and their processes can be generated over the Internet, and valuable information for diagnosis can be obtained remotely. The status visualization provides a comprehensive overview of the current operating status of a production network. More detailed information about a machine can be obtained with the program for the virtual online representation of manufacturing processes in a three-dimensional world and with the software solution for remote control of the user interface of machine controls. The central tool of the telediagnostic system is the internet-capable diagnostic program, with which the user is very efficiently supported in determining the cause of the error and correcting it. This enables both the machine operator and the expert to make quick diagnoses with a uniform program, with the associated positive effects on availability and downtime costs. The main modules of the diagnostic program are the data model to represent the technical expert knowledge, the tool for the acquisition and dynamic adjustment of this information as well as the inference strategies for automatic and user-controlled problem solving. The user is supported in the telediagnostic system to support troubleshooting by web-based multimedia therapy measures. Increasing transparency in the production area, optimizing planning tasks and generating new knowledge for the telediagnostic system is the main field of application of the data mining program. This operates with intelligent analysis methods based on a comprehensive compression of machine and process data. Other programs, such as the notification module for personal information about the occurrence of faults and the tool for multimedia cooperation of several people via the Internet, serve to supplement and round off the tasks of the telediagnostic system. With the system designed and implemented in the context of this work, an important building block for the field of telediagnosis could be developed. Compared to existing solutions, the comprehensive provision of applications for computer support in diagnostics and the consistent use of the Internet as a platform for transferring data and executing programs are particularly worth mentioning. The potential of the telediagnostic system in the industrial environment could be demonstrated in the implementation of this solution on a machine tool at an automobile manufacturer. An analysis carried out in this context showed the acceptance of the overall system by the employees and the performance of the individual applications. In further work, the existing diagnostic tools can be optimized and procedures for data encryption can be integrated into the telediagnostic system. In addition, a functional expansion can take place with regard to comprehensive customer support by the manufacturer via the Internet. Here, e.g. the integration of applications for the optimization of production processes as well as for the administration of service information and orders are interesting additions.
