This working paper aims to reformulate the teleological concepts of Europeanization by relating them to
modernity’s ambivalences, which seems necessary for two reasons. First, both the number and the scope of
crises in European politics and societies have increased considerably in the last two decades. Second, and
more importantly, the project of European integration has changed its status from being a potential problem
solver to being a part of the problem. The paper establishes a broader historical perspective than is usual in
most projects on Europeanization. It argues that crises and drawbacks have been a part of European societal
and political development during most periods of European history. One reason has been the purely European
strategy of colonialism, which was used as a mechanism to outsource the negative consequences of
modernity to places outside of Europe and to peripheral locations within Europe. By including historical and
postcolonial perspectives on contemporary Europeanization, we argue that Europe and modernity are not
characterized by teleological progress but rather engender ambivalent and entangled developments.
This working paper is based on the keynote lecture held at the International Conference
“B/ORDERS IN MOTION. Current Challenges and Future Perspectives” on November 15,
2018. The talk starts with a couple of snapshots from developments and conflicts in the
Mediterranean in the summer of 2018 in order to conjure up the high stakes of border
studies today. The attempt to seal the maritime border performed in particular by the
Italian government is then discussed within a global framework and against the background
of recent developments in (critical) border studies. The point is made that in
order to understand even the most exclusionary border policies and regimes, there is a
need to take into consideration a multiplicity of heterogeneous bordering devices which
prompt and shape wider transformations of political, social, and economic orders. The
talk closes with an outline from this point of view of some of the main challenges for
border studies in Europe and beyond emerging from the current conjuncture.
Despite increasing globalization and decreasing transportation costs, distance remains an essential element of international management. This work discusses different concepts of distance with a focus on individual level psychic distance. The inconsistency of previous psychic distance concepts, and therefore their operationalization, leads to a new framework to differentiate between levels of analysis of distance origins and objects. Possible individual level antecedents of psychic distance can be inert, trained, or experiential, while country level distance antecedents tend to be more stable. This work employs a quantitative study with a quasi-experiment, where respondents gave answers to distance perceptions and different possible antecedents at the beginning and end of a stay abroad. Results derived from different regression models show almost no effects of individual level variables on psychic distance, while country level distances have a strong influence on individual level psychic distance. Implications for research are a more concise concept of distance in international management and a thorough discussion of different kinds of distance antecedents. Empirical findings show counterintuitive effects for cultural backgrounds of respondents, which point to an affective and cognitive element of psychic distance. For management practice, distance should be considered as not only concerning the different levels of analysis and the possible different meanings of distance, but also in regards to how an organization can influence distance perceptions. Since experience and training have hardly any effect, the inert antecedents show that employment policies need to take a more active role.
