Preservation assessments in paper collections – a basis for preservation planning
- The aim of strategic preservation planning is to preserve collections as a whole and in long-term - by making best use of existing institutional resources. In Denmark the Guidelines for the planning of conservation efforts for cultural heritage institutions, formulate a plan for action. This paper investigates how the guidelines instruct the implementation of preservation plans in Danish museums. It examines, whether the given methods are suitable to implement preservation plans into practice. In particular, the focus is set on preservation assessments, which are the foundation for any strategic preservation planning. The result is that it is difficult to set any preservation plan into practice. The processes are not clearly defined, a clear methodology is lacking and there is no assignment of responsibility areas. Therefore the literature forms a basis for the exemplary implementation of preservation assessments in the paper collection at Skagens Museum.
