Warszawa: Instytut Studiów Politycznych PAN, 2017. ISBN: 978-83-64091-86-5 N2 - The Institute of Political Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences published two books in 2017 as a result of the Polish-French scientific project "Punishment, Memory and Politics: Retribution for the Past after World War II", financed by the National Science Centre (NSC) in Poland. According to the first part of the introduction included in both volumes and prepared by project supervisor Andrzej Paczkowski, the participants sought to study "the scope of similarities and differences in the mechanisms, forms and pace of legal, political and symbolic settlements in various countries from the times of World War II until today" (p. 7). Another overall purpose was to investigate „the relationships between the characteristics of a given settlement process and the progression in the democratic consolidation of former dictatorial regimes" (p. 7). Paczkowski also expresses his hope that the research carried out by the Polish-French group of political scientists and historians would contribute to current discussions on problems that had been repeatedly raised in many publications, however selectively, without any general conclusions (p. 8). Nonetheless, the project supervisor did not provide his readers with a brief overview of the current state of the art including the titles of the most important studies on memory and settlements in order to prove its alleged incompleteness and deficiency. Thereby, the reader has to take his statements for granted without having been offered any convincing arguments. Cultural Legacies of Europe at War, 1936–2016" / Manuel Bragança, Peter Tame (ed.) New York: Berghahn Books, 2015. ISBN: 978-1-78238-153-2 N2 - The Long Aftermath is a collection of documented research essays by twenty-one scholars from various nations and disciplines. The sub-title, Cultural Legacies of Europe at War 1936-2016, informs the reader that the book focuses on World War II, its ideological if not military "prequel," the Spanish Civil War (p. 23), and its effects or "aftermath" in the decades under discussion. Several chapters are devoted to each of seven European countries: Spain, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, and the USSR/Russia. The term "cultural legacies" is addressed rather broadly, encompassing personal memories, historical, political, and ideological commentary, and analyses of war-related literature and films. The articles focus on specific topics in detail, although some general conclusions emerge Y1 - 2019 U6 - http://nbn-resolving.de/urn/resolver.pl?urn:nbn:de:kobv:521-opus4-7801 ER - TY - THES A1 - Suarsana, Denis T1 - Facilitating Worker Participation in the EU through an optional Common European Regime on Employee Financial Participation N2 - This study examines how cross-border barriers to the implementation of Employee Financial Participation (EFP) schemes in the EU may be alleviated. It is argued that an optional regime would represent the most appropriate policy-option to this challenge. Finally, a blue-print for such a Common European Regime on EFP is developed drawing upon the results of a comprehensive comparison of the legal regulations on EFP in all EU Member States. (1) The study sheds light on the potential of optional regimes in the context of European civil law. (2) It provides a systematic overview of the incidence and political implications of EFP in the EU. Following this, (3) it discusses the barriers to cross-border EFP schemes in the EU as an infringement to the Right of Establishment of European companies. The study then (4) makes a point for an optional regime as the most appropriate instrument to overcome these barriers in comparison to traditional legal instruments in the EU. After that (5) a blue-print for a Common European Regime on EFP is developed. Finally, (6) the study takes a look beyond and discusses additional policy-meassures to promote EFP on the EU level. A Biographical History of the Polish Orange Alternative Movement" / Major Waldemar Frydrych. Chicho, CA: Minor Compositions, 2013. ISBN: 978-1570272691 N2 - "Poland in this time," readers are told early in Waldemar Fydrych's Lives of the Orange Men, "was a strange and wonderful land. Some people thought it was [a] real trip, but others found it psychotic. For this reason the unfamiliar reader might find themselves disoriented, as if tumbling down a rabbit hole. So for the purposes of edification and understanding, the reader will encounter a number of clear and concise explanatory notes to provide access to this world where the familiar becomes strange" (p. 9). Neither entirely clear nor concise, Fydrych's biographical history of the Orange Alternative movement he helped found is nevertheless an illuminating and pleasurable rabbit hole. Organized in the 1980s, when Poland was gripped by the struggle between the Communist authorities and newly formed Solidary movement, the Orange Alternative offered a playful and radically different point of view – staging irreverent "happenings" and decorating streets with graffiti dwarves. This book records the movement's humor and humanity and is a valuable source for those interested in Polish history and culture, as well as broader questions of political performance and art in public space. Lives of the Orange Men offers a personal glimpse into a pivotal era in Poland, but does so in a way that makes strange the familiar history – and thus revives the spirit of the movement it chronicles. Migrations- und Grenzpolitik in der polnischen Region Karpatenvorland" / Radosław Buraczyński. Cham: Springer International, 2015. ISBN: 978-3-658-09464-5 N2 - The book addresses three key topics. First, the Europeanization of migration and border policies at EU level is discussed in a more general manner. Second – and closely related to the first notion – the author explores the facets of the so-called 'downloading' policy in the EU's multi-level governance system, thus disentangling the processes of Europeanization from the supranational EU level through the national (ch. 3) up to the regional level (ch. 4), where it is supposed to be implemented in first instance. Third, Buraczyński seeks to elaborate on the consequences of these policy changes for the self-positioning and behavioural patterns of the residents of the borderlands. The temporal and spatial context is framed by the Subcarpathian region in the very southeast of Poland (Karpatenvorland) that is studied from the transformation period of 1989 until present day. W kręgu mniej znanych twórców polskiej literatury lat 1863–1914" / Krzysztof Fiołek (ed.). Kraków: Wydawnictwo Universitas, 2014. ISBN: 97883-242-2615-3 N2 - This collection of over fifty essays is devoted, as the title suggests, to a number of lesser known authors of Polish literature of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Instead of limiting the subject of the volume to well-known themes of late romanticism, positivism and Young Poland (as Polish modernism was widely known), one of the main aims of the book is to present authors and works that did not fit into these pre-defined terms. The writers presented in Literatura niewyczerpana are people who created outside the mainstream, or who crossed the boundaries of literary epochs. Significantly, the collection is not only about those who were forgotten and lesser known literary figures, but also about recognised authors and their less popular writings. By avoiding any clear-cut categories when it comes to the periodization of the history of Polish literature, the book brings together essays which could be interesting for readers from beyond the discipline of literary studies. Göttingen: Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht, 2015. ISBN: 978-3-525-37309-5 N2 - This volume of essays addresses the representation of the Second World War in museums and memorials in Eastern Europe. It is the product of a research project funded by the Volkswagen Foundation, bringing together fourteen detailed accounts in German and English of the historical development of such institutions in a range of contexts, including Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Poland and Romania. Apart from one anomalous chapter that details the development of the Dachau concentration camp memorial, the central focus of the volume is on the transition between the antifascist narrative propagated by state socialist regimes in the region to a variety of post-socialist memory cultures. These memory cultures have been determined in each case both by domestic politics in the individual countries and their respective geopolitical circumstances. An Anthology of Twentieth-Century Polish Writings" / Adam Michnik, Agnieszka Marczyk (ed.). Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2018. ISBN: 9780190624514 N2 - In this extremely timely publication, Adam Michnik and Agnieszka Marczyk present twenty-two essays on antisemitism and Polish-Jewish relations written by Polish intellectuals from the interwar period until the present. Originally an immense three-volume work published in Polish, Against Anti-Semitism: An Anthology of Twentieth-Century Polish Writings is a highly curated one volume selection of the "greatest hits" in English translation. [1] With the exception of four essays, which were previously available in English, the essays appear in English for the first time, having been expertly translated by Marczyk. Read together as a corpus of literature confronting historic antisemitism in Poland, the essays critically examine the causes and consequences of Europe's oldest and most pernicious form of hatred in Polish society. The East European Radical Right in the Political Process" / Michael Minkenberg (ed.). London: Routledge, 2015. ISBN: 978-1-13-883183-4 N2 - Since the 1980s, political scientists have been examining radical right parties and movements with an increasing intensity. They are mostly focused on the electoral outcomes, typically employing two types of explanations for societal and electoral support: demand-side approaches (an analysis of how changes in voters' attitudes affect the support for these parties [1]) and supply-side approaches (which examines how contextual and structural factors can facilitate or deter the radical right's electoral success [2]). Minkenberg's work distinguishes itself from existing publications by taking on a different perspective. First, in contrast to most comparative studies of the radical right, it examines not only political parties and elections, but focuses on the dynamism they introduce to the political process. Second, the book contains a comparative approach to the study of the radical right in Eastern Europe, which generally receives less scholarly consideration in comparison to Western Europe.
