TY - JOUR A1 - Riedel, Rafał T1 - Review: "Capitalism from Outside? Economic Cultures in Eastern Europe after 1989" / Violetta Zentai, János Mátyás Kovács (ed.). Budapest: Central European University Press, 2012. ISBN: 978-615-5211-31-1 N2 - The volume Capitalism from Outside? Economic Cultures in Eastern Europe after 1989, edited by Janos Matyas Kovacs and Violetta Zentai, offers a set of coordinated case studies from Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) and South Eastern Europe (SEE), treated as two sub-regions (the Visegrad group and the Balkans). The publication is a result of the long-lasting co-operation of the contributing authors, predominantly in the form of research projects such as DIOSCURI (Eastern Enlargement – Western Enlargement: Cultural Encounters in the European Economy) or earlier ACCESS (After the Accession. The Socio-Economic Cultures of Eastern Europe in the Enlarged Union: An Asset or a Liability?). The authors provide empirical insights into the cultural history of CEE and SEE economies and societies from the past two decades. The applied methodological pluralism, including large value surveys, in-depth interviews, and others, was possible and necessary at the crossroads of anthropology and economics, enriching the scientific discourse with valuable perspectives. Warszawa: WUW, 2015. ISBN: 978-83-235-1936-2 N2 - This monograph is one of a series of publications covering the Polish social (or, broader, humanist) thought in the 19th and 20th century, with particular emphasis on the reflection on concepts such as state, society, nation, and identity. It is salient to read and re-discover Zygmunt Balicki, taking into account his wide scope of interest and the significant impact he had on modern political thought in Poland. Balicki was one of the most influential ideologists of Polish nationalism at the turn of the 19th and the 20th century. Alongside Roman Dmowski or Ludwig Popławski, he was also an active politician leaving a remarkable footprint on the further development of nationalist ideas as well as of Polish inter-war politics (even though he died in 1916 – two years before Poland regained independence) Y1 - 2018 U6 - http://nbn-resolving.de/urn/resolver.pl?urn:nbn:de:kobv:521-opus4-8266 ER - TY - JOUR A1 - Riedel, Rafał T1 - Review: "The Politics of Memory in Post-Authoritarian Transitions, vol. I: Case Studies, and vol. II: Comparative Analysis" / Joanna Marszałek-Kawa, Joanna Piechowiak-Lamparska, Anna Ratke-Majewska, Patryk Wawrzyński (ed.). Newcastle upon Tyne: Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 2017. ISBN: 978-1-4438-1706-6 N2 - The Politics of Memory in Post-Authoritarian Transitions consists of two volumes, the first one covering six case studies, edited by Joanna Marszałek-Kawa, Joanna Piechowiak-Lamparska, Patryk Wawrzyński, Anna Ratke-Majewska, and the second one focussing on comparative analysis, edited by Joanna Marszałek-Kawa, Patryk Wawrzyński and Anna Ratke-Majewska. The two volumes constitute one entity, being the result of a research project funded by Narodowe Centrum Nauki (i.e. the Polish National Centre for Science) and should, therefore, be reviewed together. The general objective of the whole research project is to identify the role of remembrance narratives in the process of the reconstruction of state and society. This overarching goal is tackled in two research problems: one deals with the question as to what degree new remembrance narratives were used in the transition period, and the other one addresses the issue of the particular models of politics of memory that were used to construct a new political identity during the transformation. The main hypothesis is formulated as a statement about the universality of the model of transition from an authoritarian to a democratic system at the level of the state's usage of remembrance policies to create a new political identity for society. New York: Routledge, 2017. ISBN: 9781138614826 N2 - The volume Populist Political Communication in Europe, edited by a group of prominent scholars representing various disciplines, including sociology, political science, media and communication studies, consisting of Toril Aalberg, Frank Esser, Carsten Reinemann, Jesper Stromback, and Claes H. de Vreese, is the first one in the newly established series Routledge Research in Communication Studies. It comes as no surprise that the first position in this series is dedicated to populism, which has recently become the dominating force in European politics. This collection covers twenty-four countries in case studies, analysing new developments in and contributing to the knowledge about three inter-related areas within populist political communication: populist actors as communicators, the media and populism, and citizens and populism.
