<title language="deu">Europäisierung kollektiver Erinnerung.
The present master’s thesis discusses the issue of Europeanization of collective memory both from an empirical and theoretical point of view. Its aim is twofold: On the one hand, it tries to deliver an empirical verification of the question, if and in how far a Europeanization of collective memory can be observed. On the other hand, based on the results of the empirical analysis, it wishes to contribute to the theoretical understanding and conception of this phenomenon. Giv-en the frequent mention of a division of Europe into a Western and Eastern sphere of collective remembrance regarding National Socialism and the period of Soviet hegemony, the analysis will be conducted on case studies both from Germany and Poland dealing with one of those topics. These case studies are the Buchenwald Memorial and the Memorial Museum in der “Runden Ecke” in Germany as well as the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum and the European Solidarity Centre in Poland. In the scope of this paper, Europeanization of collective memory is understood as an increase in transnational interdependences and references between collective memories. In practice, this process will be analysed regarding a Europeanization or European momentum of the stakeholders involved, the funding, the objective and self-image as well as the historical narrative of the above-mentioned institutions. As a result of the analysis, tendencies of Europeanization can be shown with regard to all four aspects. Therefore, the author of this pa-per proposes to discuss the process of Europeanization henceforth not only in terms of historical narratives, as has been done so far, but also in terms of the collectives behind that narrative.

<title language="deu">Aktive Rezipienten im ostdeutschen Systemwandel, Eine qualitative Leserbriefstudie im Zeitraum 1989 - 1991</title>
<title language="eng">Active media consumer in the East German system change, a qualitative reader letter study in the period 1989 - 1991</title>
The study examines the phenomenon of a remarkable writing initiative of East German media consumer during the radical system change between October 1989 and December 1991. Hundreds of thousands of letters were sent to newspapers which formerly were state-supporting media, such as "Neues Deutschland" (organ of the Central Committee of the German Socialist Unity Party - SED), or "junge Welt" (central organ of the Free German Youth - FDJ), as well as to the German television and broadcast services of the GDR, and to local (district) newspapers, e.g. "Berliner Zeitung". This included petitions, proclamations, appeals, pleas, opinion declarations and enquiries. The goal of the study was to delve into, clarify, and understand this one-time-in-history phenomenon. The method used was a random selection of 6667 unabridged and original letters from the archives, but 4727 actually used. The study analysed the process of writing in its variety, shape and meaning for the individual, and in its meaning for the processes of social change in general. Along with that, a systematic quantitative content analysis was applied, and a comparison was made with studies from the time before the radical system change. The investigation of the coping processes however was accomplished by the qualitative approach of the "Grounded Theory". The results made it clear, that the population of the GDR, with their writing initiative, were involved in the development of a democratic public "from the populace". Up to 1990 the events in the country were in the center of their interest. From middle of 1990 (currency, economic and social union) topics of everyday life and the management of the re-orientation came to the fore of the interest. Coevally different types of coping showed for the treatment of the radical change situation. Two fundamental types formed thereby, one as "open" to the system opening and one "conservative" type. The latter was more likely to conserve the GDR or parts of it. The efforts of adaption are to be characterized as assimilating and accomodating. Concrete types of coping with the process of the radical change situation could be differentiated in: "travel passengers", "refusers", "beneficiaries", "active everyday-life-organizationers" "resistants/critics" and "Regressioners". The coping processes are described in a general, dynamic processing model and in detail.
