Migration is presented not only as a consequence of the conflict, but also as a potential resource for post-war reconstruction and socio-economic modernisation. The Herford Synagogue is the first and, to the present day, the only rebuilt synagogue in post-war Germany to follow the form of its historical original building, at least with regard to the floor plan and the outer shell. This thesis examines the unique architectural characteristics of the destroyed synagogue from 1852 (in its modified Neo-Gothic form of 1892/93) and its reconstruction of 2010 and presents the differences and similarities of the two buildings in detail. It examines the meanings and values that are attributed to the synagogue in the context of current debates regarding remembrance culture and Jewish architectural heritage, how the Jewish community reached the decision to build a new synagogue following the design of the original building and the question why, in contrast to the currently planned historical reconstruction of the Bornplatz Synagogue in Hamburg, the reconstruction of Herford Synagogue did not spark a widespread public and scientific debate. State of research: The history of the Jewish community and its synagogue buildings is relatively well researched. However, earlier publications mostly concentrate on depicting the Jewish people of Herford and their fates. While a few essays address the building history of the old synagogue and the circumstances of its destruction during the November pogrom in 1938, to this day, the reconstructed synagogue has barely been the subject of scientific research. The Jewish community of Herford-Detmold itself published a book about the inauguration of the synagogue, which includes several personal texts from members of the community and numerous pictures from the time of construction. Otherwise, only one scientific article in an anthology about synagogues in North Rhine-Westphalia deals with the newly built synagogue of 2010. To the present day, an extensive comparison regarding the building typology of the destroyed and the reconstructed synagogue and a classification in terms of conservation theory and remembrance culture in the light of current debates and synagogue projects have not yet been carried out. Sources: The sources used for this thesis can be classified into three categories: firstly, publications regarding the history of the Jewish community in Herford and its synagogue buildings, synagogue architecture in general in around 1900 and from 2000 and the culture of remembrance and architectural concepts of reconstruction; secondly, archive documents and records (historical plans and photographs, an eyewitness account, compensation and restitution files, historical and contemporary newspaper reports) in the collections of several archives as well as files from the Jewish community of Herford-Detmold regarding the planning and building phase; and thirdly, personal expert interviews with selected individuals involved in the construction of the new synagogue. Methodology: The thesis is opened with the compact history of the Jewish community in Herford, focusing on its synagogue buildings. The development of the Jewish community from its beginnings to the building and destruction of the synagogue in the 19th and 20th centuries and right up to the subsequent efforts to build a new synagogue starting in the 1990s is retraced using archival documents, files and documents from the Jewish community and statements from the interviewed individuals. This is followed by a comparative analysis of the original building and the reconstructed synagogue based on plans, photographs and personal observations. Next, concepts of remembrance culture and debates regarding the reconstruction of synagogues are analysed. In the final chapter, which includes the case study of the Herford Synagogue, the decision-making process is retraced with the help of semi-narrative and semi-structured expert interviews. Local and national news reports from the construction phase of the new synagogue and mentions in academic publications are used to analyse the media and academic response to the new building and its design, as well as the reasons for the lack of debate. Outcomes of the thesis: As the first extensive academic analysis of the reconstructed Herford Synagogue, this thesis closes the research gap of a systematic comparison between the destroyed and the new synagogue. It shows that both the Herford Synagogue destroyed in 1938 in its Neo-Gothic design and its reconstructed synagogue of 2010, which is more or less true to the original building, are typologically exceptional sacred buildings. The reconstructed synagogue performs several functions, which are reflected in its hybrid architectural form: It unites both the commemoration and remembrance of an annihilated community and a new beginning and selfconfidence of a newly formed Jewish community. The small size of the Herford community, short decision-making paths, personal relationships of the involved parties and a planning phase dating all the way back to the 1990s are some of the reasons why the reconstructed synagogue was hardly noticed outside of Herford and its surroundings.}, language = {de} } @misc{Muehler2010, type = {Master Thesis}, author = {M{\"u}hler, Birgit}, title = {Schloss Frohburg / Sachsen. The barns are a valuable testimony to medieval methods of construction, but are often not recognised as a cultural heritage worth preserving. In addition, the barns are losing their purpose due to vanishing small-scale farming and are falling into decay. The conversion of barns is an opportunity to give them a new purpose. This can help to increase the general recognition of the barns and preserve the built heritage along with the related intangible cultural heritage. The objective of this master's thesis was first to find out which types of conversion are practised in order to then analyse which of these conversion concepts are particularly sustainable and compatible with the principles of heritage conservation. This involved also considering ecological, economic, social and cultural aspects. In order to answer the research questions, a field study was conducted in a designated area, which included interviews with barn owners, a questionnaire and on-site research. The data collected in this way was summarised, visualised and analysed. It was discovered that the barns had largely been converted in a way that was appropriate for historical monuments and that the concepts cover many aspects of the overall notion of sustainability. What was surprising, however, was that fewer concepts than expected include regular use by or involvement of the local population. Plus, most of the converted barns are run by people who are not originally from the area. In order to strengthen the local population's identification with the barn and to enhance the valuation of the barn as cultural heritage, the local population should play a central role in the use or reuse of the barns, as they are the heirs and owners of this cultural heritage.}, language = {de} } @techreport{Hennig2025, type = {Working Paper}, author = {Hennig, Anja}, title = {Contested River Politics in Europe: The Impact of Polish and German Oder River Protection Networks (1989 - 2024)}, publisher = {Europa-Universit{\"a}t Viadrina}, address = {Frankfurt (Oder)}, issn = {2628-5460}, doi = {10.11584/IFES.4}, url = {http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:kobv:521-opus4-14302}, pages = {32 Seiten}, year = {2025}, abstract = {This paper examines how opposition from within Polish and German civil society has established itself, since 1989, in response to national and bi-national river policies concerning the Oder River. Due to its long history as a political border, the Oder has remained one of the most pristine rivers in Europe. Yet, its shallow riverbed makes it particularly vulnerable to ice jams as well as to flooding and low water levels. The Oder has thus also become a "seismograph" of climate change in the face of global warming. Given the diverging river policy interests concerning economic development measures and environmental renaturation, the paper analyses the dynamics between transnational, Oder-related politics and the actions of Oder protection alliances emerging from civil society. The guiding question investigates the impact which activities of environmental NGOs have had on agenda-setting, on the construction of their own organisational structures, and on influencing political outcomes, as of now. On a theoretical level, the paper argues that two superordinate points of contention determine the success of environmental activism: firstly, the antagonism between "green and growth", which often prioritises economic considerations over nature conservation; and, secondly, the political divide between right-wing populist and left-green positions (the GALTAN cleavage). Conceptually, the paper contributes to the establishment of river politics as a new transdisciplinary field of political analysis.
