Technē Logos, Care and the (Neg) Anthropocene The second annual conference of the European Culture and Technology Laboratory

The second ECT Lab+ annual conference took place in the East Quad building of the Grangegorman campus of TU Dublin in January 2023 and this publication is an edited collection of papers, keynotes, and artistic interventions that were delivered over the three days of the conference. As the first iteration of the conference was forced to be held online due to the public health restrictions of the Covid-19 pandemic, this was the first annual conference to take place in person. A total of 40 speakers presented work over the course of the conference. Despite the return to in-vivo modalities, the conference was not a return to a pre-pandemic normality. Instead, the conference occurred in the shadow of the pandemic both in form and content. Building on the success of the integrated format from the previous conference the 50+ daily in-person delegates were joined by an average of 20+ online delegates each day. Each format has its advantages and disadvantages, which have been extensively rehearsed in the past few years.1 The conference was privileged to have Luke Clancy from Culture File on RTÉ radio broadcast a selection of interviews with delegates. These can be accessed on rte.ie as podcasts. Given that the explicit goal of the ECT Lab+ is to foster lasting research relationships, it is vital that the community fosters strong connections both in person and online.

Similarly, the presence of the pandemic can be seen in the thematic for the conference. Where the first conference, explicitly inspired by the work of Bernard Stiegler, sought to discuss the social impact of contemporary technologies, the second conference deliberately inserted concerns of care into these debates. This also mirrors the later development of the question of care within Stiegler’s last publications and points to the development of care as a legacy of Stiegler’s thought.

Welcome to GPEA PS 2022

Each year the Polytechnic Summit assembles leaders, influencers and contributors who shape the future of polytechnic education. The Polytechnic Summit provides a forum to enable opportunities for collaboration and partnerships and for participants to focus on innovation in curriculum and pedagogy, to share best practices in active and applied learning, and discuss practice-based research to enhance student learning.

This year a view on the aspects of applied research will be added. How to conduct research in a teaching first environment and make use of this. Which characteristics of applied research are important to be used in teaching and vice versa? The Summit will – once again - also provide an opportunity to examine the challenges and opportunities presented by COVID-19 and will offer us all an opportunity to explore the ways in which we can collaborate more effectively using our new-found virtual engagement skills and prepare for a hybrid future.

PS2022 Themes: Design (Programmes, Curriculum, Organisation);Practice-Based Learning;Applied Research; Employability and Graduate Skills; Internationalisation, Global Teaching & Collaboration and Sustainability Theme.

Designing for Inclusiveness in EdTech Projects: the Case of the European University of Technology’s XR VR Team

This paper will present the case of the XR VR project team within the European University of Technology (EUt+). The team is tasked with developing an extended reality (XR) virtual reality (VR) approach to help students and staff overcome language and cultural barriers in international mobility. The aim of the project ultimately is to enhance the experience of physical student mobility and to ensure international opportunities for students are more inclusive. As research on the problem is still in progress, the team found themselves constructing their own understanding of designing for inclusiveness in the project. This paper presents the case through a qualitative case study methodology involving reflective journals of project participants, a focus group discussion and documentary analysis connected to the project. The findings from the study show how the understanding of ‘inclusiveness’ is constructed through social interactions and consequently how designing for inclusiveness in digital projects in education is a journey influenced by evolving meanings. Our study makes important contributions to the students with disability literature and technology in education literature.

Speculative Enquiries: The third annual conference of the European Culture and Technology Laboratory

The third annual conference of the ECT Lab+ was held over three days in November 2023 in Limassol at the Media Arts & Design Research Lab (MADLab), Cyprus University of Technology. The conference brought together experts from the Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences, Technology, and other fields to explore ways of enquiry that enrich (non-)positivist ways of knowing as well as post-structuralist critique towards them. Given the political, representative and epistemic crises of the current times, there is a need for transdisciplinary responses to overcome siloed thinking of academic fields of study and offer solutions by revisiting questions of speculation as the basis of science, engineering, education, design and the arts. Under the title Speculative Enquiries: Aesthetic, Ethical, and Epistemic Technologies, the conference reflected on speculation as an analytical, imaginative, political and experimental means and intended to inspire the production of artifacts (engineering, design, arts, crafts) to get beyond the current epistemic Krisis.

1st EUt+ International Conference on Languages

Language has the ability to impact and transform while itself being impacted and transformed. It is a core part of the EUT+, and the conference sought to create dialogue, generate new knowledge and understanding, research, and awareness on language and various themes relating to languages. Especially regarding topics such as intercultural communication, multiculturalism, European values and post colonialism. European integration and globalization have had extensive impact on the education systems of the EU member states. Tertiary institutions have implemented new study programs, or have even restructured their degrees to align with European integration and values. Methods of teaching and modes of language learning have also developed and have increasingly become ethnically and culturally diverse and focused. At the same language education and approaches may still reflect European values and positions and may not take language and culture in postcolonial and indigenous countries, groups and areas into consideration. Discourse on languages, learning, teaching and administrative practices may afford valuable insights in the above points.

The conference took place in an interdisciplinary environment that afforded the unique opportunity of persons from all area of tertiary education to share and discuss their experiences, ideas and research relating to language and its interplay with intercultural communication, European values and post colonialism. Participants had the possibility to forge contacts, network, and facilitate partnerships across the EUT+ campuses. This volume provides an impression of the first international EUt+ language conference on ‘Inter/Multiculturalism in a Post Colonial Era: Languages and European Values’ hosted by University of Applied Sciences Darmstadt. Thirteen contributions invite you to experiences, ideas and research findings related to language and its interaction with intercultural communication and European values.

Language has to power to bind us or divide us. Language enables us to cooperate with each other or impede each other. Through language, we are able to be the human beings we are today, hold our value systems dear and accomplish all that we have done over millennia. This volume provides an impression of the first international EUt+ language conference on ‘Inter/Multiculturalism in a Post Colonial Era: Languages and European Values’ hosted by University of Applied Sciences Darmstadt. Thirteen contributions invite you to experiences, ideas and research findings related to language and its interaction with intercultural communication, European values and post-colonialism.

Irish Food History: A Companion

Irish Food History: A Companion provides the most comprehensive collection of information to date on this topic. It includes twenty-eight chapters from experts in the fields of archaeology, history, mythology, linguistics, literature, folklore, Irish studies, food studies, beverage studies, gastronomy, and culinary history, which apply the latest thinking and scholarship to the history of Irish food from the earliest inhabitants through to the twenty-first century. The individual chapters bring the reader on a journey from prehistory and the Ice Ages in Ireland through to the arrival of fisher-gatherers, early farmers, the introduction of livestock, cultivation of crops and development of cooking technologies, to the setting up of schools of poetry, medicine, and music in the early Medieval period. Personal correspondences, diaries, literature, and linguistic analysis assist in charting the rise in the social and nutritional importance of the potato from its arrival in the sixteenth century to the ensuing calamity, the Great Famine of 1845–52. Late-nineteenth century technological changes modernised food production and society at large, and from the early decades of the twentieth century Ireland adopted this modernity in all its nuanced facets, from the proliferation of restaurants, hotels, tourism, to rural electrification, televisions and the rise in consumerism and globalisation.

Divided into six sections with a comprehensive Introduction by the editors Máirtín Mac Con Iomaire and Dorothy Cashman, and a Foreword by James Kelly, the collection augments previous publications, providing a worthwhile introduction to both the novice and the established researcher to numerous aspects of Irish food history and aims to ‘whet the appetite’ for more in-depth research into facets of our culinary past, both ancient and more recent. The everchanging dynamic nature of foodways means that the various contents and contexts of today’s meals, fashioned significantly by present-day issues such as war and climate change, shape tomorrow’s food history. This book is being uploaded one section at a time by EUT+ Academic Press, commencing in December 2023 and the whole book will also be published in conjunction with the Royal Irish Academy in Summer 2024.

Technē Logos and the (Neg)anthropocene - The first annual conference of the European Culture and Technology Laboratory

The European Culture and Technology Lab (ECT Lab+) is part of the European University of Technology (EUt+) which commenced in 2020 and is funded by the European Universities Initiative. The ECT Lab+ poses questions about the relation between culture and technology, the emerging environments (or milieux) of technology which are cultural, cosmological, technical, social, economic, and political. The emerging environment could be considered as a study of evolution, a history of technical organs, this we can term a general organology. The ECT Lab+ brings together researchers who are interested in the impacts of technology on society, these impacts can be both positive and negative; this we can term a pharmacology. Following on from the recent material turn in philosophy of technology, the ECT Lab+ conceives of technology as part and parcel of the process and practices of becoming human in the world. Hence the title of the ECT Lab+ reflects the positioning of technology within a culture, acknowledging that technology is not built in a vacuum but in and for society. The second aspect of the cultural environment of technology stems from the philosophical positioning of technics, technē and technology within their cultural locality or milieu. The ECT Lab+, therefore, encourages research which recognises the localised and situated knowledge contexts of technological innovation. The ECT Lab+ acts as a metastable structure, which is akin to supersaturation, a crystallising that can occur in relation around certain thematics, for example Technological Foresight and responsibility or epistemology, ethics and artificial intelligence. The ECT Lab+ takes into account the instability of the milieu (locality) and allows for the undecidability, contingency or indeterminacy of the cultural environment of technology or technological tendencies.

Methods and Means for Registration, Measurement, Processing and Evaluation of Thermographic Information with Application in Systems for Medical Diagnostics and Ecology

Chapter 1. General principles in methods and means for recording, measuring and processing thermographic information. Applications of thermography, mainly in the fields of medicine and ecology, are presented. Problems related to the accuracy of measurement with an infrared camera are discussed. External (Atmosphere, Physical characteristics of body coverings, Geometric factors, Environment, Infrared characteristics of the object under study and Behavioral factors) and internal (Stressor, Blood circulation, Physical activity, Sweating, etc.) factors that affect the accuracy of measurement are described. The causes leading to errors in thermographic measurements are analyzed, the main ones being: water vapor, ozone and carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. An analysis is made of the methods and means of recording, measuring, processing and evaluating thermographic information with applications directed to the fields of medical diagnostics and ecology. Methods of diagnosis by analysis of data provided by the thermal camera are discussed. An approach using a system of small satellites and specialized drones for environmental monitoring is proposed. The analysis shows the relevance and wide application of thermography in fields such as medicine, ecology, industry and many others. The existing methods and tools presented in the literature poorly cover those proposed in the monograph. Based on the findings, this monograph proposes to develop the following new methods and tools in the field of thermography:

1. Development of methods and tools for recording, measuring, processing and evaluating thermographic information for application in medical diagnostic systems.

2. Development of methods and means for recording, measuring, processing and evaluating thermographic information for application in environmental systems.

Chapter 2. Development of methods and means for recording, measuring, processing and evaluation of thermographic information for application in medical diagnostic systems.

The influence of mental workload on deviations in infrared thermography of the human face is investigated. A methodology has been developed whereby thermographic imaging of the change in skin surface temperature of specific areas of the human face allows the recording of the change in brain activity. It has been applied in reliable mechanisms to assess the impact of various thought processes on the mind and hence on the physiological responses of the human body. The proposed methodologies would contribute to the improvement of diagnostics using biofeedback systems.

Chapter 3. Development of methods and tools for recording, measuring, processing and evaluation of thermographic information for application in ecological systems.

1. A model using multiple sensors to measure different objects or areas is proposed. This allows to reduce the measurement error of the same area of the object in question. The reduction of the variance of the resulting signal when the number of independently measuring sensors increases is calculated.

2. A block diagram of a module for non-contact surface temperature measurement of distributed objects in a thermal zone within a room in a building is developed. The module has been designed and integrated as part of a larger building energy efficiency, monitoring and management system. Measurement of several zones of interest simultaneously is implemented in order to search for connections related to cooling or heating.

3. An optoelectronic system model has been developed for sensing passing objects, in particular vehicles. Some of the problems and their corresponding solutions in creating a prototype system for counting objects based on optical emission are described. Experimental research related to the counting of cars for the purpose of traffic counting its reduction is conducted.

4. A methodology has been developed to cover large areas and many objects using infrared thermography to detect objects with temperatures significantly

Working with the Intercultural Competence in Higher Education as a Path Towards Inclusion: a Practical Example from EUT+a Path Towards Inclusion: a Practical Example from EUt+

The UNESCO defines the concept of interculturality as “the existence and equitable interaction of diverse cultures and the possibility of generating shared cultural expressions through dialogue and mutual respect,” according to the article 4.8 of the Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions.3 A derivative of this concept would be ntercultural awareness,” which can be defined as the conscious understanding, free of clash, of he fact that people from different cultures have different values. In contrast to interculturality, which accepts and assimilates ways of living and thinking from different cultures, multiculturality simply refers to juxtaposed cultures that coexist in a single environment, though not exposed to partial assimilations among them.

This paper focuses on a recent experience carried out within the EUT+ frame, a pilot project based on interculturality and German as a foreign language that could be transferred to the rest of partners on a larger scale in the future. Entitled “DACADU: Interkulturelles Projekt,” the project has included students of German of three different universities (Darmstad, Dublin and Cartagena) with language levels ranging from A1 to C1. The initiative is inspired in a “logbook” recently published by the Bundeszentrale für Politische Bildung, an official organism that works for the effective integration of migrants in Germany. The logbook teaches young migrants not only through language, but also by means of allowing the two cultures of the participants (the one left behind, and the new one) blend and interact with the help of a variety of activities that encourage self-reflection, discussion, and language awareness itself.

Developed during the second term of the 2021-2022 academic year, this paper discusses the different phases of the project, with special attention to: a) the nature of the tasks/topics assigned and the materials produced; b) the sequencing of the project; c) the evaluation tools designed, aimed both at measuring the degree of satisfaction among students and related issues (motivation, learning enhancement, raise of awareness), and the improvement in the acquisition of language and intercultural content. All in all, the experience provides a practical example of how to deal with inclusive practices in Higher Education through language learning and interculturality.

Rethinking Higher Education Models: Towards a New Education Paradigm for the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable DevelopmentParadigm for the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development

The United Nations 2030 Agenda unfolded a comprehensive package of Sustainable Development Goals that seek global cooperation, participation, and coordinated efforts to 2030 for the betterment of humanity within the ecological constraints of the planet. However, it has become evident that the agenda is very ambitious and afflicted by a lack of solid governance principles vital to ensuring the successful achievement of the goals and targets. This paper offers critical insights into the pivotal role of higher education in promoting and implementing the goals. We argue that there is a need to raise awareness of the goals and educate relevant stakeholders on how to coordinate their efforts to respond to the complexities associated with achieving sustainability. We find that higher education institutions are poised to play a more relevant and influential role, but to do so, they need to engage in a bold educational transformation process. Given that the achievement of the goals is predicated on collaboration between multiple actors, ranging from governments, businesses, non-governmental organisations, civil society, researchers, academics, and students, specific actions within higher education must focus on the circularity of the education model. Moreover, stakeholders need to work together to address the numerous failures associated with governance if they seek to achieve meaningful change and progress around sustainability issues. Therefore, we argue that HEIs need to rethink and reconsider their educational models to update their leadership role in achieving the 2030 Agenda and beyond.
