Search tips

Search tips

Searching or browsing on this platform covers both the bibliographic description of a publications in form of the metadata of documents and, if available, the full text.

In a basic search, multiple search terms are automatically linked with AND. This returns all results containing either of the entered search terms.
Example: The document contains comments finds documents containing either one, several or all of the search terms.

For a more specific search, it is recommended to link multiple search terms using the Boolean operators AND, OR, NOT:

AND: All search terms entered should appear in the document.
Example: The AND document AND contains AND comments finds documents containing all search terms, albeit not necessarily in the same order as the sorting of the search terms.

OR: Only one of the search terms should appear in the document. This function widens the search area and is useful when different designations exist for the same subject.
Examples: Bachelor OR Degree / Coach OR Trainer

NOT: This function has an excluding effect and can be used to limit the number of search results, as in documents in which one of the search terms occurs, the other is not contained.
Examples: Bachelor NOT Degree / Coach NOT Trainer

Boolean operators also work for advanced searches. These operators can be used to combine different search terms into a search query for more refined results. As an example, the below given search query returns all documents by the author ‘Doe‘ from the years 2024 and 2025:
Example:
Authors: Doe
Year: 2024 OR 2025

Placeholders or wildcards can be used if in doubt about the spelling of a search term, such as a name, or if a search needs to be extended, by using “*” and “?” as wildcards, even though it is not possible to use a wildcard at the beginning of a search term.
Example 1: energ* finds energy, energetic or energetics
Example 2: ma?or finds major, mayor, manor or maker
Example 3: organi? finds organic, organisational, organization and organisation, the latter in documents in all languages where this term is spelled in that way.

When searching for a phrase, double quotation marks are useful.
Example: "the document contains comments" finds documents containing this exact phrase.

Browsing
All publication on this platform are assigned to categories and can be shown grouped together in different collections. This allows the publications on the platform to be viewed sorted by year of publication, subject area or publication type, for example. An overview of the publications by individual authors is available in the publication lists collection.

How do I publish my work here?
Please click on the publication link on the start page.
First you are requested to choose a document type. Right beneath that you can upload your document files. Having done so you may click on "send". What follows now is the actual form. You have to fill in data about your publication here (so called metadata), which is used to describe your work in cataloges and other bibliographic directories. Describe the document you want to upload using the categories and fields on the publication form. Depending on the document type, some of these fields are mandatory and therefore have to be filled in. Please describe your document as clear as possible. Mandatory fields are for example:
  • the document type (must be choosen from a list)
  • the title of your publication and the language of the title
  • the abstract of the document
  • the publication date of your document (normally the day you publish it online)
  • the language of the document (must be choosen from a list)
  • the licence, under which you want to publish your document (must be choosen from a list)
If you are unsure what to fill in certain form fields, you can point the cursor on a field and an explaining help text will be shown.
After you have finished the form, all data will be displayed once again for a check-up and you then have three possibilities: you can correct them if necessary, add your document to a collection or simply safe it directly.

Note:
In oder to publish your work cookies have to be enabled in your web browser.
What's metadata?
Metadata can be defined as
  • data describing one or more resources or as
  • data associated with an object and describing it
Basically metadata is describing documents, objects or services and contains information about their content, structure or form. More abstractly metadata is a description of data or "data about data". Bibliographic data sets and catalog entries in library catalogs can be seen as a kind of metadata.

This repository is using metadata in the Dublin Core Metadata Element Set (short Dublin Core (DC)) which has fifteen basic elements. Dublin Core is the result of international efforts to reach a collective consensus in describing electronic objects (in the broadest sense). The Library of Congress (LoC), the Online Cataloging Library Center (OCLC) and several national libraries are dealing with Dublin Core in many projects and are close to introduce the system respectively.

In most cases this is no problem. Please ensure in any case, if your publisher allows a parallel publication! To do that you can use the Open Policy Finder.
Authors can choose which terms of use must be regarded for their publication. These terms are defined in a license. This repository supports different licenses, from which you can choose one (i.e. Creative Commons Licenses/).
