Adhesive bonding is the preferred bonding method for a lot of different application because of is particularities. As an example, adhesive bonding does not require to drill holes like for riveting or screwing. Thin and fragile material as well as of different arts can be successfully joined using adhesives. Moreover, adhesive bonding provides a uniform load distribution within the bonding joint during mechanical load. For these reasons, adhesive bonding should be used systemically for joining fiber reinforced polymers, since the fibers would be damaged by drilled holes. The mechanical properties of the parts given by the fibers would then remain. The problem is that it is very difficult to separate adhesively bonded structures. The first layer of fibers is often damaged by rough mechanical separation, or the resin matrix is damaged because of high temperatures applied. For these reasons, fibers reinforced polymers are up to now still very often screwed or riveted. New adhesive systems that allow debonding of structural bonding joints are developed and investigated in this work. For this purpose, epoxide and polyurethane adhesive are modified with foaming agents that weaken the adhesive above their expansion temperature. These modified adhesive should keep properties as close as possible to the properties of the unmodified adhesives. The expansion temperature should be above the upper service temperature of the adhesive as far as possible but also below the limit of the thermal stability of the substrates. This is contradictory and the window of temperature at which the expansion should take place is very narrow. In a second method, a commercial electrically disbonding adhesive is used in combination with fiber reinforced polymer substrates. This adhesive can be electrically disbonded by applying a voltage at the terminals of the adhesive. Therefore, electrically conductive substrates are necessary and the metallization of the fiber reinforced polymer substrates is investigated.
The oxy-fuel combustion process with subsequent CO2 storage has received attention as a promising technology for capturing CO2 from fossil fuel power plants. Recent progress in understanding pulverized coal combustion under oxy-fired conditions is attributable in part to studies performed at laboratory bench-scale. Previous investigations have underlined some significant differences between conventional air-fired and oxy-fired combustion with regard to temperature, heat flux distribution, and pollutant emissions. While most studies provide information on the impacts of O2 concentration in the feed gas, the impact of burner configuration and operating settings on oxy-coal combustion have been investigated by only a handful of studies. The present study addresses the impact of oxy-fired conditions on the chemistry and dynamics of pulverized coal flames generated by a staged feed-gas burner operating with pre-dried lignite. Investigations were carried out in a newly constructed test facility where the combustion takes place in a horizontal up-fired furnace with a rated capacity of 0.40 MWth. Since the focus of this work is on adapting oxy-fuel combustion techniques to existing furnaces, great emphasis is placed on maintaining flame temperatures and heat transfer similar to that of conventional air combustion. The strategy adopted to investigate the impacts of burner settings is divided into theoretical and experimental investigations. In the theoretical study, the combustion-related parameters are calculated based on thermodynamic balances and act as a background for the definition of some important operating settings. Non-reacting flow simulations which include the burner and part of the furnace are performed using a CFD commercial code aimed at a qualitative evaluation of feed gas distribution and swirl strength on the flow pattern formed in the near burner region. These predictions assist in the interpretation of the experimental data and in the calculation of the swirl number at the exit of the burner. During the experimental investigations, the characteristics of diffusion flames were first investigated in a parametric study to evaluate the impact of secondary swirl numbers at three levels and secondary/tertiary flow ratios on the overall combustion performance. The second part of the test program involved detailed in-flame measurements for selected flames. Measurements of local gas temperature, gas species concentrations, and radiative heat flux were performed with standard water-cooled probes with special focus on the near burner region. Theoretical and experimental studies are also carried out under air-fired conditions and used as a benchmark throughout this study. The overall O2 fraction upstream of the burner was kept at 31 vol% and was defined with basis on a similar adiabatic flame temperature as air-firing. Flame stabilization was shown to be strongly dependent on the O2 fraction of the primary stream, feed gas distribution between the secondary and tertiary registers, and strength of the secondary swirl. Type-1 flames operating at a stoichiometric ratio of 1.17 were generated under air-fired and oxy-fired conditions and investigated in detail. Detailed flow pattern and flame structure studies show evidence of radial flame stratification consistent with gradual O2 admixing to the central fuel jet. Increasing the swirl number and the secondary/tertiary flow ratio enhances the mixing of coal particles and increases the temperatures close to burner. Much lower temperatures on the flame axis are observed under oxy-fired conditions. In the same region, higher CO concentrations were also observed, possibly as a result of CO2 dissociation and/or gasification reactions by water vapor and CO2 which contribute to lower temperatures. Very low CO concentration at the furnace exit and high particle burnout indicate that oxy-fired conditions are not an obstacle to achieving a high combustion efficiency for type-1 flames. Although SO2 concentrations were higher under oxy-fired conditions, the emission rates were very similar, indicating that SO2 emissions are exclusively dependent on the sulfur content of the coal. Experimental data obtained from the parametric study and in-flame measurements suggest great potential for NO abatement through flame aerodynamics for oxy-coal combustion. The experiments demonstrate that feed gas staging in a burner is an effective technique for improving the flame stratification in fuel-rich and fuel-lean zones. In particular, a combination of high swirl and high secondary/tertiary flow ratio results in significant NO reduction.
This thesis addresses fundamental physical processes which take place at the surface region of a target during and after the interaction with ultra-short laser pulses. The general goal is to bring together different phenomena and discuss the non-equilibrium nature of the interaction of femtosecond laser pulses (tp < 100 fs) with various materials, in particular dielectrics and semiconductors. Different experiments, using various techniques, are designed to explore the basic mechanisms of laser ionization, defect creation, electron-lattice energetic transfer, charged particles desorption, optical breakdown, phase transformations and surface morphological changes. Such processes are shown to depend strongly on the laser intensity. Thus, they are analyzed for intensities over four orders of magnitude (10^11-10^14 W/cm2), around the surface optical breakdown (damage) threshold intensity. First, experimental studies using time-of-flight mass spectrometry indicate that non-resonant intense ultra-short laser pulses can efficiently ionize a dielectric (semiconducting) material leading to emission of electrons as well as charged particles, i.e. atomic ions and large clusters, and neutral particles. Under these irradiation conditions, the ionization processes can be at best described by multiphoton ionization and ionization at defects sites. The structural defects provide the means for an increased positive ion desorption rate. A multiple pulse incubation effect in the ion yield can be well related with the reduction of the multi-pulse damage threshold with increasing intensity. Following the initial electron excitation and emission, positive ions are released from the surface in a substantial amount with high ion velocities indicative of a localized microscopic electrostatic expulsion. With increasing intensity, the amount of ions gets larger and larger and their velocity distribution exhibits a bimodal structure. Also, in these conditions, negative ions are detected. The ion desorption can arise from a combination of a localized electrostatic repulsion (macroscopic Coulomb explosion) and a thermal ‘explosive’ mechanism. The later becomes more important with increasing intensity. The very fast energy input and particle emission result in a transient perturbation and deformation of the target lattice. Using pump-probe experiments the temporal evolution of lattice dynamics can be analyzed upon single-pulse excitation for many different target materials. This deformation is indicated to be a material characteristic. It is associated with the generation of transient defects in dielectrics or fast phase transitions in semiconductors and metals. Therefore, it could well give estimates of lifetime of transient defect states or electron-phonon relaxation times. At last the surface morphology after ablation is analyzed, with emphasis on the laser-induced surface periodic patterns (ripples). The patterns observed appear to be very different from the ‘classical’ ripples formed after long pulse ablation. They can have periods much smaller than the incident wavelength and are rather insensitive to the variation of the laser wavelength and angle of incidence. We show that control factors are laser beam polarization and the irradiation dose. Additionally, the patterns exhibit features pointing toward a chaotic origin. Their possible formation mechanism is likely linked with the non-equilibrium nature of the interaction.
Implementation of End-of-Life Vehicle’s Recycling for Developing Countries: Case Study, Mexico
(2008)
Currently, the Directive 2000/53/EC regulates the ELV management in 27 countries in Europe, and for the forthcoming years, more accession countries are foreseen. Since, the international nature of automotive industry, the Directive has affected industries beyond the EU. Hence, countries with important national-based automotive industry are moving towards the accomplishment of this legislation, in order to keep their competitiveness in European markets. The ELV chain in the EU is a complex system, which involves several commercial relationships between different sectors. The generation of ELV in the EU-15 was around 11.4 million units in 2005. The total number of ELV generated, considering the accessing countries, is still unknown. The number of treated ELV in the EU-15 was 7.7 million units. There are some obstacles to be overcome by ELV management already in implementation in the EU. The main difficulties are related to the reluctance of car-manufacture industry to implement Directive’s provisions related to: ban of use of specific substances in automotive applications, and about recycling quotas. Another obstacle is the export of ELV from the EU, which represents a loss in input material for the system. The case of the USA, regarding the ELV management, has very different connotations than the implemented system in the EU. The current ELV management in the USA does not have specific regulations regarding the collection and recycling of ELV. The structure of the ELV chain in the USA is similar to its counterpart in the EU. The main difference lies in dismantling and post-shredder sectors. The 80% of dismantling industry is composed of salvage/scrap yards performing no-standardized operations, and the remaining 20% is represented by high value parts dismantlers. One special feature of the system is the classification of ASR as no-hazardous waste which generates almost no incentives for further treatment. The current system of ELV management in the USA works with relative efficiency. However, there are still items to be improved, e.g. poor dismantling practices in a big number of dismantling facilities (scrap yards), use of hazardous materials in car-manufacture, disposal of ASR as non-hazardous waste, scrap tyres, etc. The ELV problem has different connotation in developing countries like Mexico, than in industrialized countries. Problems, like illegal introduction of used cars from the USA to Mexico and poor practices in the management of ELV, affect the Mexican economy, environment and society. In Mexico, there exists no specific legislation to regulate the Management of ELV. This kind of product, at its End-of-Life stage and wastes generated by its treatment, has been ruled by general laws before the year 2004. More recently a semi-specific law has been addressed to solid wastes, the LGPGIR. The structure of ELV chain in Mexico is similar to its counterpart in the USA and the EU, except for an additional stage. The present work depicts the available information about the number of Mexican operators, at every stage of ELV management. The described evidence presents a deficient management of ELV in Mexico. The current management allows a maximum recycling rate of 75%, which mainly corresponds to the ferrous fraction content in vehicles which enters to the management system. The present work develops a proposal for a suitable system to manage End-of-Life Vehicles (ELV) in a developing country, case study Mexico. This, is divided in three main parts. As a first step, the proposal estimates the future numbers of ELV generated in Mexico, which are estimated in a current ELV generation of around 687,000 vehicles by 2007, and by 2020 in the range of 1.1 to 1.3 million units per year. The second step is to propose a structure for the ELV chain in Mexico. The proposed structure describes the recommended operations, equipment and facilities’ configuration at every stage of the management. The third step of the proposal is the configuration of strategic facility network at every stage of ELV management in Mexico. The system is configured under assumption of three different scenarios, i.e. 100%, 90% and 75% of covered demand for ELV management. The algorithm is identified for this specific problem as a Fixed Charge Facility Location Problem. The algorithm is solved through Facility Location Software SITATION©. The results show the optimal number of facilities at every stage of the management, to cover the demand for ELV management considered in the different scenarios. The fourth part is to propose a model to finance the ELV management in Mexico. The main features of this scheme are explained, as well as its advantages, disadvantages and incentives thought to be triggered into the Mexican ELV chain.
Approaches to restore post-mining areas should provide sustainable solutions for recovering biodiversity and ecosystem services in regions experiencing massive deforestation. Key components that are impacted by surface mining activities and that restoration intervention should therefore target are biodiversity attributes and ecosystem service provisioning. The consequences of restoration decisions in post-mining areas in the Afrotropical region (here Ghana) remain understudied. To this end, l assessed levels of soil properties, biodiversity and ecosystem service in a post-mining area after two decades of active forest restoration by comparing them to attributes of the surrounding dominant land-use types. l hypothesized that (i) the interventions applied to restore and manage a post-mining area improve ecosystem attributes beyond conditions observed in the alternative dominant land-use types and even reaching levels comparable to reference forest (Chapter III), (ii) soil conditions and the functional structure of tree communities drive ecosystem functions and multifunctionality, with highest multifunctionality levels in the restored and natural forests (Chapter IV), (iii) the structure of tree communities coupled with pronounced climatic seasonality support a higher number of arthropods and arthropod functional groups particularly in the wet season and in structurally heterogeneous land-use types (Chapter V), and (iv) active forest restoration enhances the levels of ecosystem service provision similar to the reference forest with possible trade-offs or synergies among individual ecosystem services across forest types (Chapter VI). Chapter I provides an introduction to deforestation, and further highlights global and national initiatives, including active forest restoration, to reverse or minimize the impacts of tropical deforestation. Chapter II details the methodological approaches applied for sampling. Chapter III focussed on soil properties in addition to below and above-ground biomass of trees. The characteristic soil attributes for the restored forest were not significantly different from those in the reference forest, except for bulk density and base saturation, but differed significantly from attributes in all other land-use types. Chapter IV focussed on how the functional structure of tree communities affects the provision of ecosystem services. For functional composition, both the leaf economic spectrum and the seed mass dimensions separated different land-use types. Chapter V addresses the research question on how post-mining restoration affects arthropod communities. Communities of ground-active arthropods differed significantly between land-use types depending on the season. By quantifying the various ecosystem attributes in the field and transforming them into ecosystem service proxies, l could primarily identify synergies with no apparent trade-off between ecosystem services across the forest land-use types (Chapter VI).
This thesis focuses on the deposition of thin TiO₂ films on p-type Si using atomic layer deposition (ALD) technique, on the study of the electronic proprieties of the grown films and on the electrochemical characterization of TiO₂/Si photoelectrodes. The deposition parameters, electronic properties and electrochemical performance and stability of the TiO₂/Si samples are correlated.
The ALD technique is used to deposit TiO₂ with two different precursors namely Titanium isopropoxide and Titanium methoxide onto Si substrates. Laboratory as well as synchrotron based X-ray spectroscopy techniques are used to characterize these films. The growth quality of the TiO₂ ALD films is determined by analyzing X-Ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) data in terms of stoichiometry, defect states and Ti³⁺:Ti⁴⁺ ratios. The ALD technique was modified with different heating arrangements to obtain various polymorphs of TiO₂.
The ALD and anatase TiO₂ films are characterized using synchrotron radiation to study their electronic properties and these films are compared with single crystal rutile TiO₂. X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and resonant photoelectron spectroscopy (res-PES) measurements are performed with synchrotron radiation. XAS measurements are used to determine the polymorphs as well as the electronic structure of TiO₂ Res-PES measurements are conducted at the O1s and Ti2p edges to study multiple hole Auger decay processes and polaronic and charge transfer states as well as to determine the electronic band gap of the TiO₂ layers. One of the main findings of this thesis is the determination of the partial density of states (pDOS) of O and Ti in the conduction and valence band. The combination of the pDOS and the band edge positions obtained from res-PES measurements are used to calculate the charge neutrality level of the TiO₂ polymorphs.
The photoelectrochemical measurements are conducted on bare-Si and TiO₂/Si photoelectrodes. The electrochemical performance of these photoelectrodes is studied in electrolytes having pH values ranging from 1 to 13. The deposition of TiO₂ on Si enhances the photoelectrochemical performance of the Si photoelectrode. The TiO₂ increases the stability of the photoelectrode in all electrochemical media over 12 hours of experimental condition. Moreover, it is also observed that the TiO₂/Si photoelectrode is less responsive to the pH value of the electrolyte. The electrochemical findings are explained on the basis of the electronic properties of the TiO₂ layer. The electronic band gap obtained from spectroscopic measurement and the photoelectrochemical measurements are used to explain the performance and stability of the TiO₂/Si photoelectrodes. The thesis also addresses the stability of Si microstructured photoelectrodes (SiMPs) prepared by an electrochemical method. The stability of the SiMPs deteriorates more rapidly than that one of the planar Si photoelectrode. However, using a protective ALD TiO₂ layer on these SiMPs the overall performance is even more enhanced than on the TiO₂/planar Si system.
The range of application of fatty acids is as broad and varied as the diverse kinds of fatty acids themselves, stretching from bulk scale productions as in the case of biodiesel or lubricant manufacturing over consumer or end products like cosmetics, medicinal or nutritional additives to relatively smaller scale specialty chemicals like epoxy resins, insect repellents and so on. The crystallization temperatures of the unsaturated fatty acids are much lower than those of the saturated ones, which is an important and desirable property for raw materials such as in the production of epoxy resins. Separation and purification of these enriched unsaturated fatty acid fractions depending on their applications is mainly performed by two thermal fractionation processes, namely, distillation and crystallization. The potential behind the success of purification of these multi-component organic fatty acid mixtures with the help of melt crystallization, apart from the fact that it is cost effective owing to the obvious reduction of solvent removal and regeneration steps, is that of the relatively large differences in the melting points of the individual fatty acids.
A detailed and fundamental understanding of the crystallization especially nucleation kinetics of a variety of vegetable oil based fatty acid mixtures has been provided in this work. It also describes the solid-liquid phase diagrams of these poly-unsaturated mixtures including their metastable zone widths of nucleation and solidification. This theoretical part of this thesis is a detailed resource on the global production and application of vegetable oils and their derivatives. A clear mathematical and physical road map for the application of the Fisher Turnbull model to calculate the enthalpy values starting from the very basic supersaturation equation has been established and extensively explained as well. Nucleation studies have been carried out on various reactor setups in micro-, milli- and liter-scale. It successfully models the induction times of nucleation as a function of supercooling at different cooling rates both in micro and macro scale. 3D modeling of this parameter to see the combined effects of temperature and in turn viscosity have also been successfully implemented on the milliliter scale results, as more of the bulk nucleation phenomenon was observed in the latter. Fisher Turnbull plot and the Gibbs Thompsons model were adjusted and applied to correlate the Gibbs free energy, involved with the rate of nucleation captured by the FBRM™ (Focused Beam Reflectance Measurement) technology. The scope of this measurement technology was also tested in liter scale. The results showed that FBRM technology is applicable when the solution is relatively dilute and does not have too many overlapping crystals.
This work demonstrates the design and implementation of a multi-band multi-standard WLAN system consisting of a 5 - 6 GHz receiver and a 24 GHz down-converter. The main challenges are high frequency, broadband, and adaptive operation, power consumption and high integration level. This thesis introduces a multi-standard adaptive receiver concept to fulfill those requirements. The receivers are implemented in a standard 0.13 µm CMOS technology. A direct-conversion architecture for the 5 - 6 GHz band and a heterodyne architecture for a multi-band system are proposed. The most common receiver architectures are analyzed and the wave propagation effects are discussed. Then the most important receiver parameters are derived. Active and passive integrated components are investigated because understanding the device characteristic is a key requirement for a successful high frequency design. Finally, the multi-standard adaptive receiver concept is introduced. The choice of architecture, design and implementation of each of the receiver building blocks are discussed. The functionality of the 5 - 6 GHz receiver and the 24 GHz down-converter is demonstrated by the performance measurements. The main achievements of this work include: Firstly, a 5-6 GHz LNA integrated in 0.13 µm CMOS technology. The amplifier exhibits a gain of 16.5 dB, noise figure of 2.9 dB and 1 dB input compression point of -6.5dBm at power consumption of 7.5mW. The circuit features robust built-in input ESD protection. Secondly, a 5-6 GHz zero-IF receiver with analog pre-processing features a noise figure of 3.8 dB at the conversion gain of 43.4 dB. The channel select filter corner frequency is tunable to 6.5, 10, 20 and 50 MHz. The implemented analog pre-processing loop allows to adopt the linearity of the receiver to the input signal level. Thirdly, a 23-24 GHz tuned down-converter achieved the gain of 21.8 dB, noise figure of 6.8 dB and 1 dB input compression point of -16.7dBm at power consumption of 58.5mW.
We describe the problem of re-balancing a number of units distributed over a geographic area. Each unit consists of a number of components. A value between 0 and 1 describes the current rating of each component. By a piecewise linear function this value is converted into a nominal status assessment. The lowest of the statuses determines the efficiency of a unit, and the highest status its cost. An unbalanced unit has a gap between these two. To re-balance the units, components can be transferred. The goal is to maximize the efficiency of all units. On a secondary level, the cost for the re-balancing should be minimal. We present a mixed-integer nonlinear programming formulation for this problem, which describes the potential movement of components as a multi-commodity flow. The piecewise linear functions needed to obtain the status values are reformulated using inequalities and binary variables. This results in a mixed-integer linear program, and numerical standard solvers are able to compute proven optimal solutions for instances with up to 100 units. We present numerical solutions for a set of test instances and a bi-criteria objective function, and discuss the trade-off between cost and efficiency.
In 2012 a group of researchers proposed a basic research initiative to the German Research Foundation (DFG) as a special priority project (SPP) with the name: Wireless 100 Gbps and beyond. The main goal of this initiative was the investigation of architectures, technologies and methods to go well beyond the state of the art. The target of 100 Gbps was set far away from the (at that time) achievable 1 Gbps such that it was not possible to achieve promising results just by tuning some parameters. We wanted to find breakthrough solutions. When we started the work on the proposal we discussed the challenges to be addressed in order to advancing the wireless communication speed significantly. Having the fundamental Shannon boundary in mind we discussed how to achieve the 100 Gbps speed.
The use of renewable energy sources, either off-grid or on-grid to supply electricity, has been done by developed countries since many years ago. Developing countries, for example Indonesia especially east part of Indonesia have recently started this way whereas renewable energy potential for example hydro, PV and wind are abundantly available. The lack of research and data is one of the obstacles to precede the use of renewable energy in this area, meanwhile this area has electricity shortages problem that occurred quite often.
Combined hydro, PV, wind, coal and diesel generators will solve electricity shortages problem in Palu (Indonesia). Integration of Hydro, PV and wind into PALAPAS utility grid will decrease levelized cost of energy from US$ 0.145 per kWh to US$ 0.133 per kWh. Sensitivity analysis against fluctuating fuel cost (from US$ 0.4 per litre to US$ 1.6 per litre) will increase levelized cost of energy before integrating renewable energy into the grid from US$ 0.145 per kWh to US$ 0.455 per kWh and will increase levelized cost of energy after integrating RE into the grid from US$ 0.133 per kWh to US$ 0.403 per kWh.
Repowering grid with integrating hydro, PV and wind will increase power quality especially by using configuration based on homer results. Buses voltage and buses frequency showed better result before, during and after some faults based on Homer simulation results. Voltage spectrum and sinusoidal waveform voltage are showing less distortion after integrating hydro, PV and wind into the grid even with no distortion based on Homer results.
Large mammals constitute an integral part of biological resources, and hence fundamental elements in many ecosystems. In view of the roles played by habitats and humans in structuring large mammal populations, research was conducted in the Deng Deng National Park, with the aim to identify and characterize the spatial and temporal patterns of habitats, determine the relationship between habitat heterogeneity and mammal abundance and also to investigate the types and extent of human pressure on various large mammal species in the park.
Distance sampling technique and kilometric index analyses approaches were applied to determine species presence, frequency and abundance, with dung, nests, and tracks used as proxy for species presence. Using a spatio-temporal analysis approach in Geographic Information System, species distribution was analyzed. Small and medium sized duikers, red river hog and gorilla were most frequently encountered. Important is the record of elephant for the first time in the park, emphasizing the importance of the park for large mammal conservation.
Diverse land cover types that constitute habitats for flora and fauna were distinguished and characterized as dense forest, mature secondary forest, young secondary forest, tree and grassland savanna, settlement and degraded areas, and water bodies. Area, mean patch size, shape, density and richness metrics of these land cover types varied, emphasizing the heterogeneity of the park landscape. No significant differences (0.2 ≤ p ≥ 0.8) were observed in species abundance due to diverse habitat characteristics in the park. Species exhibited generalist habits with preference mostly for the dense and mature secondary forest habitat types. Temporal pattern over a 23 years’ time lag projected a 6.19 % increase in dense forest cover, suggesting future shelter opportunities for large mammals in the park.
The park is experiencing threats that are changing the physical environment in simple and reversible manner but also threats that have changed the parks environment in permanent ways; all from impacts of adjacent human settlements and development activities. Generally, species abundance was significantly high (p = 0.03) in habitats where threats encounter rates were low, and low in habitats affected by high human activity; a clear indication that these activities have eventually created depressing effects on the habitats of large mammal species in the park.
Actions aimed to limit human activities around the park, and aiming to sustain the large mammals and their habitats, especially within the hotspots identified in this study, are therefore proposed to ensure a more sustainable future for large mammals in the Deng Deng National Park.
The existence of large deposit of crude oil in the Nigerian Niger-Delta accords the region a strategic position in the country’s economy. However, activities associated with the oil and gas industry have resulted in extensive and in some instances indelible damages on the ecosystems. The destructive effect of hydrocarbon on bionetwork necessitated this study that aimed at evaluating the potential of adopting microbial and biosurfactant technology as tools for bioremediation. The research involved gas chromatography monitoring of hydrocarbon degradation in polluted soil, microbiological/molecular identification of hydrocarbon degraders and the evaluation of biosurfactant production by indigenous bacteria. The performance of four treatments involving; co-treatment with mixed bacterial consortium and close-to-nature surfactants (Bioversal QF and Bioversal UK), treatments with mixed bacteria culture, single bacteria culture and treatment with close-to-nature surfactants only were evaluated for the mineralization of hydrocarbons contained in 500g of 2% crude oil contaminated soil supplemented with NaH₂PO*₄2HO₂, KHP₂O₄ and NHC₄l as nutrient sources over a period of 20 weeks. Six indigenous biosurfactant producing and/or hydrocarbon degrading bacteria strains were isolated namely: Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus sp, Achromobacter sp, Stenotrophonas sp, Lysinibacillus sp. and Delftia sp. Molecular characterization of sequenced polymerase chain reaction products of these cultured bacteria using Nucleotide Basic Local Alignment Search Tool confirmed close relationships ranging from 98.83% to 100% with those on the NCBI databank. Co-treatment with mixed bacteria culture and Bioversal UK/Bioversal QF yielded synergetic impact that enhanced 73.35% and 71.52% degradation of total petroleum hydrocarbon respectively. Treatments with close-to-nature surfactants and with mix bacterial culture recorded 53.61% and 54.58%. The use of single bacteria strains resulted in the mineralization of 46% - 62.26% total petroleum hydrocarbon while their use as a consortium yielded 54%. Liquid chromatography-Mass spectrometry assessment of extracellular polymeric substances produced by cultured bacteria strains indicated the presence of rhamnolipids (L-rhamnosyl-3-hydroxydecanoyl-3-hydroxydecanoic acid with a mass of 504.654 Da) and lipopeptides (2-(Hydroxymethyl) phenyl 6-O-palmitoyl-β-D-glucopyranoside with a mass of 524.687 Da). Extracellular polymeric substances produced yielded emulsion index ranging from 70.70% to 75% and 39% to 65% with crude oil and heptane respectively. EPS yields ranging from 1.34 g/ml to 1.5 g/ml were recorded.
Factory automation applications require a communication system that concurrently supports them with determinism, reliability, short communication cycles, and precise synchronization as well as mobility and extensibility. However, neither currently employed wired nor available wireless communication networks support all of these requirements at once. On the one hand, wired networks lack mobility and extensibility. On the other hand, wireless networks do not support reliability or determinism due to the stochastic nature of wireless channels. Moreover, none of the available wireless networks enable transmission latencies of 1 ms and below. Therefore, they cannot support the required short communication cycles. However, various research initiatives and the currently developed 5G standard promise to overcome these limitations at least partially.
Nevertheless, even a corresponding wireless network will not directly replace all wired connections, but will initially be used for subsections of the data transmission, where e.g. mobility is of utmost importance. Accordingly, cascaded communication networks consisting of hierarchically ordered, wired and wireless subnetworks will emerge. In this thesis, we investigate effects and dependencies of such a cascading for the real-time communication of factory automation applications. Therefore, we have to find methods to interconnect arbitrary wired and wireless communication networks such that we can maintain the reliable real-time performance of wired subnetworks and the mobility of wireless subnetworks without, or at most with minimal performance degradation. Ideally, with a cascaded network, no hardware or software adjustments will be necessary compared to the individual networks deployed today.
Based on a delimiting review of different application areas and a dedicated use case analysis of typical factory automation applications, we derive the most challenging requirements that have to be fulfilled by cascaded communication networks. According to this review, we present several methods to reduce the overall transmission latency in cascaded networks. Starting with analyzing different interface concepts and continuing with frame conversion methods, we achieve a decision-making basis to select dedicated subnetworks for a cascaded network that can be used for closed-loop control applications. Additionally, we develop methods to optimize the parametrization of individual subnetworks with respect to the overall communication, such that the end-to-end transmission latency can be drastically reduced. For verification, we design a generic model for analyzing the timing behavior of arbitrary communication networks and verify it based on an analysis of a machine tool application scenario. Additional measurements based on a real demonstrator implementation corroborate that, in industrial application, cascaded communication networks can provide competitive performance compared to the currently used wired networks.
It is predicted that, in the next years, wireless sensor networks could be massively deployed in a wide variety of application areas, such as agriculture, logistics, automation, or infrastructure monitoring. An extremely low power consumption, high dependability, and low cost are common requirements for sensor nodes in all these applications. This can be achieved only by tiny, power-efficient microcontrollers and communication systems integrated on a single chip. Formal description techniques, such as SDL (Specification and Description Language), are suitable to formally prove properties of models designed in these languages. Code generators facilitate the automatic transformation of SDL models into software implementations, while preserving the properties of the model and, thus, achieving high system dependability. The implementations consist of the translated state machine behavior and, additionally, require a run-time environment for model execution. The objective of this work was to investigate an integrated design flow for embedded systems, which should allow the development of efficient and dependable system implementations from abstract SDL specifications. In this thesis, concepts for minimal SDL run-time environment have been devised and realized by an example implementation. Not only pure software implementations should be considered, but starting from these also the hardware/software (HW/SW) partitioning of the system should be supported. For this purpose, a cosimulation framework that allows the coupling of an instruction set simulator (ISS) with a functional SDL simulation has been investigated and prototypically implemented within the scope of this thesis. By shifting functionality to dedicated hardware components it is possible to take computational load from the microcontroller and to decrease the overall energy consumption by reducing the clock frequency and lowering the supply voltage. Due to the use of SDL, the design flow lends itself particularly to the implementation of communication protocols, and is limited to applications with soft real-time requirements. For an SDL-based design flow targeted to resource-constrained embedded systems, concepts and real implementations of minimal SDL run-time environments were lacking. Available software tools, indeed, enable the transformation of SDL models into C code, however for an efficient implementation, an integration into existing real-time operating systems (RTOS) for small microcontrollers is essential. A prototypical implementation of a run-time library for the Reflex RTOS has been created to validate our general concepts. It is about 30 % faster and consumes less than half of the program memory compared to the operating system independent run-time environment of the tool vendor Telelogic. For simple SDL models, the application requires in total less than 8 kbytes program memory and 1 kbyte RAM. For the evaluation of design alternatives that realize different hardware/software partitionings, instruction set simulators are particularly suitable. They facilitate the identification of performance bottlenecks of the HW/SW system. Test stimuli are required in order to measure the performance and response time of systems under design. The development of an environment that generates such test signals can be a laborious task. Thus, it is reasonable, especially in the design of protocols, to use an SDL simulation of a communication network to generate these test stimuli. Such an SDL model already exists and is the basis for the implementation. The protocol implementation simulated by the ISS then becomes part of the network simulation. An efficient coupling of SDL simulations with instruction set simulators had to be investigated, and a solution is presented in this thesis. Based on the general concepts, a cosimulation framework for the ISS TSIM for the LEON2 processor was realized by the author. The joint SDL and instruction set simulation is very fast, which could be demonstrated by connecting a software implementation of the complex IEEE 802.15.3 medium access control (MAC) protocol with an SDL simulation of a network consisting of four devices. The real execution time for 10 seconds of simulation time amounted to just 50 seconds. The overall design flow was validated by means of a HW/SW implementation of the IEEE 802.15.3 wireless MAC protocol. The author designed a complete SDL model of the protocol and integrated it into Reflex. By using our cosimulation environment for the TSIM simulator, the model was partitioned into hardware and software. For the hardware part, a dedicated protocol accelerator was designed by the author. This hardware component was integrated on a single chip with the LEON2 processor and, finally, manufactured. It could be shown that the presented methodology enables the design and implementation of efficient HW/SW systems. Consequently, it can be applied to the development of dependable and energy-efficient wireless sensor nodes and other embedded systems.
Morphological and optical properties of a multilayer film (CAZO/CZAO/ZACO) prepared by spin-coating method and deposited on a glass substrate were evaluated. The study was initially carried out for each layer, individually and then as a multilayer subsequently. Structural properties using X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), infrared spectra (IR) and X-ray photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) showed the presence of three phases of zinc, copper and silver oxides at different levels. The CZAO sample observed with scanning electron microscope (SEM) showed an excellent porous surface with a large deformation in the multilayer configuration. Doping with zinc and copper in the silver crystal lattice improved the crystal structure and reduced the optical energy gap, thus increasing the optical absorbance and refractive index. The dielectric constants and showed an increase in the optical polarization values for lower photonic energies. The maximum degradation rate for photocatalysts of methylene blue was 89 % for a 5-h exposure period with CAZO/CZAO/ZACO while it reached 71 % for the CZAO sample during the same time period. The sensitivity of samples to light proved that the presence of ultraviolet radiation increases the number of holes trapped by oxygen ions and causes more free electrons and contribute to a better production of photocurrent than in darkness.
Wetlands have gained tremendous importance since the 1970s, both in scientific discussion and in government policy discourse. The Ramsar Convention provided some clarity in definitions of wetlands and their natural and social significance. However, the current scientific understanding of wetlands was constructed in the centers of knowledge production in the West. One of the consequences has been that local knowledge of wetlands has been obscured or ignored altogether. This research uses methods of historical archaeology, ethnography, and archival work to explore the Anlo's local knowledge of wetlands in Ghana. Anlo local knowledge includes unique forms of wetland ownership arrangements, appropriate management approaches, and so-called atsidza are used as epistemic tools. Bryan Norton's conceptual framework of adaptive management gives an important role to local experimentation and is therefore seen as a key tool for sustainable management. Adaptive management is understood as anlo-style consensus-building management to appropriately incorporate local knowledge and western science into wetland management. The concept of adaptive management is modified accordingly to integrate postcolonial studies of knowledge production and thus can also contribute to the critical analysis of the integration of local knowledge, which has tended to be underestimated or even ignored in postcolonial theories.
The research introduces volunteering at World Heritage site as a potential civic engagement tool, which can increase communication between heritage property and local community. The first part of the study focuses on the concept of volunteering and on the role it plays in community involvement at World Heritage sites as well as on its benefits for social development in general.
The second part of the research intends to give practical recommendation on designing a volunteer program under conditions of the World Heritage site of the Palaces and Parks in Potsdam and Berlin. The author raises a question how a volunteering program can be organized to be effective and at the same time to respond to the UNESCO World Heritage Programme and to the newest UNESCO conservation concepts, such as Historic Urban Landscape approach.
The study aims to serve as a practical guide for museums and heritage organisations that intend to improve community involvement in their work.
Urban adaptation is a critical issue for many of the developing countries of Southeast Asia. Vietnam is likely to be among the countries most adversely affected by climate change. Moreover, its largest city, Ho Chi Minh City is considered worldwide as one of most vulnerable to a multitude of climate-related hazards, including flooding, sea-level rise and extreme heat events. Similar to other rapidly developing megacities in Southeast Asia, Ho Chi Minh City has undergone enormous changes in recent decades and has rapidly developed into an emerging megacity shaped by global processes and local settlement patterns. Recently, the need to adapt to the multiple stressors of rapid urbanisation and climate change has become increasingly evident. Adaptation to climate change in urban areas depends on decision-makers’ understanding of the current and future impacts of climate change. Land-use planning as a place-based and problem-solving strategy has been recognised as a key tool in this respect, to mainstream climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction into urban development. Yet a key challenge is a lack of relevant information on exposed populations and assets at risk to planners and policymakers. The dissertation outlines the development of an integrated framework predominantly based on an urban structure type approach. This approach was used to manually interpret high resolution, remotely sensed imagery in order to portray and understand patterns of settlement and urban structure layout of the current and emerging landscapes of Ho Chi Minh City. The approach is able to capture the highly dynamic spatiotemporal, social and structural changes associated with rapid urbanisation. The overall findings show the applicability of the developed framework to produce important input indicators for risk adapted land-use planning. These are ultimately useful to determine hotspots for administrative interventions and to assist prioritising in spatial and urban planning decision-making.
Financial globalization is an inherent feature of today’s economies. But the positive impact of financial globalization has been limited and some puzzling evidence has been found recently. To explain these puzzles, Stulz argued that finance is critically affected by Twin Agency Problems: firstly, the controlling shareholders can use their power for their own benefit but at the expense of outside investors. Secondly, the state rulers can use their power to improve their own welfare at the expense of all shareholders. When these agency problems worsen, diffuse ownership is inefficient and ownership concentration is the best choice. Ownership concentration inversely limits a country’s ability to benefit from financial globalization. On the basis of Stulz’s theory and remaining the central role of the Twin Agency Problems in fostering ownership concentration, this study relaxes some simplified assumptions in Stulz’s model and develops a more practical one. According to this developed model, the following solutions from the theoretical research are suggested for the government to solve the agency problems: improving the legal sense through education; increasing the expected profitability with active economic policies; strengthening the constraint on the expropriators through laws and regulations; implementing the above three strategies together; lastly, improving the investor protection during the development of financial market. This paper also makes an empirical investigation in China. On the basis of the data from 1481 Chinese companies listed in Shanghai, Shenzhen or New York, it is found that more than 70 % of the companies are ownership concentrated. More than halve of them are controlled by the state and nearly 20% are controlled by families. The average degree of ownership concentration in China is more than 30%, which is higher than most other Asian countries. It was argued that listing abroad can decrease the ownership concentration, but the evidence in China shows that the companies listed abroad are more concentrated than those listed only inland. The investigation of the profitability reveals that the companies listed abroad are not more profitable than those listed inland, but the difference of the profitability between these companies is much less, which means the companies listed abroad are more reliable as a whole, because bad companies are strictly forbidden to step into the market. The investigation of the relationship between capital scale and ownership concentration shows that the companies with greater capital scale are more concentrated and most of the giant companies are controlled by the government. Because in a country without advanced financial market the capital can be collected from the public is limited and the huge companies could only be financed by the state. The smaller companies are easier to become ownership dispersed. The research of the relationship between ownership concentration and profitability reveals that family held companies are more profitable than state held ones; the widely held companies have the lowest profitability. Although most of the dispersed companies have a poor performance, some of them are really good. The research of the ownership structures finds out that the companies with indirect dispersed structure or foundation held structure are more profitable and the deviation of profitability of these companies is much less than the pyramid structure. Another discovery is that most of the companies with indirect dispersed structure are held by hundreds of or even more than thousand of the employees of the listed company. The reasons why these companies are more profitable are the lower separation of voting rights from cash flow right and the more ownership encouragement. In the employee held companies, the ownership is dispersed to all the managers and almost all employees, and all of them are encouraged to do well and to act as monitors for each other. So, it is difficult for the top managers to steal from the company. Through all these empirical research the following suggestions to resolve the twin agency problems are obtained: not relying on foreign financial market but concentrating on the advancement of legal sense, laws and regulations inland; strictly examining the companies which apply to be listed on the exchange and prevent the bad companies from going into the market; beginning the decentralization of ownership with relative smaller companies; transforming the state holding company into employee holding dispersed company; eliminating or decreasing the separation of voting rights from cash flow rights; encouraging and supervising the managers by given more managers stocks or shares of the company.
Modern dielectrics in combination with appropriate metal electrodes have a great potential to solve many difficulties associated with continuing miniaturization process in the microelectronic industry. One significant branch of microelectronics incorporates dynamic random access memory (DRAM) market. The DRAM devices scaled for over 35 years starting from 4 kb density to several Gb nowadays. The scaling process led to the dielectric material thickness reduction, resulting in higher leakage current density, and as a consequence higher power consumption. As a possible solution for this problem, alternative dielectric materials with improved electrical and material science parameters were intensively studied by many research groups. The higher dielectric constant allows the use of physically thicker layers with high capacitance but strongly reduced leakage current density. This work focused on deposition and characterization of thin insulating layers. The material engineering process was based on Si cleanroom compatible HfO2 thin films deposited on TiN metal electrodes. A combined materials science and dielectric characterization study showed that Ba added HfO2 (BaHfO3) films and Ti added BaHfO3 (BaHf0.5Ti0.5O3) layers are promising candidates for future generation of state of the art DRAMs. In especial a strong increase of the dielectric permittivity k was achieved for thin films of cubic BaHfO3 (k~38) and BaHf0.5Ti0.5O3 (k~90) with respect to monoclinic HfO2 (k~19). Meanwhile the CET values scaled down to 1 nm for BaHfO3 and ~0.8 nm for BaHf0.5Ti0.5O3 with respect to HfO2 (CET=1.5 nm). The Hf4+ ions substitution in BaHfO3 by Ti4+ ions led to a significant decrease of thermal budget from 900°C for BaHfO3 to 700°C for BaHf0.5Ti0.5O3. Future studies need to focus on the use of appropriate metal electrodes (high work function) and on film deposition process (homogeneity) for better current leakage control.
PLETS (Product Lifecycle Extension Technique/Process Selection) model is a computer supported decision making analysis method developed for the management of mechanical products at the utilisation and retirement stages. The core of the work involves the hybridisation of a number of classical MADM methods to suit decision making in the product life extension domain. The model provides a comprehensive view of the economic implications, technical requirements and environmental effects of using one of the five identified lifecycle-extension-processes (PLETs): repair, refurbishing, remanufacturing, upgrading and cascading, to elongate the service life of a given hardware. The PLETS model is intended for the evaluation and screening of PLETs, and for the selection of the best option under a given scenario. The results obtained for the shelling machine used to illustrate the applicability, and to validate both the methodology and its companion demonstrative computer implementation prototype showed that repair is the best PLET under the given conditions. The compatibility of this result with what obtains in practice shows that the methodology is a suitable decision making aid for product life extension.
The objective of this thesis was to accurately check and improve the models existing for eutectic solder alloys used in simulation tools. Creep deformation, which is the most important deformation mode of solders, of two solder alloys, the widely used eutectic SnPb and the environmentally friendly alternative solder alloy SnAgCu was tested. It was shown that it is necessary to model two different stages of this high temperature induced mechanism: To improve the current material definition, primary creep must be implemented in the FE-software in addition to the existing secondary creep models. This thesis shows how it is possible to test creep behaviour under cyclic loading conditions with a test specimen of novel design. So, primary creep was observed and reoccurs cyclically under such test conditions. Furthermore, steady state creep is also always observed. A Constitutive equation combining both primary and secondary creep was given and verified. This model was implemented in FE-code Ansys, and after performing different kinds of simulation, the necessity of simulating primary creep was demonstrated. In order to achieve reliability information by FE-simulation of solder die attach, the creep-fatigue behaviour with the mean of crack propagation must be modeled. Various kinds of chips on copper substrate (power-transistors) were thermally tested, and different methods were used to investigate crack propagation. These methods were scanning acoustic microscopy and microstructure analysis by optical microscopy. The influence of damage on thermal behaviour (i.e. the thermal resistance of the device) was also assessed. These results were compared with the simulation results in order to build a lifetime prediction model based on crack propagation analysis.
In this work Adaptive Polynomial Tabulation (APT) is presented. It is a new approach to solve the initial value chemical rate equation system. In this approach zeroeth, first and second order polynomials are used in real-time to approximate the solution of the initial value chemical rate equation system. The sizes of the local regions encountered for the different orders of polynomial approximation are calculated in real-time. To improve accuracy the chemical state space is partitioned into hypercubes. During calculations the hypercubes accessed by the reactive mixture are divided into adaptive hypercubes depending on the accuracy of the local solution. Mixture initial conditions are stored in the adaptive hypercubes. Around each stored initial condition two concentric ellipsoids of accuracy (EOA) are defined. These include the ISAT and identical EOAs. The time evolution of mixture initial conditions which encounter an identical and ISAT EOA are approximated by zero and first order polynomials respectively. With a certain number of stored initial conditions within an adaptive hypercube, its second order polynomial coefficients are constructed from the stored initial conditions. The time evolution of additional mixture initial conditions that encounter this adaptive hypercube are approximated with second order polynomials. The APT model is simplified by the replacement of the entire set of species mass fractions with a progress variable based on the enthalpy of formation evaluated at 298 K. APT has 3 degrees of freedom which include the progress variable, total enthalpy and pressure. The APT model was tested with a zero dimensional Stochastic Reactor Model (SRM) for HCCI engine combustion. A skeletal n-heptane/toluene mechanism with 148 chemical species and 1281 reactions was used. In the tests, the HCCI engine simulations using APT were in very good agreement with the model calculations using the ODE solver. The cool flame and main ignition events were accurately captured. The major and minor species were also accurately captured by APT. In SRM-HCCI calculations without cyclic variations, a computational speed up factor greater than 1000 was obtained when APT was used for all the operating points considered without significant loss in accuracy. For the SRM-HCCI engine calculations with cyclic variations, APT demonstrated a computational speed up exceeding 12 without significant loss in accuracy.
With the increasing consciousness of the value of wetland ecological and environmental functions and its fast rate of decline in the size of this important and rich ecosystem globally, the Niger Delta ecosystem has been reported to be undergoing tremendous change, hence the need for this research, to identify the challenges and proffer solutions. This study focuses on ascertaining if a change has occurred in the Upper Orashi Forest Reserved wetland, to know and evaluate the policies used in managing the wetland in the region and Nigeria. To ascertain the wetland change, land cover change detection was carried out using Geographic Information Systems and Remote Sensing to produce paradigm or data to detect change occurrence in the wetland area. Supervised classification of land use and land cover change was carried out using LANDSAT data from 2002, 2008, and 2019. Thereafter, the land cover transition was mapped for the period 2002 to 2019 and this was computed for the net land cover change for the period of study. The site was classified into three different classes and each class was analyzed using the land use and land cover change model formula. The result from this part shows that there is a consistent decrease in the wetland area for the period under review and in the other two identified classes, some interchangeable compositions were observed for the period of study. To validate this result, the opinion of experts and the host community is needed. Two sets of questionnaires were designed for experts and local community dwellers to sample their opinion in relation to the wetland and its management. The information collected was analyzed using Microsoft excel and the result shows that changes have occurred in the wetland of Upper Orashi Forest (decrease in size and other challenging issues with respect to policies and regulations). This study has identified critical challenging issues facing wetlands in the region or driving factors of wetland loss in the study area. Thereafter making recommendations that will help address these issues to actualize environmental sustainability and sustainable wetland in the region and Nigeria at large.
Modern law and local tradition in forest heritage conservation in Cameroon : the case of Korup
(2012)
Cameroon’s forests are exceptionally rich in biodiversity but are among the most threatened forests in the Congo Basin. To safeguard the country’s forest heritage, the government resorted to the creation of protected areas such as the Korup National Park (KNP) but ignored the local traditional system of natural resource management and relied merely on modern law for its protection. But the protection of the park only through modern law has not yielded satisfactory results since it still faces numerous problems which exacerbate biodiversity loss. With many problems facing the park, there is growing concern with regards to government strategy to maintain its values and integrity merely through modern law. This dissertation aims at assessing the potentials of modern law and local traditional system of natural resource management as instruments for effective protection of the KNP in particular and other Cameroonian national parks in general. It further aims at exploring ways of adapting national law and policy to suit local reality. To realise the objectives of this study, legal science analytical method, instruments of both quantitative approach (questionnaire) and qualitative approach (semi-structured interviews) were used. An in-depth assessment of the degree of effectiveness of modern law application in Korup reveals that it is to a lesser extent effective and this impedes Cameroon’s adequate compliance with its biodiversity conservation obligations under international environmental agreements. The study finds that the park’s protection unit plays a commendable role in fighting against illegal activities but inadequate financial resources and logistics render the institution weak. Other institutions play a laudable role in enforcing the law but major weaknesses identified include bail abuses, leniency in punishing offenders and corruption. It was discovered that the Korup inhabitants are against resettlement and often reluctantly cooperate in enforcing modern law. The research reveals that cultural beliefs and traditional practices associated with totems, taboos and sacred forests exist in the Korup villages and contributed in protecting Korup forest heritage. It shows that the putting into practice of some aspects of the traditional cultural practices was often without conservation intention but paradoxically, this contributed to forest biodiversity conservation. The study finds that each village has customary laws and local bylaws which are binding on its inhabitants and contribute to rational use of forest resources. The chieftaincy, village council and the Ekpe society are revealed as traditional institutions that govern the Korup people and manage forest resources through the traditional system ignored by the state. The research shows that statutory law recognises only the chieftaincy institution but reduces traditional rulers to mere auxiliaries of the government thereby weakening traditional institutions that ought to contribute in protecting Korup forest heritage. It recommends that in addition to fighting corruption and building the capacity of law enforcement institutions, the government should adequately integrate traditional rulers and institutions into the modern governance structure. It should legally recognise the role of traditional authorities in safeguarding Korup forest heritage through the traditional system. The study concludes that a management and conservation strategy that involves the people of Korup through their traditional institutions and system of natural resource management, will lead to effective protection and sustainability of the KNP and thus, contribute in enhancing Cameroon’s compliance with biodiversity-related international environmental agreements.
