The flow over macroscopic patterned/structured surfaces was investigated in a subsonic wind tunnel over Reynolds numbers ranging from 3.14 x 104 to 2.77 x 105 for cylinders and from 5.34 x 105 to 11.27 x 106 for plates. The investigations were accomplished by measuring local and global drag, velocity profiles and by visualization of the flow above the surface. The investigations on structured cylinders revealed that a cylinder with outwardly curved structures has a drag coefficient of about 0.65 times of a smooth one. Flow visualization was carried out by using oil-film technique and velocity profile measurements to elucidate the observed effect, and hence present the mechanism responsible for the observed drag reduction. The near-wall velocity profiles above the surface revealed that a hexagonal bump induces local separation generating large turbulence intensity along the separating shear layer. Due to this increased turbulence, the flow reattaches to the surface with a higher momentum and become able to withstand the pressure gradient delaying the main separation significantly. Besides that, the separation does not appear to occur in a straight line along the length of the cylinder, but follow the curved path forming a wave with its crest at 115° and trough at 110°, in contrast to the laminar separation line at 85° on a smooth cylinder. Investigations on structured plates were performed with the help of hot wire anemometry and oil film interferometry. The main concern of the experiments on structured plates was to examine the effect of hexagonal structures on local and global drag of a structured plate. It was accomplished by determining and analyzing the boundary layer quantities like shear stress velocities, shear stress coefficients and momentum thicknesses over a selected Reynolds number range and various locations in streamwise direction. The results indicate that the values of shear stress coefficients measured by the conventional Clauser chart method are up to 13% higher than the ones deduced by the Oil film Interferometry. Additionally, a maximum of 19% reduction in shear stress coefficient behind the inwardly curved structured plate was observed. On the other hand, a dramatic increase of about 120% in global drag coefficient supersedes the observed reduction in shear stresses at rear of the test plates. Investigations on individual hexagonal structures by measuring the shear stresses and the pressure distribution above the surface revealed that an uneven pressure distribution contributing in total drag force is responsible for a huge increase in global skin drag coefficient. Finally, a number of configurations of a wind turbine made of smooth and structured blades were investigated to compare their efficiencies at various flow velocities. No significant deviation in the efficiencies was observed.
This thesis deals with geomorphic processes associated with Small-Scale Opencast Mining (SSOM) in the Gatumba sector of the Western Highlands of Rwanda. In this area tin and tantalum mining was carried out for decades, and it has brought about increase in the wealth and standard of living of the people. Though a lot has been done and achieved in soil erosion research, and despite the enormous wealth coming from mining in Rwanda and Gatumba sector in particular, the negative environmental impacts resulting from mining activities were overlooked by miners and stakeholders and are scarcely addressed in the research yet. This trend was bound to last since there were no valid guidelines for assessing impacts and reclamation of mine sites for the operators in the sector. It was recently, in 2007, that restoration of mining areas has received great attention from the Rwanda Geology and Mine Authority.
The objective of the research was to assess and to increase the understanding of geomorphic impact produced by SSOM. In this regards, the following aspects which indicate the types and spatial distribution of geomorphic processes were measured: (i) investigate the landforms typical of SSOM, (ii) map the watershed morphometry of the study area, (iii) analyse the most relevant properties of soils in term of geomorphology, and (iv) to assess the soil loss potential in the study area.
Primary and secondary data were collected from Government agencies and personal observations. Desk study to review papers and relevant literatures, field observation and experiments, laboratory analyses, mapping and modelling using RUSLE were combined together to develop a practical and integrated methodological approach to effect and realize the objectives. The argument guiding this analytical approach is that physical processes produced by mining cannot be assessed through a single method. The first step mainly concentrated on defining mining sites suitable for assessing geomorphic processes. Within the two studied mines, namely Ruhanga and Gatare, different plots were identified based on the post-mining land uses, to investigate the level of soil and landscape degradation by comparing them with that of control sites located outside of mining influence. Modelling using RUSLE in GIS interface enabled to quantify soil loss potential within the mines and the watershed.
Results indicate that the direct processes associated with opencast mining commonly involve pitting and trenching. Indirect and less conspicuous processes emerge as a long-term consequence of mining. They include depletion of organic matter, compaction or loosening of soil particles in mine sites mostly reflected by low content in organic matter, low rating in soil stable aggregates, and often high soil bulk densities which are variably distributed within the mine sites. This could explain the restriction or lowering, or the rapid infiltration of water into the soil during field experiments, as a consequence probably of the sealing of soil pores or the formation of fissures around mine shafts, from which slides or slumps occur. In average, soil organic matter comprises between 1 and 2.5 % on control sites and ex-mine cultivated sites. organic matter content of soils on reclamation sites was in the same ranges with that of control and ex-mine cultivated sites, but could reach 4,8 % in topsoil of some sample locations. The ex-mine self-recovering sites present much lower organic matter content which doesn’t exceed 2 % in general. The soil aggregation rating of the area is from very low (8%) to low (≤13.5 %). In general, the bulk density ranges between 1.29 to 1.56 g cm-3, and locally can attain 1.76 g cm-3. As a consequence, the total porosity changes locally. Application of correlation and multiple regression models showed a strong influence of soil organic matter on the bulk density. Infiltration tests performed on different experimental sites showed differences of rates in water intake rates as in infiltration curves as well. Infiltration rates are variably distributed over the mines. They range from very slow (3.8 mmhr-1) to rapid (111.18 mm hr-1). Atterberg Limits analyses showed that soils of Gatumba Mining District do not possess extreme properties and they are suitable for engineering purposes. The liquid limit ranges between 51 % and 26 %, whereas the plastic limit is comprised between 22 % and 18 %. The highest plastic index (PI) determined was 29 % and the later soil had a plastic index of 6 %.
The average soil loss in the Gatumba watershed is 27.45 t ha-1 yr-1 with a standard deviation of 0.891. More than 65% of land are prone to high rates of soil loss (exceeding 10 t ha-1 yr-1), and an increasing soil erosion follows increasing slope and land use patterns. The maxima of soil erosion rates are found in Upper Kibilira, Kirombozi and Gisuma catchments respectively. Based on different scenarios applied to quantify soil erosion rates, we found that more the organic matter content from 0. 5%, 2% and >2%) is increased with better support practice (from contour, strip and terrace), more the soil erosion potentials are decreased linearly, in the order of 18.8 to 17.8 t ha-1 yr-1 from 2% to >2 % of organic matter content respectively.
To make SSOM more environmentally sustainable, there is a need of developing integrated practices and cross-cutting approaches that reduce the environmental impact of mining operations, and leave mine sites in an acceptable state for reuse by people or systems. Practices such as isolation of soil and earth material, stabilization of slopes and amendments of sites to be restored should be highly considered in the process of rehabilitation of affected sites.
In this thesis we study efficient time integration methods for linear parabolic PDEs to solve practical problems that arise in a variety of real-world applications. The classical construction of numerical methods for solving PDEs is based on the method of lines, which leads to a large sparse semi-discretised system of ODEs to which any numerical method for initial value ODE problems can be applied. When dealing with parabolic-type problems, the underlying ODE systems are known to be stiff. Therefore, in the context of linear model problems, the use of implicit schemes is usually considered to be the best choice in practice.
However, this statement is not correct for some relevant real-world applications. In particular, implicit schemes can cause high computational costs that are equipped with certain model conditions. The model problems considered here are coupled with various settings, ranging from many different initial conditions over long-term simulation with relatively frequent model updates, to dealing with very large-scale problems for which the matrix size can exceed several millions. For this reason, we are interested in sophisticated and computationally efficient numerical methods that bring the aspects of approximation accuracy as well as computational and storage complexity into balance.
Even nowadays it is still a challenging task to devise a numerical method that combines high accuracy, robustness and computational efficiency for the model problem to be solved. Therefore, the main objective is to find an easy and efficient ODE integration scheme for each individual model problem. On this basis, we first give a comprehensive introduction to the state-of-the-art methods that are often used for practical purposes. In this framework, we will investigate very detailed the theoretical and numerical foundations of two popular techniques, namely the fast explicit methods and the model order reduction techniques. This is primarily important in order to fully understand the numerical methods, and also absolutely essential in finding the best numerical method that is specifically suitable for the intended purpose.
Our second goal is then to efficiently solve the practical problems that arise in connection with shape correspondence, geothermal energy storage and image osmosis filtering. For each application we specify a complete setup, and in order to provide an efficient and accurate numerical approximation, we give a thorough discussion of the various numerical solvers along with many technical details and own adaptations. We validate our numerical findings through many experiments using synthetic and real-world data. In addition, the thesis provides a complete and detailed description of the powerful methods that can be very useful for tackling similar problems that are the subject of interest in many applications.
We consider two mathematical problems that are connected and occur in the layer-wise production process of a workpiece using Wire-Arc Additive Manufacturing. As the first task, we consider the automatic construction of a honeycomb structure, given the boundary of a shape of interest. In doing this we employ Lloyd’s algorithm in two different realizations. For computing the incorporated Voronoi tesselation we consider the use of a Delaunay triangulation or alternatively, the eikonal equation. We compare and modify these approaches with the aim of combining their respective advantages.
Then in the second task, to find an optimal tool path guaranteeing minimal production time and high quality of the workpiece, a mixed-integer linear programming problem is derived. The model takes thermal conduction and radiation during the process into account and aims to minimize temperature gradients inside the material. Its solvability for standard mixed-integer solvers is demonstrated on several test-instances. The results are compared with manufactured workpieces.
Recent challenges and novel approaches of wireless communication networks are characterized by high performance requirements on the radio channel and by concepts of self-organization, in-network processing, or resource optimization which ultimately lead to distributed network applications, communication architectures, and radio transceivers.
Associated evaluation is driven by a multitude of ever-increasing requirements that call for multidisciplinary expertise. Depending on the discipline, simulation is one of the most widely used technologies, whereby often abstract assumptions and models do not allow for sufficiently accurate, comparable results.
In contrast, real-world measurements and field-tests can only be performed on actual systems, commonly under non-reproducible conditions.
This thesis establishes with the Split-Protocol-Stack a new type of evaluation method that intends to help closing the gap between purely simulative analyzes and real-world tests.
With the inclusion of real radio hardware and radio channels in the event-based simulation, this central hybrid approach in connection with the Radio-in-the-Loop methodology creates synergies in interdisciplinary fields.
The approach contains analytical discussions, methodological strategies, and practical contributions that are summarized as key elements in the subsequent central considerations and challenges.
With Real-Time-Shift, a pseudo-real-time synchronization approach for parallel simulation and radio channel emulation of communication flows is introduced.
Based on the underlying time compensation scheme, the discrete event simulation is decoupled from real-time constraints when exchanging event messages with real-world wireless hardware.
A physical layer emulation methodology and radio channel interface concept, called Radio-in-the-Loop, is introduced along with two practical realization approaches.
Furthermore, strategic details on radio network planning with an approach to automatic hardware resource allocation are presented for radio channel emulation-capable network testbeds.
The contributions of this work are evaluated using real-world reference measurements, practical application scenarios, and experiments that provide proof of concepts.
By means of an exemplary selected cross-layer optimization scenario, the benefits are practically demonstrated and discussed.
Finally, based on IEEE 802.15.4 as the reference protocol standard for low-power wireless networks, this thesis provides feasibility studies and analysis results using the representative prototype SEmulate for the Split-Protocol-Stack approach.
This study describes the seasonal course of denitrifying and nitrate-reducing bacteria in a dimictic mesotrophic lake (Lake Scharmützelsee, Brandenburg, Germany) within a three-year period from 2011 to 2013. The bacterial cell numbers were quantified by the fluorescence microscopy, most probable number (MPN) and PCR-dependent quantification of the chromosomal 16S rDNA and of the nirS and nirK gene copy number. The highest seasonal differences (up to three orders of magnitudes) have been measured usingMPNin the epilimnion. This variation was not reflected by PCR-dependent approaches or direct microscopical enumeration. At adverse conditions (low temperature and/or low nitrate concentrations), the differences between MPN and gene copy numbers increased by up to five orders of magnitudes and decreased to one magnitude at favourable environmental conditions. These results can be explained best by an increasing ratio of viable but not cultivable (VBNC) cells or dead cells at impairing conditions. In the hypolimnion, the courses of MPN and nir gene copy numbers were similar. This can be explained by a higher feeding pressure and therefore smaller amounts of dormant cells. In the pelagial in general, the total cell numbers enumerated by either microscopical or molecular approaches were similar. In the sediment, more than 99% of the DNA was obviously not related to viable bacteria but was rather DNA in dead cells or adsorbed to particle surfaces.
In the last 30 years, communication became one of the most important pillars of our civilization. Every day terabytes of information are moved wired and wireless between computers. In order to transport this amount of data, researchers and industry increase the data rates of the underlying communication networks with impressive speed. However, such ultra-high data rates are unavailable at the communication endpoints.
One reason why ultra-high data rates are still not available for the communication endpoints is their inability to handle the protocol processing at this data rate. In order to enable communication endpoints to process high-volume data streams, the protocol processing has to be parallelized and optimized on all processing levels. However, parallelization and optimization are cumbersome tasks, which are further complicated as the protocol processing is traditionally carried out by the operating system.
This thesis aims at circumventing these problems by moving the protocol processing into external processing hardware and interpreting communication protocols as stream processing problems. In order to achieve ultra-high data rates at the communication endpoints, a protocol stream processing design approach was developed and evaluated. The design process is separated into implementation, soft real-time analysis, parallelization, and mapping steps, which allow a scalable protocol implementation without paradigm changes. Furthermore, a data link protocol for 100 Gbit/s wireless was developed and implemented with the new stream processing design concept, in order to show its feasibility. The data link protocol is configurable for different communication conditions and easy to parallelize by providing different granularities of packets. The proposed design-process has shown to be suitable for uncovering bottlenecks and helping with debugging the individual stages of the protocol.
In 2012 a group of researchers proposed a basic research initiative to the German Research Foundation (DFG) as a special priority project (SPP) with the name: Wireless 100 Gbps and beyond. The main goal of this initiative was the investigation of architectures, technologies and methods to go well beyond the state of the art. The target of 100 Gbps was set far away from the (at that time) achievable 1 Gbps such that it was not possible to achieve promising results just by tuning some parameters. We wanted to find breakthrough solutions. When we started the work on the proposal we discussed the challenges to be addressed in order to advancing the wireless communication speed significantly. Having the fundamental Shannon boundary in mind we discussed how to achieve the 100 Gbps speed.

Having the fundamental Shannon boundary in mind we discussed how to achieve the 100 Gbps speed.
Digital humanity: the temporal and semantic structure of dynamic conversational facial expressions
(2019)
This thesis focuses on establishing a - theoretically founded and empirically derived - novel methodological pipeline to provide Embodied Conversational Agents (ECAs) with natural facial expressions and desired personality traits.
After giving an overview on the content of this thesis, we dedicate its second part to derive the Semantic Space (SSp) for facial expressions, finding that the same space is used for expression words, expression videos, and motion-capture-based point-cloud animations. The process involved the creation of a new facial expression database using Motion Capture (MoCap) technology. Our technique can be used to empirically map specific motion trajectories (including their frequency-decomposition) onto specific perceptual attributes, allowing the targeted creation of novel animations with the desired perceptual traits, as exemplified in the third part of this thesis. Before addressing our final conclusions and, on the grounds that the systematic differences between individuals while performing the same facial expressions are related to their personality, we devote the fourth part of this thesis to the study of the mapping between personality and expressive facial motions.
Abhängigkeitsgraphen zueinander in Beziehung gesetzt.
Salvaging Buildings : reclaiming a livelihood from the excesses of Istanbul's mass urbanization
(2023)
Turkey’s demolition waste management is, to a great extent, dependent on çıkmacıs (reclaimers) who salvage condemned buildings for raw materials and architectural elements. Its urbanization history is full of key moments marked by building demolitions, which became a necessary material resource for informal urbanization. As early as the 1970s, the çıkmacıs helped the gecekondus [squatter houses] by supplying second-hand building materials and construction loans. They managed to turn a lack of infrastructure into an advantage and remain very adaptable to the ever-changing conditions of neo-liberalized urbanization. They depend on solidarity networks and other informal resources. Assemblage thinking helps to redefine the concept of informality, understand the relational dynamics between various actors, and focus on the agency of materials. The empirical data gained from ‘follow the thing’ ethnographic research in Turkey and Georgia reveals the double lives of çıkmacıs who move between village and city. Additionally, by following the example of a reclaimed window frame’s journey from Istanbul to Tbilisi, we can more clearly see the second-hand trade network in the context of urbanization and incremental architecture. In the context of waste’s materiality, the empirical part of the research shows the symbiotic relationship between çıkmacıs and the discarded demolition materials.
With the recent developments in electrical transmission system, HVDC transmission for long distances has become feasible. With this development, many insulators are being used in HVDC system. Different kinds of insulators are situated at different places (example: desert, near to sea, agriculture area, etc.) so they will get expose to different types of pollution. Pollution affects the behavior of insulation in terms of breakdown and withstand capability. The application experience of insulators under HVDC conditions is limited. There is a necessity to understand the flashover performance and to recognize key parameters in the design and dimensioning of insulators used under HVDC conditions. This dissertation presents the difference between the analysis of partial breakdowns at AC and DC.
The dissertation explains the behavior of a water drop on insulator shed surface energized with DC. It deals with the moving water drop and hanging drop at the edge of the shed.
There are many situations where insulator structure should be in parallel. For example, the structure of insulators in vertical disconnector equipment often is parallel. If insulators are arranged in parallel, then the behavior of the electric field is totally different. It is important to know the behavior of these insulators used in HVDC system. This report also explains the pollution and non-pollution behavior of parallel insulators energized with DC.
The results can be a source of information to optimize the design and dimensioning of HVDC insulators, especially in pollution conditions.
Tanzania is the land which has extensive Limestone Caves along the Swahili Coast of East Africa. Many of these Limestone Caves believed to be formed about 150 million years ago during the Jurassic age when these areas were underwater. For a long time, Swahili communities along the coast of East Africa used the Limestone Caves as the places of worship, praying and conducting ritual practices. These Limestone Caves have been regarded as the Mosques, Churches or Temples by these Swahili communities who have been associated with the Caves for a long time before colonial time in 17th-19th Century. After independence in 1961, the Tanzanian government took over many of the Limestone Caves to manage and protect them as the national heritage under the Antiquities Divisions and other heritage governing bodies. However, in Tanzania the protection of Limestone Caves as Sacred Heritage Places have been only through modern laws which were inherited from colonial masters and are yet to produce satisfactory results on the best practice of these places, even after amendments. Other problems facing Sacred Heritage Places in Tanzania are lack of management plans, lack of freedom in worship and failure of Antiquities legislation to recognise traditional beliefs. These problems led to growing concern of different stakeholders regarding the government strategy to ensure prescriptions for best practices of the Sacred Heritage Places in Limestone Cave areas regarding the use, management and conservation.
Therefore, the purpose of this thesis is to examine the use and management of Sacred Heritage Places along the Swahili Coast of the Indian Ocean in Tanzania. Data were obtained through focus group discussions, interviews and observations while legal documents were reviewed and analysed using thematic analysis to investigate research themes. The results indicated that there were ritual practices, strict taboos and customary laws used to control access into the Limestone Cave area but tourism and research activities have interfered with the sacred space creating a disconnect between the local communities and their heritage. This disconnection has driven people from their traditional religions into religions like Christianity and Islam.
Finally, the thesis proposes MTRCC Framework for a heritage plan for best practice in Sacred Heritage Place in Limestone Cave areas; to be adopted by the Tanzanian Antiquities Divisions and other heritage management authorities to ensure that local communities have access to spaces crucial to their religious life. Also, MTRCC Framework ensures that there are no conflicts or
interference from tourism, education and research activities that could result in negative effects for the heritage sites and stakeholders can have equal opportunities to experience these places.
This study explores the interplay between the UNESCO status and climate governance in World Heritage cities. With climate change posing significant threats to living urban landscapes, local governments and public actors strive to implement sustainable and resilient strategies. However, complications arise when cities attain the World Heritage status, complicating climate governance practices. Qualitative research, involving interviews with key stakeholders from the Climate and Monument Protection Departments in Lübeck, Regensburg, and Bamberg, reveals a negative impact of cultural heritage on climate governance. The study contends that, when harnessed effectively, cultural heritage can contribute to the sustainability and resilience of cities in addressing climate change. It emphasises the necessity for flexibility, collaboration, and a human-centric approach, advocating for a common understanding and prioritisation of human life within climate governance. In conclusion, this research underscores the importance of viewing heritage as a dynamic component integrated into cities' climate governance strategies.
This doctoral research examines community participation in decision-making for Cultural Heritage Tourism (CHT) in Nizamuddin Basti and Shahjahanabad, historical sites in New Delhi, India. It includes three papers addressing community participation barriers, resident motivation, and collective action dilemmas using the Institutional Analysis and Development-Network of Adjacent Action Situations (IAD-NAAS) framework.
The study identifies four main barriers: institutional constraints, limited awareness, capacity issues, and cultural norms inhibiting residents' involvement in CHT decision-making. Despite these obstacles, the community's deep attachment to the area's heritage, appreciation of tangible and intangible heritage, and recognition of communal benefits motivate participation.
Using the IAD-NAAS framework, the research unravels collective action dilemmas, emphasizing how individual actions in one context can impact actions in adjacent contexts. Key action situations are monument conservation, local community livelihood development, tourism development, and community decision-making participation.
Through in-depth interviews, the study garners a rich understanding of barriers and motivations for community participation. It highlights the role of community involvement in creating inclusive, diverse heritage narratives, challenging the conventional discourses dominating heritage narratives. Thus, fostering a democratic and inclusive approach to heritage.
The economic crises of the mid 1980s and 1990s due to a fall in economic productivity inflicted serious negative consequences on Cameroon’s forest ecosystems and forest resources which became the target of intense exploitation for multiple purposes. A forest policy reform at the behest of the World Bank was intended to regulate forest exploitation in a sustainable way. More than a decade since the inception of this policy, this study, through a three-tier methodological approach of survey, content analysis and observation, seeks to assess policy impacts per se, as well as the role of environmental communication in mitigating non-sustainable forest exploitation in Anglophone Cameroon. The study also investigates a valid and reliable option for the sustainable management of forest resources, by comparing and contrasting the two operational forest management paradigms. The outcome of the investigation reveals that both policy and environmental communication have a more positive impact in the community forest area than in the state-managed forest area, implying that the former is a better forest management option than the latter. However, forest sustainability is still at stake in both areas, due, generally, to bad forest governance such as corruption, minimal public participation, lack of transparency and accountability, as well as the ubiquitous presence of poverty, unemployment and inadequate public access to socio-economic development indicators. To this end, the study proffers some robust recommendations that if implemented will greatly enhance the badly needed forest sustainability.
Malawi is a Least Developed Country located in Southern Africa to the East of Zambia. Malawi has a low electrification rate of 9%. Furthermore, unreliable and inadequate power supply are estimated to reduce Malawi’s GDP by 7%-9%. These energy sector challenges diminish the country’s prospects for sustained growth, poverty reduction, and improved delivery of health and education services. Various studies have been undertaken to determine how Malawi can improve it's energy sector through the deployment of renewable energy. However, these studies have not specifically examined how climate change related financing mechanisms such as the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) could be utilised to mobilise financing and capacity development for renewable energy deployment in the country. This is despite the assertion that developed countries are committed to jointly mobilising US$100 billion per year by 2020 to support climate change mitigation and adaptation activities such as renewable energy deployment in developing countries. Through the use of questionnaires, case study analyses, policy reviews, academic literature reviews and interviews, this research sought to determine Malawi’s regulatory and institutional challenges and prospects for enhancing renewable energy deployment through climate finance instruments.
Among some of the research findings was that Malawi has relied on external support in order to develop capacity in the field of climate finance, hence in the absence of external assistance there are limited opportunities to incentivise various stakeholders to implement projects and to enhance awareness about climate finance. The study also discovered that Malawi’s climate finance determinants resemble a non-market seeking Foreign Direct Investment profile, hence the presence of opportunities for cheap and abundant emission reductions could improve climate finance investment patterns rather than the opportunities for emission reductions and co-products such as electricity through renewable energy technologies. The study therefore recommended that Malawi should create a renewable energy and climate finance promotion agency to assist with soliciting funding for renewable energy projects from concessional and non-concessional sources and drafting and implementing renewable energy policies. Another recommendation was that the country must create a Renewable Energy Fund to reduce the funding constraints that the media, project implementers and financiers have in undertaking various roles related to enhancing renewable energy deployment. Lastly, the study concluded that Malawi’s prospects for accessing various forms of climate finance and deploying climate finance projects can be improved through improvements in Malawi’s renewable energy and climate change institutional framework, and the modifications of climate finance instruments and methodologies to encourage flexibility and reduce institutional constraints.

Reproducibility of simulation experiments is still a significant challenge and has attracted considerable attention in recent years. One cause of this situation is bad habits of the scientific community. Many results are published without data or source code, and only a textual description of the simulation set-up is provided. Other causes are: no complete simulation set-up, no proper output data analysis and inconsistency of published data, which makes it impossible to compare results.
The progress of computational modelling, amount of data and complexity of models requires designing experiments in such a way that ensures reproducibility. A textual description does not provide all the needed details. A computer code is more reliable than a textual description. It is the precise specification that describes a simulation configuration, model, etc. When computer code, data, models and all parameters are provided, the simulation results become reproducible.
The main goal of this thesis is to develop a tool that ensures reproducibility and efficient execution of simulation experiments, often involving many individual simulation runs. The tool should support a wide range of application scenarios, where the typical scenario is simulation of biochemical reaction networks, which are represented as (coloured) Petri nets interpreted in the stochastic, continuous or hybrid paradigm. The model to be simulated can be given in various formats, including SBML.
The result is a command line tool called Spike, which can be used for various scenarios, including benchmarking, simulation of adaptive models and parameter optimization. It builds on a human-readable configuration script SPC, supporting the efficient specification of multiple model configurations as well as multiple simulator configurations in a single configuration file.
Groundwater is the main source for potable water and domestic use in numerous countries around the world. However, water quality can be affected by pollution, which influences the natural environment and human health. One of the widespread pollutants in water is ammonia which is toxic to fish and causes eutrophication of lakes and wetlands. Constructed wetlands are promising in situ water treatment methods thanks to enhanced microbial growth within the plants’ rhizospheres, which creates an effective contaminant degradation zone. The ammonia in constructed wetlands can be removed either via total nitrification with further denitrification or partial nitrification coupled with anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox). However, so far, the role of anammox in constructed wetlands as well as its correlation with other nitrogen transformations remains unclear. The quantification of nitrogen turnover processes in constructed wetlands is difficult due to the complexity of the wetland systems.
Accordingly, the main aim of this research is to investigate pathways of ammonium removal in constructed wetlands treating contaminated groundwater. For this, several approaches were applied: a) physico-chemical parameters measurements; b) investigations of nitrogen stable isotope fractionation; c) stable isotope labelling approach; d) molecular biological methods. Also, seasonal and spatial variations in nitrogen transformations in several types of constructed wetlands (unplanted horizontal subsurface flow, planted horizontal subsurface flow, and floating plant root mat) were investigated.
The application of the stable isotope approach combined with common physico-chemical investigations enabled us to identify key factors influencing efficiency of nitrogen removal in constructed wetlands, which was the plant presence as substrate for attachment and growth of microorganisms. Ammonium removal efficiencies were not different between investigated seasons (spring, summer, and autumn), what could be explained by the fact that throughout all investigated seasons the air temperature remained high (above 10°C). While plant uptake accounted for significant part of ammonium removal during spring and summer in planted constructed wetlands, isotope fractionation patterns revealed that nitrification-denitrification were prevailing processes in planted constructed wetlands throughout the year, occurring in a linear way along the flow path, and not depending on depth in the root zone.
The research results also illustrated that in the planted horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetland, the functional genes of the nitrogen cycle were evenly distributed in a linear way along the flow path with prevalence at the superficial points. The same trend was observed for the nitrification and denitrification turnover rates using the isotope labeling techniques. Significant nitrate consumption under aerobic conditions diminishes nitrification rates and should therefore be taken into account when estimating nitrification turnover rates. This nitrate consumption was due to aerobic denitrification, the rate of which was comparable to that for anaerobic denitrification. Consequently, denitrification should not be considered as an exclusively anaerobic process. Phylogenetic analysis of hydrazine synthase (hzsA) gene clones indicated the presence of Brocadia and Kuenenia anammox species in the constructed wetland. Although anammox bacteria were detected by molecular methods, anammox activity could not be measured and hence this process appears to be of low importance in nitrogen transformations in these freshwater ecosystems.
In conclusion, this research demonstrated that combination of physico-chemical measurements with stable isotope and molecular biological approaches is an effective tool for investigation of nitrogen transforming processes in constructed wetlands. Such information is not only valuable for understanding of the processes ongoing inside these wastewater treatment facilities but also necessary for further technological improvement of constructed wetlands.
Adhesive bonding is the preferred bonding method for a lot of different application because of is particularities. As an example, adhesive bonding does not require to drill holes like for riveting or screwing. Thin and fragile material as well as of different arts can be successfully joined using adhesives. Moreover, adhesive bonding provides a uniform load distribution within the bonding joint during mechanical load. For these reasons, adhesive bonding should be used systemically for joining fiber reinforced polymers, since the fibers would be damaged by drilled holes. The mechanical properties of the parts given by the fibers would then remain. The problem is that it is very difficult to separate adhesively bonded structures. The first layer of fibers is often damaged by rough mechanical separation, or the resin matrix is damaged because of high temperatures applied. For these reasons, fibers reinforced polymers are up to now still very often screwed or riveted. New adhesive systems that allow debonding of structural bonding joints are developed and investigated in this work. For this purpose, epoxide and polyurethane adhesive are modified with foaming agents that weaken the adhesive above their expansion temperature. These modified adhesive should keep properties as close as possible to the properties of the unmodified adhesives. The expansion temperature should be above the upper service temperature of the adhesive as far as possible but also below the limit of the thermal stability of the substrates. This is contradictory and the window of temperature at which the expansion should take place is very narrow. In a second method, a commercial electrically disbonding adhesive is used in combination with fiber reinforced polymer substrates. This adhesive can be electrically disbonded by applying a voltage at the terminals of the adhesive. Therefore, electrically conductive substrates are necessary and the metallization of the fiber reinforced polymer substrates is investigated.
The oxy-fuel combustion process with subsequent CO2 storage has received attention as a promising technology for capturing CO2 from fossil fuel power plants. Recent progress in understanding pulverized coal combustion under oxy-fired conditions is attributable in part to studies performed at laboratory bench-scale. Previous investigations have underlined some significant differences between conventional air-fired and oxy-fired combustion with regard to temperature, heat flux distribution, and pollutant emissions. While most studies provide information on the impacts of O2 concentration in the feed gas, the impact of burner configuration and operating settings on oxy-coal combustion have been investigated by only a handful of studies. The present study addresses the impact of oxy-fired conditions on the chemistry and dynamics of pulverized coal flames generated by a staged feed-gas burner operating with pre-dried lignite. Investigations were carried out in a newly constructed test facility where the combustion takes place in a horizontal up-fired furnace with a rated capacity of 0.40 MWth. Since the focus of this work is on adapting oxy-fuel combustion techniques to existing furnaces, great emphasis is placed on maintaining flame temperatures and heat transfer similar to that of conventional air combustion. The strategy adopted to investigate the impacts of burner settings is divided into theoretical and experimental investigations. In the theoretical study, the combustion-related parameters are calculated based on thermodynamic balances and act as a background for the definition of some important operating settings. Non-reacting flow simulations which include the burner and part of the furnace are performed using a CFD commercial code aimed at a qualitative evaluation of feed gas distribution and swirl strength on the flow pattern formed in the near burner region. These predictions assist in the interpretation of the experimental data and in the calculation of the swirl number at the exit of the burner. During the experimental investigations, the characteristics of diffusion flames were first investigated in a parametric study to evaluate the impact of secondary swirl numbers at three levels and secondary/tertiary flow ratios on the overall combustion performance. The second part of the test program involved detailed in-flame measurements for selected flames. Measurements of local gas temperature, gas species concentrations, and radiative heat flux were performed with standard water-cooled probes with special focus on the near burner region. Theoretical and experimental studies are also carried out under air-fired conditions and used as a benchmark throughout this study. The overall O2 fraction upstream of the burner was kept at 31 vol% and was defined with basis on a similar adiabatic flame temperature as air-firing. Flame stabilization was shown to be strongly dependent on the O2 fraction of the primary stream, feed gas distribution between the secondary and tertiary registers, and strength of the secondary swirl. Type-1 flames operating at a stoichiometric ratio of 1.17 were generated under air-fired and oxy-fired conditions and investigated in detail. Detailed flow pattern and flame structure studies show evidence of radial flame stratification consistent with gradual O2 admixing to the central fuel jet. Increasing the swirl number and the secondary/tertiary flow ratio enhances the mixing of coal particles and increases the temperatures close to burner. Much lower temperatures on the flame axis are observed under oxy-fired conditions. In the same region, higher CO concentrations were also observed, possibly as a result of CO2 dissociation and/or gasification reactions by water vapor and CO2 which contribute to lower temperatures. Very low CO concentration at the furnace exit and high particle burnout indicate that oxy-fired conditions are not an obstacle to achieving a high combustion efficiency for type-1 flames. Although SO2 concentrations were higher under oxy-fired conditions, the emission rates were very similar, indicating that SO2 emissions are exclusively dependent on the sulfur content of the coal. Experimental data obtained from the parametric study and in-flame measurements suggest great potential for NO abatement through flame aerodynamics for oxy-coal combustion. The experiments demonstrate that feed gas staging in a burner is an effective technique for improving the flame stratification in fuel-rich and fuel-lean zones. In particular, a combination of high swirl and high secondary/tertiary flow ratio results in significant NO reduction.
This thesis addresses fundamental physical processes which take place at the surface region of a target during and after the interaction with ultra-short laser pulses. The general goal is to bring together different phenomena and discuss the non-equilibrium nature of the interaction of femtosecond laser pulses (tp < 100 fs) with various materials, in particular dielectrics and semiconductors. Different experiments, using various techniques, are designed to explore the basic mechanisms of laser ionization, defect creation, electron-lattice energetic transfer, charged particles desorption, optical breakdown, phase transformations and surface morphological changes. Such processes are shown to depend strongly on the laser intensity. Thus, they are analyzed for intensities over four orders of magnitude (10^11-10^14 W/cm2), around the surface optical breakdown (damage) threshold intensity. First, experimental studies using time-of-flight mass spectrometry indicate that non-resonant intense ultra-short laser pulses can efficiently ionize a dielectric (semiconducting) material leading to emission of electrons as well as charged particles, i.e. atomic ions and large clusters, and neutral particles. Under these irradiation conditions, the ionization processes can be at best described by multiphoton ionization and ionization at defects sites. The structural defects provide the means for an increased positive ion desorption rate. A multiple pulse incubation effect in the ion yield can be well related with the reduction of the multi-pulse damage threshold with increasing intensity. Following the initial electron excitation and emission, positive ions are released from the surface in a substantial amount with high ion velocities indicative of a localized microscopic electrostatic expulsion. With increasing intensity, the amount of ions gets larger and larger and their velocity distribution exhibits a bimodal structure. Also, in these conditions, negative ions are detected. The ion desorption can arise from a combination of a localized electrostatic repulsion (macroscopic Coulomb explosion) and a thermal ‘explosive’ mechanism. The later becomes more important with increasing intensity. The very fast energy input and particle emission result in a transient perturbation and deformation of the target lattice. Using pump-probe experiments the temporal evolution of lattice dynamics can be analyzed upon single-pulse excitation for many different target materials. This deformation is indicated to be a material characteristic. It is associated with the generation of transient defects in dielectrics or fast phase transitions in semiconductors and metals. Therefore, it could well give estimates of lifetime of transient defect states or electron-phonon relaxation times. At last the surface morphology after ablation is analyzed, with emphasis on the laser-induced surface periodic patterns (ripples). The patterns observed appear to be very different from the ‘classical’ ripples formed after long pulse ablation. They can have periods much smaller than the incident wavelength and are rather insensitive to the variation of the laser wavelength and angle of incidence. We show that control factors are laser beam polarization and the irradiation dose. Additionally, the patterns exhibit features pointing toward a chaotic origin. Their possible formation mechanism is likely linked with the non-equilibrium nature of the interaction.
Implementation of End-of-Life Vehicle’s Recycling for Developing Countries: Case Study, Mexico
(2008)
Currently, the Directive 2000/53/EC regulates the ELV management in 27 countries in Europe, and for the forthcoming years, more accession countries are foreseen. Since, the international nature of automotive industry, the Directive has affected industries beyond the EU. Hence, countries with important national-based automotive industry are moving towards the accomplishment of this legislation, in order to keep their competitiveness in European markets. The ELV chain in the EU is a complex system, which involves several commercial relationships between different sectors. The generation of ELV in the EU-15 was around 11.4 million units in 2005. The total number of ELV generated, considering the accessing countries, is still unknown. The number of treated ELV in the EU-15 was 7.7 million units. There are some obstacles to be overcome by ELV management already in implementation in the EU. The main difficulties are related to the reluctance of car-manufacture industry to implement Directive’s provisions related to: ban of use of specific substances in automotive applications, and about recycling quotas. Another obstacle is the export of ELV from the EU, which represents a loss in input material for the system. The case of the USA, regarding the ELV management, has very different connotations than the implemented system in the EU. The current ELV management in the USA does not have specific regulations regarding the collection and recycling of ELV. The structure of the ELV chain in the USA is similar to its counterpart in the EU. The main difference lies in dismantling and post-shredder sectors. The 80% of dismantling industry is composed of salvage/scrap yards performing no-standardized operations, and the remaining 20% is represented by high value parts dismantlers. One special feature of the system is the classification of ASR as no-hazardous waste which generates almost no incentives for further treatment. The current system of ELV management in the USA works with relative efficiency. However, there are still items to be improved, e.g. poor dismantling practices in a big number of dismantling facilities (scrap yards), use of hazardous materials in car-manufacture, disposal of ASR as non-hazardous waste, scrap tyres, etc. The ELV problem has different connotation in developing countries like Mexico, than in industrialized countries. Problems, like illegal introduction of used cars from the USA to Mexico and poor practices in the management of ELV, affect the Mexican economy, environment and society. In Mexico, there exists no specific legislation to regulate the Management of ELV. This kind of product, at its End-of-Life stage and wastes generated by its treatment, has been ruled by general laws before the year 2004. More recently a semi-specific law has been addressed to solid wastes, the LGPGIR. The structure of ELV chain in Mexico is similar to its counterpart in the USA and the EU, except for an additional stage. The present work depicts the available information about the number of Mexican operators, at every stage of ELV management. The described evidence presents a deficient management of ELV in Mexico. The current management allows a maximum recycling rate of 75%, which mainly corresponds to the ferrous fraction content in vehicles which enters to the management system. The present work develops a proposal for a suitable system to manage End-of-Life Vehicles (ELV) in a developing country, case study Mexico. This, is divided in three main parts. As a first step, the proposal estimates the future numbers of ELV generated in Mexico, which are estimated in a current ELV generation of around 687,000 vehicles by 2007, and by 2020 in the range of 1.1 to 1.3 million units per year. The second step is to propose a structure for the ELV chain in Mexico. The proposed structure describes the recommended operations, equipment and facilities’ configuration at every stage of the management. The third step of the proposal is the configuration of strategic facility network at every stage of ELV management in Mexico. The system is configured under assumption of three different scenarios, i.e. 100%, 90% and 75% of covered demand for ELV management. The algorithm is identified for this specific problem as a Fixed Charge Facility Location Problem. The algorithm is solved through Facility Location Software SITATION©. The results show the optimal number of facilities at every stage of the management, to cover the demand for ELV management considered in the different scenarios. The fourth part is to propose a model to finance the ELV management in Mexico. The main features of this scheme are explained, as well as its advantages, disadvantages and incentives thought to be triggered into the Mexican ELV chain.
Approaches to restore post-mining areas should provide sustainable solutions for recovering biodiversity and ecosystem services in regions experiencing massive deforestation. Key components that are impacted by surface mining activities and that restoration intervention should therefore target are biodiversity attributes and ecosystem service provisioning. The consequences of restoration decisions in post-mining areas in the Afrotropical region (here Ghana) remain understudied. To this end, l assessed levels of soil properties, biodiversity and ecosystem service in a post-mining area after two decades of active forest restoration by comparing them to attributes of the surrounding dominant land-use types. l hypothesized that (i) the interventions applied to restore and manage a post-mining area improve ecosystem attributes beyond conditions observed in the alternative dominant land-use types and even reaching levels comparable to reference forest (Chapter III), (ii) soil conditions and the functional structure of tree communities drive ecosystem functions and multifunctionality, with highest multifunctionality levels in the restored and natural forests (Chapter IV), (iii) the structure of tree communities coupled with pronounced climatic seasonality support a higher number of arthropods and arthropod functional groups particularly in the wet season and in structurally heterogeneous land-use types (Chapter V), and (iv) active forest restoration enhances the levels of ecosystem service provision similar to the reference forest with possible trade-offs or synergies among individual ecosystem services across forest types (Chapter VI). Chapter I provides an introduction to deforestation, and further highlights global and national initiatives, including active forest restoration, to reverse or minimize the impacts of tropical deforestation. Chapter II details the methodological approaches applied for sampling. Chapter III focussed on soil properties in addition to below and above-ground biomass of trees. The characteristic soil attributes for the restored forest were not significantly different from those in the reference forest, except for bulk density and base saturation, but differed significantly from attributes in all other land-use types. Chapter IV focussed on how the functional structure of tree communities affects the provision of ecosystem services. For functional composition, both the leaf economic spectrum and the seed mass dimensions separated different land-use types. Chapter V addresses the research question on how post-mining restoration affects arthropod communities. Communities of ground-active arthropods differed significantly between land-use types depending on the season. By quantifying the various ecosystem attributes in the field and transforming them into ecosystem service proxies, l could primarily identify synergies with no apparent trade-off between ecosystem services across the forest land-use types (Chapter VI).
This thesis focuses on the deposition of thin TiO₂ films on p-type Si using atomic layer deposition (ALD) technique, on the study of the electronic proprieties of the grown films and on the electrochemical characterization of TiO₂/Si photoelectrodes. The deposition parameters, electronic properties and electrochemical performance and stability of the TiO₂/Si samples are correlated.
The ALD technique is used to deposit TiO₂ with two different precursors namely Titanium isopropoxide and Titanium methoxide onto Si substrates. Laboratory as well as synchrotron based X-ray spectroscopy techniques are used to characterize these films. The growth quality of the TiO₂ ALD films is determined by analyzing X-Ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) data in terms of stoichiometry, defect states and Ti³⁺:Ti⁴⁺ ratios. The ALD technique was modified with different heating arrangements to obtain various polymorphs of TiO₂.
The ALD and anatase TiO₂ films are characterized using synchrotron radiation to study their electronic properties and these films are compared with single crystal rutile TiO₂. X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and resonant photoelectron spectroscopy (res-PES) measurements are performed with synchrotron radiation. XAS measurements are used to determine the polymorphs as well as the electronic structure of TiO₂ Res-PES measurements are conducted at the O1s and Ti2p edges to study multiple hole Auger decay processes and polaronic and charge transfer states as well as to determine the electronic band gap of the TiO₂ layers. One of the main findings of this thesis is the determination of the partial density of states (pDOS) of O and Ti in the conduction and valence band. The combination of the pDOS and the band edge positions obtained from res-PES measurements are used to calculate the charge neutrality level of the TiO₂ polymorphs.
The photoelectrochemical measurements are conducted on bare-Si and TiO₂/Si photoelectrodes. The electrochemical performance of these photoelectrodes is studied in electrolytes having pH values ranging from 1 to 13. The deposition of TiO₂ on Si enhances the photoelectrochemical performance of the Si photoelectrode. The TiO₂ increases the stability of the photoelectrode in all electrochemical media over 12 hours of experimental condition. Moreover, it is also observed that the TiO₂/Si photoelectrode is less responsive to the pH value of the electrolyte. The electrochemical findings are explained on the basis of the electronic properties of the TiO₂ layer. The electronic band gap obtained from spectroscopic measurement and the photoelectrochemical measurements are used to explain the performance and stability of the TiO₂/Si photoelectrodes. The thesis also addresses the stability of Si microstructured photoelectrodes (SiMPs) prepared by an electrochemical method. The stability of the SiMPs deteriorates more rapidly than that one of the planar Si photoelectrode. However, using a protective ALD TiO₂ layer on these SiMPs the overall performance is even more enhanced than on the TiO₂/planar Si system.
The range of application of fatty acids is as broad and varied as the diverse kinds of fatty acids themselves, stretching from bulk scale productions as in the case of biodiesel or lubricant manufacturing over consumer or end products like cosmetics, medicinal or nutritional additives to relatively smaller scale specialty chemicals like epoxy resins, insect repellents and so on. The crystallization temperatures of the unsaturated fatty acids are much lower than those of the saturated ones, which is an important and desirable property for raw materials such as in the production of epoxy resins. Separation and purification of these enriched unsaturated fatty acid fractions depending on their applications is mainly performed by two thermal fractionation processes, namely, distillation and crystallization. The potential behind the success of purification of these multi-component organic fatty acid mixtures with the help of melt crystallization, apart from the fact that it is cost effective owing to the obvious reduction of solvent removal and regeneration steps, is that of the relatively large differences in the melting points of the individual fatty acids.
A detailed and fundamental understanding of the crystallization especially nucleation kinetics of a variety of vegetable oil based fatty acid mixtures has been provided in this work. It also describes the solid-liquid phase diagrams of these poly-unsaturated mixtures including their metastable zone widths of nucleation and solidification. This theoretical part of this thesis is a detailed resource on the global production and application of vegetable oils and their derivatives. A clear mathematical and physical road map for the application of the Fisher Turnbull model to calculate the enthalpy values starting from the very basic supersaturation equation has been established and extensively explained as well. Nucleation studies have been carried out on various reactor setups in micro-, milli- and liter-scale. It successfully models the induction times of nucleation as a function of supercooling at different cooling rates both in micro and macro scale. 3D modeling of this parameter to see the combined effects of temperature and in turn viscosity have also been successfully implemented on the milliliter scale results, as more of the bulk nucleation phenomenon was observed in the latter. Fisher Turnbull plot and the Gibbs Thompsons model were adjusted and applied to correlate the Gibbs free energy, involved with the rate of nucleation captured by the FBRM™ (Focused Beam Reflectance Measurement) technology. The scope of this measurement technology was also tested in liter scale. The results showed that FBRM technology is applicable when the solution is relatively dilute and does not have too many overlapping crystals.
This work demonstrates the design and implementation of a multi-band multi-standard WLAN system consisting of a 5 - 6 GHz receiver and a 24 GHz down-converter. The main challenges are high frequency, broadband, and adaptive operation, power consumption and high integration level. This thesis introduces a multi-standard adaptive receiver concept to fulfill those requirements. The receivers are implemented in a standard 0.13 µm CMOS technology. A direct-conversion architecture for the 5 - 6 GHz band and a heterodyne architecture for a multi-band system are proposed. The most common receiver architectures are analyzed and the wave propagation effects are discussed. Then the most important receiver parameters are derived. Active and passive integrated components are investigated because understanding the device characteristic is a key requirement for a successful high frequency design. Finally, the multi-standard adaptive receiver concept is introduced. The choice of architecture, design and implementation of each of the receiver building blocks are discussed. The functionality of the 5 - 6 GHz receiver and the 24 GHz down-converter is demonstrated by the performance measurements. The main achievements of this work include: Firstly, a 5-6 GHz LNA integrated in 0.13 µm CMOS technology. The amplifier exhibits a gain of 16.5 dB, noise figure of 2.9 dB and 1 dB input compression point of -6.5dBm at power consumption of 7.5mW. The circuit features robust built-in input ESD protection. Secondly, a 5-6 GHz zero-IF receiver with analog pre-processing features a noise figure of 3.8 dB at the conversion gain of 43.4 dB. The channel select filter corner frequency is tunable to 6.5, 10, 20 and 50 MHz. The implemented analog pre-processing loop allows to adopt the linearity of the receiver to the input signal level. Thirdly, a 23-24 GHz tuned down-converter achieved the gain of 21.8 dB, noise figure of 6.8 dB and 1 dB input compression point of -16.7dBm at power consumption of 58.5mW.
We describe the problem of re-balancing a number of units distributed over a geographic area. Each unit consists of a number of components. A value between 0 and 1 describes the current rating of each component. By a piecewise linear function this value is converted into a nominal status assessment. The lowest of the statuses determines the efficiency of a unit, and the highest status its cost. An unbalanced unit has a gap between these two. To re-balance the units, components can be transferred. The goal is to maximize the efficiency of all units. On a secondary level, the cost for the re-balancing should be minimal. We present a mixed-integer nonlinear programming formulation for this problem, which describes the potential movement of components as a multi-commodity flow. The piecewise linear functions needed to obtain the status values are reformulated using inequalities and binary variables. This results in a mixed-integer linear program, and numerical standard solvers are able to compute proven optimal solutions for instances with up to 100 units. We present numerical solutions for a set of test instances and a bi-criteria objective function, and discuss the trade-off between cost and efficiency.
The use of renewable energy sources, either off-grid or on-grid to supply electricity, has been done by developed countries since many years ago. Developing countries, for example Indonesia especially east part of Indonesia have recently started this way whereas renewable energy potential for example hydro, PV and wind are abundantly available. The lack of research and data is one of the obstacles to precede the use of renewable energy in this area, meanwhile this area has electricity shortages problem that occurred quite often.
Combined hydro, PV, wind, coal and diesel generators will solve electricity shortages problem in Palu (Indonesia). Integration of Hydro, PV and wind into PALAPAS utility grid will decrease levelized cost of energy from US$ 0.145 per kWh to US$ 0.133 per kWh. Sensitivity analysis against fluctuating fuel cost (from US$ 0.4 per litre to US$ 1.6 per litre) will increase levelized cost of energy before integrating renewable energy into the grid from US$ 0.145 per kWh to US$ 0.455 per kWh and will increase levelized cost of energy after integrating RE into the grid from US$ 0.133 per kWh to US$ 0.403 per kWh.
Repowering grid with integrating hydro, PV and wind will increase power quality especially by using configuration based on homer results. Buses voltage and buses frequency showed better result before, during and after some faults based on Homer simulation results. Voltage spectrum and sinusoidal waveform voltage are showing less distortion after integrating hydro, PV and wind into the grid even with no distortion based on Homer results.
