This dissertation is a compilation of four self-contained research articles that focus on selected subjects in the field of energy economics.
The first article focuses on the competitiveness of offshore wind in mature markets. In this work, we harmonise auction results based on the auction design features. We show that offshore wind power generation can be considered commercially competitive in mature markets without subsidy. Furthermore, once auction results are harmonised, we observe similar expected revenue streams of wind farms across countries. This finding means that different auction designs can fairly reflect the actual costs of developing wind farms and thus translate cost reductions into lower bids.
The second article explores the impacts of uncertainty in integrated electricity and gas system optimization models. We address the trade-off that the energy research community faces on a daily basis, i.e., whether to neglect uncertainty when constructing an energy system model and accept a suboptimal solution or to incorporate uncertainty and increase model complexity. Our research aims to bring a systematic understanding of which parametric uncertainties most substantially affect long-term planning decisions in energy system models.
In the third article, we focus on seasonal flexibility in the European natural gas market. We develop a market optimization model to simulate the operation of the gas market over a long period. This allows us to explore structural trends in market development, which are driven by changing supply and demand fundamentals. Our work contributes to the methodological question of how to measure the contributions of different flexibility options.
Finally, the fourth article investigates the value of Projects of Common Interest—gas infrastructure projects supported by EU public funds—in maintaining gas system resilience amid cold-winter demand spikes and supply shortages. For this purpose, we develop the first application of adaptive robust optimization to gas infrastructure expansion planning. The model endogenously identifies the unfortunate realizations of unknown parameters and suggests the optimal investments strategies to address them. We find that (i) robust solutions point to consistent preferences for specific infrastructure projects, (ii) the real-world construction efforts have been focused on the most promising projects, and (iii) most projects are unlikely to be realized without financial support.
The ongoing and unprecedented transformation of power systems leads to a reduction in the number of conventional power plants, which are the classical actuators of the grid. In addition, this development results in a decreasing system inertia, which is expected to yield faster frequency dynamics. Therefore power-electronics-interfaced units have to take over system control tasks and, in particular, frequency control. For this purpose, accurate and fast estimation algorithms for time-varying frequency signals are needed. Motivated by this fact, we propose a time-varying parameter estimator and a tuning criterion, which for sufficiently small initial estimation errors allows to reconstruct the time-varying frequency signal of a symmetric three-phase waveform in finite time. The proposed estimator is derived by using a time-varying version of the super twisting algorithm and its performance is illustrated via numerical examples.
Climate change, CO2 reduction, resource efficiency are only 3 current keywords that describe the current industrial-economic situation. In order to influence climate change effectively, the conversion of supply systems with technically usable forms of energy must succeed in the next decade. The international network founded in Baku in 2015 bundles research activities in the broad field of energy supply and energy efficiency. Discuss current research approaches and results with scientists and experts from renowned universities and follow Azerbaijan's efforts to implement the energy revolution.
The modern world is currently facing the energy revolution due to the decarbonisation challenges, promoted by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The well-established fossil fuel energy sources are being pushed from their leading market positions by renewable energy. European governments are some of the first to take decisive action towards decarbonisation and have already started reforming their economic sectors. New questions arising from such changes are influencing the role of Russia in supplying energy to the European market. The development of a market for renewable gas, especially renewable hydrogen in Europe, could potentially, in a long-term scenario up to 2050, be an option for Russia to help maintain demand and remain in the role as a main exporter.
The focus of this master thesis is put on the assessment of the current state of readiness of Russian and European energy systems for integration of Power-to-Gas (PtG) systems and for development of a carbon-free hydrogen market. German internal green hydrogen production capacity cannot meet the approximate demand in 2030 and 2050. However, the presence of the unutilised power capacity from Russian nuclear and hydro power plants opens a new opportunity to generate economically attractive hydrogen in large volumes via electrolysis with low electricity costs and zero carbon dioxide footprint.
In this thesis different supply chains for hydrogen export (Russia-Germany) are constructed and, as a result, the levelised costs of hydrogen (LCOH) are calculated and analysed. Hydrogen produced in Russia and transported to Germany via maritime shipment shows that it can already be competitive to the domestically produced green hydrogen in Germany. The main compartment of the LCOH is the electricity expenditure, which the current Russian industrial tariffs can reach up to 90% of the total costs. Further reductions of the electricity price for PtG systems are recommended in order to achieve lower results for the LCOH.
The outcome of this master thesis provides an overview on the current readiness of Russian and German hydrogen infrastructure and further recommendations on how it should be adapted. Finally a 2050 roadmap for the implementation of a hydrogen market in Russia and Germany is developed.
