Approaches to restore post-mining areas should provide sustainable solutions for recovering biodiversity and ecosystem services in regions experiencing massive deforestation. Key components that are impacted by surface mining activities and that restoration intervention should therefore target are biodiversity attributes and ecosystem service provisioning. The consequences of restoration decisions in post-mining areas in the Afrotropical region (here Ghana) remain understudied. To this end, l assessed levels of soil properties, biodiversity and ecosystem service in a post-mining area after two decades of active forest restoration by comparing them to attributes of the surrounding dominant land-use types. l hypothesized that (i) the interventions applied to restore and manage a post-mining area improve ecosystem attributes beyond conditions observed in the alternative dominant land-use types and even reaching levels comparable to reference forest (Chapter III), (ii) soil conditions and the functional structure of tree communities drive ecosystem functions and multifunctionality, with highest multifunctionality levels in the restored and natural forests (Chapter IV), (iii) the structure of tree communities coupled with pronounced climatic seasonality support a higher number of arthropods and arthropod functional groups particularly in the wet season and in structurally heterogeneous land-use types (Chapter V), and (iv) active forest restoration enhances the levels of ecosystem service provision similar to the reference forest with possible trade-offs or synergies among individual ecosystem services across forest types (Chapter VI). Chapter I provides an introduction to deforestation, and further highlights global and national initiatives, including active forest restoration, to reverse or minimize the impacts of tropical deforestation. Chapter II details the methodological approaches applied for sampling. Chapter III focussed on soil properties in addition to below and above-ground biomass of trees. The characteristic soil attributes for the restored forest were not significantly different from those in the reference forest, except for bulk density and base saturation, but differed significantly from attributes in all other land-use types. Chapter IV focussed on how the functional structure of tree communities affects the provision of ecosystem services. For functional composition, both the leaf economic spectrum and the seed mass dimensions separated different land-use types. Chapter V addresses the research question on how post-mining restoration affects arthropod communities. Communities of ground-active arthropods differed significantly between land-use types depending on the season. By quantifying the various ecosystem attributes in the field and transforming them into ecosystem service proxies, l could primarily identify synergies with no apparent trade-off between ecosystem services across the forest land-use types (Chapter VI).
Anthropogenic threat for the world’s environment and ecosystems and financial constraints necessitate a wise use of resources for the implementation of biodiversity conservation measures. A cost-effective planning and governance of biodiversity conservation has to be done to achieve maximal ecological outcomes with given financial resources. A better understanding of available modes of governance can help to improve the cost-effectiveness of biodiversity conservation planning and implementation.
This thesis investigates the influence of governance mode choice on the cost-effectiveness for biodiversity conservation measure implementation in selected conceptual and empirical settings, and identifies ecological, economic and climatic factors of influence. Linking the cost-effectiveness analysis for biodiversity conservation measures to the make-or-buy decision enables a novel perspective on cost-effective biodiversity conservation. In this context, conservation agencies are assumed to have two main options to implement biodiversity conservation measures in principle: (1) the buy alternative in which land is purchased for the purpose of biodiversity conservation measure implementation, and (2) the compensation alternative where a conservation agency compensates landowner’s opportunity costs to incentivise voluntary conservation measure implementation by landowners.
Two conceptual ecological-economic models were developed to analyse the cost-effective governance mode choice and their sensitivity to changing ecological, economic and climatic parameters. Two empirical case studies were conducted to address the question of cost-effective governance mode choice for a conservation project in Schleswig-Holstein (Germany) and a federal state wide comparison of conservation activities in California (USA).
It was found that the buy alternative is more cost-effective than the compensation alternative if conservation budgets and interest are high. In addition, not only the choice of governance mode is relevant with respect to cost-effectiveness, but also the mechanism to spatially select conservation sites chosen within a selected governance mode. Changing climate change speed – among other factors – influences the cost-effectiveness of governance modes and site selection strategies. The cost-effective governance mode choice also crucially depends on the intended timeframe of a conservation project. For shorter timeframes, compensating landowners is the cost-effective governance mode, however for longer durations the buy alternative becomes more cost-effective. This effect arises specifically due high one-off costs for buying land, which however amortize over time, compared to high recurring costs for compensating landowners. Based on these findings, the policy recommendations are provided which aim to improve the cost-effectiveness of governance modes available for biodiversity conservation.
Cameroon’s forest is one of the richest ecosystems in the Congo Basin and in Africa as a whole in terms of its biodiversity. These forest types are currently subjected to multiple categories of threats. By enacting a new forestry law in 1994, the government of Cameroon intended to intensify efforts toward the protection and conservation of this rich biodiversity. This study aimed to compare two forest management systems, a state management system (the case of Takamanda National Park) and a community-based management system (the case of Bimbia- Bonadikombo Community Forest), to determine which management system better conserves and protects the forest against biodiversity loss. The study applied a methodological framework that made use of selected indicators and criteria to evaluate the extent of sustainability of the two forest management systems and challenges faced in implementing them. Both quantitative and qualitative results were realized through the administration of questionnaires, semi-structure interview and in-depth contents analysis of Law No.94-1 of 20th January 1994 that lays down forestry, wildlife and fisheries regulations and the 1996 Environmental Management Law that directs Cameroon’s compliance to the international standard of protecting the environment.Results indicated that community-based system of forest management is a much more sustainable approach of forest management than a state management system. Based on the criterion of cultural values attributed to natural resources in the community-based management zone (Bimbia- Bonadikombo Community Forest), 78.2% of the local communities were more willing to protect biodiversity as opposed to 48.3% from state management zone (Takamanda National Park). This study found that the level of participation in the community-based management system was much more inclusive and transparent. On the other hand, in the state management system, a high level of corruption, lack of transparency, delayed and irregular salaries of forest guards and minimal participation of local communities in forest management decision-making was noted and likely responsible for the ineffectiveness and unsustainable management efforts in this system. The study recommends the adoption and implementation of a more inclusive, transparent and accountable management in the state managed system (Takamada national park), particularly the full involvement of respected Elites, Chiefs and Traditional Councils.
This thesis analyses the extent of host specialisation in ectomycorrhizas, a mutualistic symbiosis between hyphae of certain fungal species and roots of forest trees. In the mycological literature it has been debated for long time, whether ectomycorrhizal communities in mixed stands are dominated by generalist or host specific fungi. In this thesis the concept of specificity guilds is introduced and applied to the evaluation of host specificity among the ectomycorrhizal fungal at the study site Kahlenberg near Eberswalde-Finow, 100 km northeast of Berlin. The study site comprised two mixed stands of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris, L.) and beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) that were supplemented by one pure stand of Scots pine and one pure stand of beech. Ectomycorrhizal fungi were distinguished by morphotyping, anatomotyping and the molecular method of ITS rDNA sequencing directly at the mycorrhized root tips. Out of 40 fungal sequence types, 31 could be determined to species level by online data base comparisons and phylogenetic analysis. Among the 18 most frequent fungal species three specificity guilds were assigned: generalist guild, pine specific gild and beech specific gild. These assignments were based on the relative association with the roots of the two hosts in the mixed stands. In summarizing the occurrences in all four stands, the majority of fungal species, i.e. 67%, belonged to host specific guilds (five pine specific species, seven beech specific species), 33% were generalists (six species). Most fungi of the host specific guilds expressed preferences, i.e. in the mixed stands they also colonized non-target roots while these host preferring fungi were absent from the pure stand of the non-target host. This interesting behaviour may indicate improved competitiveness of host specific fungi when associated with their preferential hosts. Only four out of the 18 species associated exclusively with either pine or beech roots, i.e. they are specialists. The most notable beech specialist is Laccaria cf. laccata, although L. laccata s.l. is traditionally considered a generalist. Phylogenetic analysis suggests that the L. laccata complex consists of cryptic species that could belong to different host specific guilds. This demonstrates the importance of in depth delineation of fungal species by phylograms for assigning specificity guilds. The high percentage of host specific fungal species at the Kahlenberg site suggests that host specificity may play a role in role explaining ectomycorrhizal biodiversity in mixed stands. Different host species could provide niches for coexistence of ectomycorrhizal fungi. In pure stands high numbers of ectomycorrhizal fungi are more difficult to explain, because the number of possible niches decreases. Therefore, the pure beech stand was analyzed in depth, to test the hypothesis that roots of different individual beech genotypes may provide niches that explain the ectomycorrhizal biodiversity at the small spatial scale of a soil core. Fourteen ectomycorrhizal species, as determined by ITS sequencing and phylograms were patchily distributed along an 81 m long transect with ten transect points. All root segments in the three species richest soil cores (four, five and six fungal species) and the surrounding beech trees were genotyped by microsatellite PCR. In each of the three soil cores, roots of two host genotypes were present that corresponded to the two closest mature trees. However, different root genotypes did not carry different sets of ectomycorrhizal fungal species. Therefore, the hypothesis of tree genotypes contributing to ectomycorrhizal biodiversity has to be rejected for the analyzed beech stand. In the absence of other niche based explanations (soil parameters were homogenously distributed among transect points, no vertical compartmentalization), it is proposed that stochastic processes, such as spore dispersal might have contributed to the biodiversity in the analyzed soil cores of the pure beech stand.
Im Lebensraum Boden stellen Pilze einen bedeutenden Anteil der lebenden Biomasse dar und werden von einer Vielzahl von Organismen als Nahrungsressource genutzt. Ziel der vorliegenden Arbeit war die Untersuchung der Interaktionen zwischen der pilzfressenden Bodenarthropode Folsomia candida und verschiedenen Bodenpilzen. Einerseits wurde der Einfluss zahlreicher unterschiedlicher Eigenschaften von Pilzmyzelen, insbesonderer der Gehalt an giftigen Inhaltsstoffen und die Ausbildung von kristallinen Strukturen auf der Hyphenoberfläche und deren Funktion als Fraßschutz auf das Verhalten der Collembolen betrachtet. Andererseits wurde die Auswirkung des Fraßdrucks auf das Myzelwachstum und die intraspezifische Konkurrenz zwischen den Pilzen untersucht. In Laborexperimenten wurde das Fraßverhalten von F. candida gegenüber insgesamt 32 Pilzstämmen getestet, die entweder kristalline Oberflächenstrukturen oder giftige Inhaltsstoffe ausbilden oder als Referenzarten dienten. Zusätzlich wurden komplexe Gewächshausexperimente mit Quercus rubra durchgeführt, um u.a. den Einfluss der Collembolen auf die Mykorrhizierung unter natürlicheren Bedingungen zu untersuchen. F. candida unterschied deutlich zwischen einzelnen Pilzstämmen und fraß signifikant weniger an Myzelen mit Hyphenauflagerungen als an Referenzarten. Damit konnte erstmals den Hyphenauflagerungen eine ökofunktionelle Bedeutung als Fraßschutz zugeordnet werden. Dieser geht mit der besonders starken Ausbildung von Auflagerungen auf wichtigen Myzelstrukturen, wie Rhizomorphen mancher Pilzarten, einher. Noch stärker fraßhemmend wirkten giftige oder bitter bzw. scharf schmeckende Inhaltsstoffe, da insbesondere Pilze mit nachgewiesenem Gehalt an Muscarin, Amanitin und Fasciculol von den Collembolen am wenigsten gefressen wurden. Damit konnte die vermutete fraßhemmende Wirkung von Sekundärmetaboliten auf Bodenarthropoden bestätigt und erstmals mit konkreten Messungen des Giftgehaltes in Verbindung gebracht werden. Das Vorkommen von solchen Inhaltsstoffen und deren fraßhemmende Wirkung konnte so von den Fruchtkörpern auf die Myzele ausgeweitet werden. Eine ausgeprägte Fraßpräferenz für dunkel pigmentierten Pilzstämmen unabhängig ihrer taxonomischen Zugehörigkeit konnte ebenfalls bestätigt werden. Als weiterer Parameter wurde der Nährwert der Pilze durch die Analyse des Kohlenstoff-, Stickstoff- und Schwefelgehalts und durch die Anzahl der abgelegten Eier als Maß für die Fitness der Collembolen abgeschätzt und mit dem Fraßverhalten in Beziehung gebracht. Die untersuchten Elementgehalte korrelierten nicht mit der Fraßpräferenz. Die Ergebnisse der absoluten Gelegezahlen deuten auf einen Zusammenhang zwischen Nährwert und Fraßpräferenz hin, wobei die Hyphenauflagerungen und Giftgehalte wahrscheinlich von ausschlaggebender Bedeutung sind. Des Weiteren wurde erstmals nach Unterschieden in der Fraßpräferenz zwischen zahlreichen Ektomykorrhizapilzen und Nicht-Mykorrhizapilzen unter Berücksichtigung zahlreicher anderer Faktoren gesucht. Hier bestand im Gegensatz zu Endomykorrhizapilzen, deren geringe Attraktivität und Nahrungsqualität für Arthropoden als gesichert gilt, großer Forschungsbedarf. Es konnte kein Unterschied zwischen beiden Pilzgruppen in Bezug auf die Fraßpräferenz und Fertilität von F. candida festgestellt werden. Allerdings blieb der Einfluss von Symbiosepartnern oder unterschiedlichen Substraten unberücksichtigt. Collembolen haben einen meist negativen Einfluss auf das Myzelwachstum, der aber stark zwischen einzelnen Pilzarten variiert. Die Vermutung, dass Pilze durch die Ausbildung fraßhemmender Mechanismen einen Konkurrenzvorteil unter Fraßdruck erlangen, konnte nicht bestätigt werden. Vor allem schnell wachsende Pilzstämme wurden durch den Fraß gehemmt, was zur Angleichung der Wachstumsgeschwindigkeiten führte. Collembolen können daher die Konkurrenzverhältnisse zwischen einzelnen Pilzarten beeinflussen. Dies konnte auch in den Gewächshausexperimenten bestätigt werden. Nach Zugabe von Collembolen verringerte sich die Abundanz von Mykorrhizen eines bevorzugt gefressenen Pilzes zu Gunsten einer weniger bevorzugten Art. Die Collembolen hatten einen negativen Einfluss auf die Mykorrhizierung, die ihrerseits unter den Versuchsbedingungen einen insgesamt positiven Einfluss auf das Pflanzenwachstum hatte. Ein vermuteter indirekter Einfluss der Collembolen auf das Pflanzenwachstum und andere Bodenparameter muss in weiteren Experimenten unter komplexen Bedingungen untersucht werden. Die Arbeit zeigte, dass bei der Auswahl von Pilzarten für Experimente zahlreiche Eigenschaften der Pilze zu berücksichtigen sind, um aussagekräftige Ergebnisse zu erzielen.
The Banyang-Mbo Wildlife Sanctuary is a multiple-use lowland tropical rainforest in South West of Cameroon. This area was designated by the government of Cameroon with a focus of protecting 11 species including the most endangered primates in Central and West Africa, the Drill (Mandrillus leucophaeus) and Chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes). Local communities maintain user-rights of the forest and its natural resources as long as the conservation goals of the protected areas are not compromised. With many villages in and around the sanctuary and an ever-increasing population, most villagers rely on bushmeat to meet both dietary requirements and as a source of income. The purpose of the six-month study was to assess the current impact of hunting pressure on wildlife biodiversity loss with hope to recommend managed sustainable hunting system to the Ministry of Forestry and Wildlife. Carcasses of animals brought in daily by the eighty-four hunters who participated in the study were weighed, sexed and aged and socio-economic data collected by recording weapon type, use, price of each animal killed and its destination by 14 research assistants in 14 study villages. Hunters were interviewed in an attempt to understand hunters' perception of hunted game and their capacity to implement a managed hunting system. Study results indicated that 44 animal species were harvested with a total of 3,176 individual animals killed, giving an estimated total biomass of 22,397 kg in both the Banyang and Mbo areas. The Banyang ethnic group registered more harvest in terms of both off-take 1,888 animals and biomass 13,476 kg (13.5 tons) while the Mbo ethnic group extracted 1,288 animals with a biomass of 8,921.02 kg (9.00 tons) over the six-month study period. When placed into taxonomic groups, duikers constituting (34%), rodents (22%), other protected species (15%) and monkeys (11%) of the total animals extracted were most affected by hunting within the whole of BMWS. Larger-bodied animals like primates and duikers were most vulnerable to gun hunting while smaller carnivores and rodents were more vulnerable to wire snaring and trapping. Poisoned baits were used in some villages to trap Cane rats and Monkeys. Hunting peaks were attained during the raining season especially during the months of July and August. However, some small peaks occurred during the dry season especially in the months of November and January. More males (47%) were killed than females (43%) for all species over the six-month study period. Unknown sex constituted (10%) of the total extracted animals registered. Adults comprised (69%) of the total catch for all species registered, juveniles and infants constituted (23%) and (8%) respectively. Generally the Banyang ethnic group either consumed or sold locally (83%) of their total harvested bushmeat and sold only (11%) to outside traders. The Mbo ethnic group consumed or sold locally (47%) of the total bushmeat killed and sold (39%) to outside bushmeat dealers. Economic gains in terms of financial income from sale of bushmeat at the Banyang-Mbo Wildlife Sanctuary do not seem to be profitable as one hunter earned on average 22.629F CFA (US $47) per month over the study period compared to 125.000F CFA (US $258) earned by an average civil servant in Cameroon. One kilogramme of the most expensive bushmeat such as Pangolin (Manis gigantea) and Brush-tailed porcupine (Atherurus africanus) was on the average about 4.7 times less expensive than the price of one kg of domesticated animals such as fresh cow beef or goat meat. The Drill (Mandrillus leucophaeus) and the Chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) are at high risk of local extinction in this area. Meanwhile species like the Leopard (Panthera pardus), Buffalo (Syncerus nanus), the African Elephant (Loxodonta africana) and the Giant pangolin (Manis gigantea) were not recorded killed in any of the 14 study villages and are feared to be locally extinct. There was a steady decline in off-take and biomass of large-bodied species like duikers and primates in the total harvest of both ethnic groups over time during the study period. This suggests that hunting of larger-bodied animals may not be sustainable within the Banyang-Mbo Wildlife Sanctuary. The future of Blue duikers seems bleak if hunting continues unchecked. Poverty, population increase, unemployment and the weak enforcement of existing wildlife laws are the driving forces behind the unsustainable harvest of wildlife resources at the Banyang-Mbo wildlife Sanctuary.
In this research work, the causes and solutions to the loss of biodiversity in South Africa especially along river-banks is dealt with significantly. Attempts are made to point out issues tied to the prevailing water crisis and ecosystem fragmentation for scientists and policy-makers. Based on the empirical field work done the writer succinctly has come up with some recommendations on the issues per se. In sum, the recommendations suggest the best ways to deal with the alien invasive species which is nothing short of the integrative approach, nonetheless designed to function at its maximum and in conjunction with locally available materials, manpower, will and on the spot expertise. Also, the study depicts the rapid spread of Acacia species and Chromolaena odorata across the African continent could lead to an environmental catastrophy should appropriate measures not be taken henceforth. The findings also bring to light the necessity of co – ordination of all key players in this fight against alien invasive plant species and giving clues (suggestions or hints) on how concrete environmental policies can be designed in order to match with the objectives of ecologists and other concerned experts alike. Taking this route the study unfolds with compounding suggestions on what the African governments and experts (ecologists, conservationists, and hydrologists) on the field should inter alia do to avert this looming disaster.
