- In the last three decades, a lively traffic in theories of material culture has developed. A so-called "material turn" occurred, which crossed various disciplines such as anthropology, archaeology, cultural geography, or science and technology studies (STS). Accordingly, the question of what material culture actually is has occupied scholars in various fields of research and has given rise to a theoretical perspective known as ‘new materialism’. It promotes a new understanding of matter and invites critical questions about human relationships with nature and the environment through technology. This is accompanied by the search for a differentiation of binary thought structures, such as the divisions between mind and matter or nature and culture. The course offers an introduction to ‘New Materialism’ and its basic thesis, critically reflects on its methodological implications and explores different applications through a variety of practices. - In den letzten drei Jahrzehnten hat sich ein lebendiger Markt von Theorien der materiellen Kultur entwickelt. Die sogenannte „materielle Wende“ zeigte sich insbesondere in Disziplinen wie der Anthropologie, Archäologie, Kulturgeographie oder Wissenschafts- und Technologiestudien (STS). Dementsprechend hat die Frage, was materielle Kultur eigentlich ist, Wissenschaftler in verschiedenen Forschungsbereichen beschäftigt und eine theoretische Perspektive hervorgebracht, die als „Neuer Materialismus“ bekannt ist. Er fördert ein neues Verständnis von Materie und lädt ein zu kritischen Fragen über die Beziehungen des Menschen zur Natur und Umwelt durch Technologie. Damit einher geht die Suche nach einer Ausdifferenzierung binärer Denkstrukturen etwa der Trennungen zwischen Geist und Materie oder Natur und Kultur. Der Kurs bietet eine Einführung in den „Neuen Materialismus“ und seine Grundthese, reflektiert kritisch dessen methodologische Implikationen und erforscht verschiedene Anwendungen durch eine Vielzahl von Praktiken.
