The aim of this research is to analyse how and to what extent these three major trends in the banking industry influence the performance of the business models of European banks. The main research question is whether these trends improve or deteriorate the performance of banks' business models. The research question is divided into three sub-research questions, each focusing on one of the major trends and its impact on banks' business models. The methodology of this research is based on the cumulative approach, which consists of presenting a set of five papers that have been published in reputable journals in the field of banking and finance. Each paper focuses on a specific aspect of the research question. As trends in the banking industry are not a measurable variable, they are defined for the purpose of answering the research question as constructs that can be made measurable using the variable risk-weighted assets. Each of the used papers cover a separate problem for the banking industry. The first paper analyses regulatory changes in the wake of the COVID pandemic. The second paper covers the impact of the output floor on the performance of banks' business models. The third paper shows how ESG Ratings and additional capital requirements influence the performance of banks' business models. The fourth paper covers the impact of AI in modelling credit risks, and finally, the impact of the EU implementation of Basel IV used. The research results of each paper are used to measure the change in the RWA. In the second step, the change of RWA is used as the independent variable that changes the business model performance. The analysed trends significantly influence the performance of business models but depends on the respective trend and individual case. This research offers a novel viewpoint in the banking literature and a valuable source for both practitioners and academic research. As the banking sector undergoes constant transformation, the insights obtained here emphasise the importance of adeptly managing the interplay of these trends to optimise business model performance. Other researchers can leverage this work as a catalyst for further research into the dynamic interplay between prudential regulation, digitalisation, ESG considerations and bank business model performance. Additionally, the linear association detected between these constructs and bank business model performance as measured by RAROC creates possibilities for quantitative research. This research stimulates further scholarly inquiry on this topic by highlighting the significance of these trends in determining the banking sector's future.}, subject = {Bank business models; Prudential regulation; Digitalisation; ESG risks; AI; Bankenregulierung; Digitalisierung; ESG; Gesch{\"a}ftsmodelle; K{\"u}nstliche Intelligenz; Bank; Regulierung; Digitalisierung; K{\"u}nstliche Intelligenz; Environmental, Social and Governance}, language = {en} } @phdthesis{Sarachuk2024, author = {Sarachuk, Kirill}, title = {Broadband and firm-entries : a deeper look to Germany, Palestine and Lithuania ; different ways of infrastructure development and their effect on start-up formation}, doi = {10.26127/BTUOpen-6791}, url = {http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:kobv:co1-opus4-67911}, school = {BTU Cottbus - Senftenberg}, year = {2024}, abstract = {Recent changes in information and communication technologies (ICT) have considerably changed the lives of millions of people and the economy around the world. On the one hand, a better broadband infrastructure improved the life quality of households and simplified their everyday routines. On the other hand, companies have benefited from increased employees' productivity and the emergence of new business models that do not depend any more to a large extent on the location of the company. The latter circumstance was expected to be an additional motivating factor for small and medium-sized firms, as with the development of high-speed Internet, they could possibly successfully compete with market leaders; such goals, for example, were voiced in the Digital Agenda 2010 for Europe (European Commission, 2010). Nevertheless, the academic literature lacks evidence linking the improvements of ICTs with entrepreneurship (firm entries) and mostly reveals the state of the art for the developed countries, predominantly for the United States. This dissertation attempts, on the one hand, to cover the existing research gap for Germany as previous studies are based on outdated data from the DSL era, or refer to the firm productivity or economic performance. On the other hand, we try to investigate the experience of less developed countries and hence include two specific cases: one is Palestine (where the recent introduction of 3G connectivity boosted the business activity) and the second is Lithuania (an underperforming EU member with a complex historical background). The main conclusion from this dissertation is that broadband, as a rule, has a statistically positive relation to the number of firm entries, which stays in line with recent studies. Whether the effect of high-speed connections is amplified thanks to other externalities, such as the presence of a highly qualified workforce (skill complementarity) or entrepreneurial training, remains beyond the scope of this work due to statistical data imperfections and is expected to be researched by the author in the future.}, subject = {Broadband; Breitband; Entrepreneurship; Germany; Deutschland; Unternehmertum; Deutschland; Pal{\"a}stina; Litauen; Breitbandkommunikation; Unternehmensgr{\"u}ndung}, language = {en} } @phdthesis{Khan2022, author = {Khan, Naveed Ahmad}, title = {To win in the market place you must first win in the workplace : an empirical evidence from banking sector}, doi = {10.26127/BTUOpen-5743}, url = {http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:kobv:co1-opus4-57439}, school = {BTU Cottbus - Senftenberg}, year = {2022}, abstract = {The present study investigates the relationship between a leader's expectation, Leader-member exchange (LMX), training \& development (T\&D), organizational culture (OCL) and employee performance (EP) in the context of the banking sector of Pakistan. It also examines the relationship between leaders' expectations, LMX, T\&D, organizational culture and employee performance with the mediating effect of organizational commitment. Furthermore, this study examines the moderating role of gender between employee performance and organizational commitment. This study was motivated by the inconsistent findings in the literature on the leadership, in particular the Pygmalion effect (leaders' expectation) and leader-member-exchange on employee performance with the mediation of organizational commitment and moderation role of gender. These inconsistencies led to a new stream of research that indicates the importance of examining especially the effect of leader's expectation and leader-member-exchange on individual productivity with the mediation of organizational commitment. With this purpose in mind, this study considers these theories, the social exchange theory is the main one and Pygmalion mechanism and leader-member exchange are supportive theories of mapping and positioning the potential relationships between the variables within the conceptual framework. The data was collected through an online questionnaire. The questionnaire was distributed to 650 middle level bank employees in the top ten banks in three major cities of Pakistan, Lahore, Islamabad, and Karachi. Out of the 650 questionnaires, 350 were returned, of which 280 were deemed usable for actual data analysis using smart PLS-SEM. The direct relationship as well as the mediation of organizational commitment between the variables was analysed by using smart PLS-3 software. Findings showed that Leader's expectation, LMX, organizational culture and organizational commitment have a positive relationship with employee performance except T\&D. Furthermore, the results supported the moderating role of gender between organizational commitments and employee performance. The study identifies practical, methodological and theoretical implications and recommendations for future research.}, subject = {Leaders' expectation; Leader-member exchange; Organisational commitment; Employee perfromance; F{\"u}hrungskraft; Organisatorisches Engagement; Mitarbeiterleistung; Organisationskultur; LMX; Organisational culture; Pakistan; Bank; Organisationskultur; F{\"u}hrungskraft; Mitarbeiter; Leistungssteigerung}, language = {en} } @phdthesis{Makhlouf2023, author = {Makhlouf, Rasha Rushdy Mohamed}, title = {Cloud Computing : Entwicklung eines Kostensch{\"a}tzungsmodells f{\"u}r Kunden}, doi = {10.26127/BTUOpen-6284}, url = {http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:kobv:co1-opus4-62846}, school = {BTU Cottbus - Senftenberg}, year = {2023}, abstract = {Cloud computing is an essential part of the digital transformation journey. It offers many benefits to organisations, including the advantages of scalability and agility. Cloud customers see cloud computing as a moving train that every organisation needs to catch. This means that adoption decisions are made quickly in order to keep up with the new trend. Such quick decisions have led to many disappointments for cloud customers and have questioned the cost of the cloud. This is also because there is a lack of criteria or guidelines to help cloud customers get a complete picture of what is required of them before they go to the cloud. From another perspective, as new technologies force changes to the organizational structure and business processes, it is important to understand how cloud computing changes the IT and non-IT departments and how can this be translated into costs. Accordingly, this research uses the total cost of ownership approach and transaction cost theory to develop a customer-centric model to estimate the cost of cloud computing. The Research methodology used the Design Science Research approach. Expert interviews were used to develop the model. The model was then validated using four case studies. The model, named Sunny, identifies many costs that need to be estimated, which will help to make the cloud-based digital transformation journey less cloudy. The costs include Meta Services, Continuous Contract management, Monitoring and ITSM Adjustment. From an academic perspective, this research highlights the management efforts required for cloud computing and how misleading the rapid provision potential of the cloud resources can be. From a business perspective, proper estimation of these costs would help customers make informed decisions and vendors make realistic promises.}, subject = {Cloud computing; Total cost of ownership; Transaction costs; Cost estimation; Digital transformation; Cloud Computing; Gesamtbetriebskosten; Transaktionskosten; Kostensch{\"a}tzung; Digitalisierung; Cloud Computing; Kostensch{\"a}tzung}, language = {en} }
