Consequently, the intention of this paper is to assist municipal waste treatment facilities with the development of environmental management systems in which the continual improvement of environmental performance can be coupled with an increased economic efficiency and quality of delivered services. For this purpose, a manual that provides sample polices, programmes and approaches to the successful realisation of the ISO 14001 environmental management system was written. Due to more stringent requirements for the sound management of municipal solid waste, a growing number of Polish municipal waste treatment facilities have implemented or intend to implement the ISO 14001 system. By the end of 2005, 25\% of facilities were formally certified to the ISO 14001 EMS, 60\% of which have integrated it with the ISO 9001 QMS. The facilities, despite encountering a number of difficulties, for instance during the identification and assessment of significant environmental aspects, are also gaining numerous benefits, resulting in an improved environmental performance. Ipso facto, 37.5\% of municipal waste treatment facilities in Poland have admitted that the environmental-improvement potential of EMSs is higher than economic-human costs related to its introduction and operation. All the presented information, if other sources are not adequately referenced, are based upon the author's research, encompassing quantitative and qualitative study methods, conducted among municipal waste treatment facilities in Poland in years 2004 - 2006. Both land use and climate variations may lead to an advance of the desert, and human and natural factors can be connected in feedback relationships. This makes it difficult to describe cause-and-effect relationships, and to predict the impact of global warming. A key is understanding historic desertification, since the investigation of the past allows to better separate the roles of man and weather. These questions were investigated in the Decapolis region in northern Jordan, an area in the transition zone between the Arabian desert and the Mediterranean climate belt. It had been assumed that historic desertification in the Decapolis was connected with severe degradation of soils, and caused by agricultural mismanagement and deforestation. This idea served as explanation for economic decay and abandonment of cities, too. However, the greatest part of the erosion took place during the last Ice Age and the Younger Dryas. There is no indication that the inanimate landscape changed significantly since the Bronze Age. Historic field systems were partially preserved and seem reflected by distinct soil development, indicating that the impact of land use was more complex and less devastating than previously assumed. Historic human impacts on the natural environment seem limited, and certainly not connected with desertification. Romantic northern European misconceptions of how a "natural" landscape should look like may in this context have contributed to a negative assessment of traditional agriculture in the Mediterranean. Comparative analyses of soils and colluvia, air photos, historic travel reports, tree rings and climate reconstructions indicate that population growth was behind the flourishing of the Decapolis, which took place mostly under favourably stable climatic conditions. Periods of decline seem triggered by climatic anomalies. As it seems, climate change was previously understood too linearly: extreme rainfall events can be more devastating than drought, and temperature, wind and rainfall distribution over the year are important as well. Cool and dry periods at the end of the last Ice Age were connected with incision and sometimes dramatic erosion. Climatic fluctuations during history may have been connected with pests, famines, plagues, and wars which caused dramatic drops of population levels. The ecological sensitivity of the desert belt may have aggravated the impact of climate variations. Economic recovery took place only when population levels rose again. It is so far unknown how climate will develop under global warming, but an increasing number of anomalous events could have dramatic impacts. The key for dealing with global warming seems therefore adaptation to climatic irregularities.}, subject = {Jordanien ; Desertifikation; Desertifikation; Boden; Landnutzung; Klima; Arch{\"a}ologie; Desertification; Soil; Land use; Climate; Archaeology}, language = {en} } @misc{KurthBachmannHeineretal.2006, author = {Kurth, Winfried and Bachmann, Peter and Heiner, Monika and K{\"o}nig, Hartmut and Kraemer, Rolf and Lewerentz, Claus and Nolte, J{\"o}rg and Thalheim, Bernhard and Vierhaus, Heinrich Theodor and Braunm{\"u}hl, Burchard von and Wagner, Gerd}, title = {Jahresbericht 2003/2005 / Institut fuer Informatik, Informations- und Medientechnik}, organization = {Brandenburgische Technische Universit{\"a}t Cottbus / Institut f{\"u}r Informatik, Informations- und Medientechnik}, url = {http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:kobv:co1-opus-3488}, year = {2006}, abstract = {Selbstdarstellung des Instituts f{\"u}r Informatik, Informations- und Medientechnik der BTU Cottbus und Berichte der Lehrst{\"u}hle f{\"u}r die Jahre 2003, 2004 und 2005.}, subject = {Cottbus / Technische Universit{\"a}t; Bericht; Informatik; Informations- und Medientechnik; BTU Cottbus; Computer Science; Information Technology; Media Technology; BTU Cottbus}, language = {de} } @phdthesis{Schulze2007, author = {Schulze, Ingo}, title = {Unternehmensbewertungen unter besonderer Ber{\"u}cksichtigung der chinesischen Marktbedingungen - Kulturadjustierung des EVA-Modells}, url = {http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:kobv:co1-opus-3451}, school = {BTU Cottbus - Senftenberg}, year = {2007}, abstract = {Der sich entwickelnde Kapitalmarkt und die Kulturunterschiede werden bei der Unternehmensbewertung in China nicht ber{\"u}cksichtigt, was zu fehlerhaften Unternehmenswertbestimmungen f{\"u}hrt. Vielmehr wird das Substanzwertverfahren als Kompromiss angewendet, da kein kulturadjustiertes Unternehmensbewertungstool vorliegt, welches einen {\"o}konomischen Wert ermittelt. Kultur und landesspezifische Kapitalmarktstrukturen m{\"u}ssen als nicht kaufpreisentscheidend eingestuft werden. Die bisherige kulturelle Adjustierung erfolgte in der Post-Merger-Phase mittels der Cultural Due Diligence. Die M\&A-Transaktion ist zu diesem Zeitpunkt jedoch bereits abgeschlossen, und es wird nur noch versucht, die Probleme der Integration anhand von Kulturaspekten zu erkl{\"a}ren und eine kulturbeachtende Integrationsstrategie zu entwickeln. Relevant f{\"u}r den Cross-Border - M\&A-Prozess ist außerdem, dass die M\&A-Aktivit{\"a}ten in China nicht anhand der Zielunternehmung differenziert werden. Diese Verallgemeinerung hat zur Folge, dass bereits westlich ausgerichtete Unternehmungen ins Hintertreffen geraten, da Unternehmen mit starker Kulturabh{\"a}ngigkeit mit den gleichen Verfahren bewertet werden. Weder in Theorie noch Praxis wird eine Kulturadjustierung der Unternehmensbewertungstools beschrieben oder praktiziert. Mittels einer empirischen Untersuchung und der Kombination aus Vorstudie, Observation, Literaturrecherche und Fallstudien konnte diese wissenschaftliche L{\"u}cke geschlossen werden. Im ersten Schritt erfolgte eine Vor-Clusterung anhand des chinesischen Rechtssystems nach Unternehmensform, B{\"o}rsennotierung und Transaktionsvolumen, um die Komplexit{\"a}t des Problems zu beschr{\"a}nken und empirisch {\"u}berpr{\"u}fbar zu gestalten. Im zweiten Schritt konnte empirisch bewiesen werden, dass kulturelle Kaufpreistreiber und -dr{\"u}cker existieren, die in sechs Gruppen klassifiziert werden k{\"o}nnen. Zum einen handelt es sich hierbei in Variation um die f{\"u}nf Kulturdimensionen nach Hofstede und zum anderen um das chinaspezifische „Guanxi". Die Einf{\"u}hrung des M\&A-Kulturfaktors erm{\"o}glicht eine kulturadjustierte Unternehmensbewertung. Der dritte Schritt zeigte, dass Kulturunterschiede bei M\&A-Transaktionen zwischen den jeweiligen Clustern vorliegen. Daher ist die Beachtung der Unternehmensform, B{\"o}rsennotierung und Transaktionsvolumen entscheidend f{\"u}r den Erfolg eines M\&A-Gesch{\"a}fts. In einem vierten Schritt konnte eine Abh{\"a}ngigkeit der Kapitalmarktstruktur auf den Unternehmensbewertungsprozess nachgewiesen werden, wobei die Ber{\"u}cksichtigung {\"u}ber den Kapitalkostensatz erfolgt. Der letzte Schritt integrierte die Kulturrelevanz und die Kapitalmarktabh{\"a}ngigkeit in ein kulturadjustiertes Unternehmensbewertungskonzept.}, subject = {China; Unternehmensbewertung; Kultur; Unternehmensbewertung; China; EVA; M\&A; Kultur; Business appraisal; China; EVA; M\&A; Culture}, language = {de} }
