"If libraries can loan out books, why can’t they loan out citizen science projects?” Josep Perello The world is facing major challenges. Besides Covid-19 and vaccine scepticism we struggle with fake news, post-factual society, climate change, unsustainable food systems, and a multitude of other global problems. Citizen Science – the inclusion of citizens and communities in scientific research – can help mitigate some of these challenges. But it does not happen overnight. If we want to solve these problems, new roles, infrastructures, and partnerships will have to be emerge. And critically, science needs to move closer to society and into the daily life of citizens. The opening quote by Josep Perello (researcher and founder of the Social Citizen Science movement) highlight that public libraries can play a central role. Libraries can be a first point of contact for citizens. They can recruit and retain citizens, provide infrastructure, disseminate scientific information, host events and potentially manage communities and projects. Also, The UN SDG’s provide a strategic platform moving forward. Building on experiences from Denmark and the European research library community, this talk provides the Big Why for libraries as well as show examples for inspiration. Anne Kathrine Overgaard and Thomas Kaarsted run the SDU Citizen Science Knowledge Center which is placed in the university library. They have extended experience running Citizen Science projects and works internationally to do advocacy within the field.
