At the end of 2007, project financing of the module "E-Archiving" of the Consortium of Swiss Academic Libraries as a national cooperative project under the auspices of the Swiss University Conference comes to an end. Therefore, an overview is provided of achievements, of not-achieved aims and of possibly non-achievable issues. Within a brief presentation of results from the sub-projects on digitisation of journals, on local storage of commercially acquired content, on Open Access and on digital preservation the integration into the landscape of institutions and projects in Switzerland is to be exemplified. Special attention is to be paid to the needs and the role of academic libraries. They are predestinated for certain tasks with direct relation to the scientific process. Thus the sharing of tasks with suitable partners is a reasonable perspective. On a national level the aim is to cover existing and upcoming needs in digital preservation through those institutions, which are best qualified for the respective purpose.
The project's objective is to create a network of expertise in long-term storage of digital resources for Germany. As the perspective of current and future archive users is central to the project, the emphasis is put on long-term accessibility. Within the project the following offers will be created: a web-based information forum, a platform for information and communication, criteria for trusted digital repositories, recommendations for certification procedures of digital repositories, recommendations for collecting guidelines and selection criteria of digital resources to be archived, guidelines and policies, the concept for a permanent organisation form of the network of expertise in digital preservation. The long-term goal is a permanent distributed infrastructure for long-term preservation and long-term accessability of digital resources in Germany comparable e.g. to the Digital Preservation Coalition in the UK.
In several departments at the ETH Zurich digital measuring data (primary data) are collected and electronic evaluations (secondary data) generated. The ETH-Bibliothek also provides access to numerous electronic media such as electronic journals, data bases and e-books. The long-lasting availability of the information is traditionally secured by the Library. However, there is a lack of comprehensive preparation at the ETH Zurich as well as at the ETH Bibliothek for the long-term archiving of digital primary and secondary data. The project long-term archiving started in September 2006 in cooperation with the IT Services at the ETH Zurich, the ETH-Bibliothek and the Consortium of Swiss Academic Libraries. The goal is to test the feasibility of the long-term archiving of digital primary and secondary data and to carry out a pilot installation with relevant processes. This gives a base for further actions to be taken at the ETH Zurich. The transferability and use of the results for other Swiss universities are also to be considered. The project proceeds according to the OAIS-model (Reference Model for Open Archival Information Systems). The ISO Standard 14721 applies as a reference model to all types of digital archiving. The single modules of the OAIS-model are imbedded into the project organization and the structure plan. In addition, the experiences and competences of other national and international projects and initiatives should be according to the possibilities used and applied.
