In November 2010, a new library portal based on Primo by ExLibris was introduced at the Free University Berlin. Having been implemented as a beta version in a “soft launch”, it currently coexists with the Aleph catalogue and the MetaLib, but is intended to eventually replace these systems. The usability testing conducted by the authors is therefore meant to be the basis for improving the usability of the relaunch-version of the portal. In order to identify different kinds of usability problems, a combined approach was used. On the one hand, expert testing on the basis of a heuristic developed by the Chur Evaluation Laboratory (BibEval). On the other hand, 20 user tests, applying the “thinking aloud” method while letting the testers solve scenario based research tasks. In the paper, the question of methodology is discussed, before presenting the major findings and recommendations for improving the Library Portal | Primo´s usability.
