Libraries, which have long been part of a tradition
of sharing and exchanging, are now in
a position to take on a new function. With
its »Library of Things« the library of the Goethe-
Institut in Bratislava has taken the first
daring step in this direction.
Since April 2016, in addition to lending
German-language literature, music and games,
the library has begun to lend out 50 useful
things which fall into the categories of experiments,
outdoor activities, and workshops.
These include mainly items which an individual
does not need on a daily basis and often
does not own, whether it be sewing machines,
telescopes, electric drills, or over-sized toys
for children‘s birthday partie S. In order to facilitate
learning about the proper use of these
things, introductory workshops about the individual
items are also offered.
The goal of the workshops is to provide a
means for information, knowledge and skills
to be passed along among individuals in this
circle of users, and thus to promote a sense
of neighborliness and community. A central
idea within this project is also the aspect of
community building. The Goethe-Institut and
its library is thus transforming and modernizing
the social principle of exchanging and
sharing.
Parallel to these activities in Bratislava,
the Central State Library in the Amerika-Gedenk
Library in Berlin also lent common tools
and objects through its »Leih-Bar«, though
only for a limited trial period. Both libraries
have found it valuable to exchange information
about their experiences in this new area.
Right at the outset it became clear that this
service offered a way of addressing new user
group S. Both libraries also found that the media
were interested in reporting about these
projects.
Institute in Russland existieren seit
den geopolitischen Veränderungen
der 90er-Jahre. Sie haben die Aufgabe,
deutschlandbezogene Informationen
im flächenmäßig größten Land
der Welt den entsprechenden Zielgruppen
anzubieten und zu vermitteln.
Angesichts des digitalen Wandels
sind auch hier Umstrukturierungen
notwendig.
The Library of the Medical Association (BÄV) celebrates its 200th anniversary this year. Founded as the library of Hamburg’s first club for doctors, it is now run under the auspices of the German Medical Council of Hamburg (ÄKHH). The library supports the reading needs of Hamburg‘s doctors, its students, researchers, and other readers, and provides a wide range of services, while also preserving an extensive and unique collection on medical history.
The »Doctors‘ Association of Hamburg« was founded on January 2, 1816, as the third such association in the German Empire – after Lübeck (1809) and Berlin (1810). The goals of these clubs, which arose in numerous cities of Germany at the beginning of the 19th century, consisted of facilitating exchanges through lectures and reports on medical ca- ses, the provision of specialist literature th- rough a library, the support of professional re- lationships, and the pursuit of charitable endeavors. The library was planned around the needs of the club‘s members and guests, but was also intended to raise the prestige of the club within the city and within the medical world abroad. In the first decades, half of the members‘ dues was devoted to the acquisition of the latest books and journals as well as the purchase of significant works of medical history. Hence, the library was a costly undertaking, but it was also »one of, if not, in fact, the central source of the club‘s identity«.
In subsequent years the library collection continued to grow as constantly as the numbers of members. The so-called reading-room was also a meeting-place for the members, who often brought along guests from outside Hamburg, where they could join in informal discussions or play a game of chess.
