For the acquisition and management of electronic documents, the Saxon State Library – State and University Library Dresden (SLUB) developed the Saxon document and publication server Qucosa. During the implementation of the digital preservation solution, SLUB investigated pdf which is the prevailing data format for electronic publications. In this paper, first the pdf file format family is presented, then the problems which occurred when we were implementing a digital preservation workflow for pdf documents are described, and finally possible solutions to the problems are outlined. In the first part of the paper the pdf format family is presented and evaluated according to the criteria of a data format which can be digitally preserved. The problems with pdf-documents, tools for the validation of pdf-documents and validation results for a sample of the Qucosa text corpus are presented in the second part. In the third part organizational and technical approaches to solve the problems are described.
At the end of 2007, project financing of the module "E-Archiving" of the Consortium of Swiss Academic Libraries as a national cooperative project under the auspices of the Swiss University Conference comes to an end. Therefore, an overview is provided of achievements, of not-achieved aims and of possibly non-achievable issues. Within a brief presentation of results from the sub-projects on digitisation of journals, on local storage of commercially acquired content, on Open Access and on digital preservation the integration into the landscape of institutions and projects in Switzerland is to be exemplified. Special attention is to be paid to the needs and the role of academic libraries. They are predestinated for certain tasks with direct relation to the scientific process. Thus the sharing of tasks with suitable partners is a reasonable perspective. On a national level the aim is to cover existing and upcoming needs in digital preservation through those institutions, which are best qualified for the respective purpose.
