Summary of activities of Digital Preservation in both the Leibniz Information Centre for Economics and Goportis, the Consortium of the three German National Libraries. PDF Files from the Open Access DSpace Repository are in the focus of the presentation. We check their validity during the Ingest Process, using the Open Source Tool JHOVE, which was originally developed by the University of Harvard. 20% of the PDF files are rejected bei JHOVE, because they are either not valid, not well-formed or both. We ingest the objects all the same and migrate them to valid and wellformed PDF files version 1.5 afterwards, when they are in the Archival System. Therefore, a developer of the library has written a Plugin based on itext. Advantages and Desadvantages of this solution will be discussed during the presentation.
For the acquisition and management of electronic documents, the Saxon State Library – State and University Library Dresden (SLUB) developed the Saxon document and publication server Qucosa. During the implementation of the digital preservation solution, SLUB investigated pdf which is the prevailing data format for electronic publications. In this paper, first the pdf file format family is presented, then the problems which occurred when we were implementing a digital preservation workflow for pdf documents are described, and finally possible solutions to the problems are outlined. In the first part of the paper the pdf format family is presented and evaluated according to the criteria of a data format which can be digitally preserved. The problems with pdf-documents, tools for the validation of pdf-documents and validation results for a sample of the Qucosa text corpus are presented in the second part. In the third part organizational and technical approaches to solve the problems are described.
